This is a walkthrough of the royal burial areas and crypt of the Basilica of St. Denis in Paris, highlighting the tombs of St. Louis, Clovis I, Louis XIV, Louis XVI & Marie Antoinette and Catherine de Medici.
The Basilica of St. Denis is one of the great, if less well known, churches of Paris. Originally part of an abbey complex, the basilica was the burial site of St. Denis, the first bishop of Paris. It later became the burial site of many French rulers. The oldest monarch buried here is Clovis I, an early king of the Merovingian dynasty, and who is considered to have been the first true Catholic king in Europe. Architecturally the basilica is noteworthy as being one of the earliest Gothic churches.
Christianity arrived in Paris sometime around the early 3rd century. Denis, the city’s first bishop, was martyred by beheading. However, the city became much more open to Christianity following the arrival of the Franks in Gaul in the latter half of the 5th century. Clovis, the leader of the Franks, embraced Christianity, or more specifically Catholicism, the first major monarch in Europe to do so.
The mutual recognition of Clovis’ dynasty in France and the religious authority of the Papacy established the Church as the arbiter of Europe’s monarchs for the next thousand years. Clovis’ kingdom represented a return to normalcy in Western Europe for the first time in the better part of a century. Clovis was arguably the most important Christian ruler in Western Europe between Constantine and Charlemagne. After his death, he was buried in the Abbey of St. Genevieve in Paris. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the abbey was massively renovated, and Clovis’ remains were relocated here.
There has been a church on the site of the basilica since the 7th century. The current building largely dates from the early 12th century. After its reconstruction, virtually every monarch was buried there, and many of the earlier kings were reinterred there. During the French Revolution, all of the bodies were removed, dumped in a pit, and desecrated. Later, those parts that survived were reinterred in a common ossuary. Long neglected, the Basilica of St. Denis has been recently restored and is beginning to recapture the interest of pilgrims and tourists.
The Basilica of St. Denis was essentially completed in 1144. Many students of architecture consider this cathedral as one of the prototype Gothic churches that would be constructed throughout Western Europe in the later Middle Ages. Definitive exterior elements include the single bell tower on the right side of the façade and a massive, stained-glass rose windows over the transepts. The basilica’s main draw is the impressive number of stunning tombs and reliquaries which are scattered around and beneath the building. Although now mostly empty, these sepulchers once contained the bodies of nearly a hundred French monarchs and aristocrats. A flattering but unlikely effigy lies upon the sarcophagus of Clovis I. Among the other tombs here are those of Saints Denis and Louis IX; Louis XIV (the Sun King); Catherine de Medici and Marie Antoinette.

During the French revolution, most of the graves at Saint-Denis were dug up, the items inside the graves stolen and the bodies were thrown in a mass grave. It was during napoleon that most of the effigies were brought back into the basilica; so nothing is where they are supposed to be.

@@richardque1036 Yes. The barbarians dumped the bones in a mass grave and poured quicklime over them. When the Bourbon monarchy was restored what was left of them was dug up and returned to St Denis. But no one could tell what was left of who. They created a ossuary (a bone collection) and put all that was left in it. And there are marble slabs with their names listed. Apparently the French will keep your palaces but desecrate your grave, lovely.

@@04nbod It seems to me that Charles Martel's sarcophagus is one of the few not to have been ransacked during the Revolution, there is surely the body of Charles Martel in this sarcophagus. And also the bodies of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette were not thrown into the mass grave with all the other king of France which means that they could both be repatriated in their sarcophagi, there is also the heart of Louis XVII the son of Louis XVI who died around 10 years old which could be identified with a DNA test which is exposed as a relic in the basilica

Louis VIIs grave actually contains his remains as he had been buried elsewhere in the Middle Ages. Louis XVIII reinterred him in St Denis during the French Restoration. The archaeologists in recent years found quite a lot of new tombs including a princess (possibly Aregonde) during excavations in the Crypt of St Denis. Henry I, Philipe I and Louis XI were buried elsewhere and avoided the revolutionaries. Louis Philippe is buried in Dreux. Charles X was overthrown in 1830 and is still in Slovenia.

Like ThatBaileyLad explained just below, every tombs here have been emptied of the royals bones. All the relics has been buried in 2 large holes in the ground around the basilica after revolutionaries have stolen the metals of the tombs to melt "patriotic bullets"... The kings and queens remains all mixed together under the ground since. The 10 first "gisants" has been ordered by a king (I don't remember exactly whose one) to give the french kings from any dynasty before him the same prestige and equally importance. All the french royals afterwards would be buried there and used to order their own tomb during their living to be sure the body sculpture would correspond to their vow... and looking younger if possible. It's why we can't say for sure the sculptures faces are mirroring what they really used to looki alike. The St Danis basilica is the last resting place for Royals but also the exented family members and some loyal government members. The Louis the XIVth cell in the crypt is probably there as a symbol of the presence of the king's dried heart. But the box where the heart still today is in the closed part of the crypt. I guess the very simple tombs you can see here and there are the oldest ones. The ritual body embalming and religious calendar could take 40 days and all the guts was taken out of the body to avoid the flesh rottenness. As for the tomb, the royal family members would choose prior to their death where they would the gusts remains which was not necessarily the same place. Obviously Louis the XIVth decided to keep his heart close to his body. Also the praying Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette statue has been added by Louis XVIII after the Royalty restoration has a sign of peace after the Revolution events. I wonder if the basilica have some documentation in english for tourists at the entrance ? Usually the France's most visited places and churches have some flyers or booklets for non french-speaking people...

Falconer Omen Probably very hard to DNA test the bones that were gathered during the Bourbon Restoration, due to their age and potential contamination while thrown in pits during the Revolutionary Era. Unfortunately, when the pits were exhumed, very few of the remains were found to be intact, the rest were put in a container in the church. Which is a shame too, as monarchs going back to the Merovingans (Dynasty that ruled the Franks prior to the Carolingians). Tombs of kings of England, in Normandy, were also looted as well.
