I saw the Sainte Chapelle 56 years ago, and I still distinctly remember emerging from that narrow spiral staircase into the sublime radiance above. It was awe-inspiring, it was wondrous, it was -- well, unforgettable. Thank you, Manuel! You researched this building of marvels much more deeply than I did, and, with your help, I can now re-live and expand upon my impression of that day long ago.

I was a fifteen year old girl on a school trip from Cornwall, more interested in boys than architecture of any kind when we were taken to Sainte La Chapelle. I was stunned by its beauty, by the colours and the light everywhere I looked. I never believed that could ever be captured on film, but you have come as close to perfect as anyone ever could. Well done and thank you for the pleasure it gives me to watch it again and again.

So true. The first time I went, it was late afternoon--we were getting ready to leave and a docent told us to wait a few minutes. "Have a seat over there..." A few minutes later, the lights were turned off and the windows lit up. Before, I thought the building was amazing... I had no words when the lights were off. it was stunning.

Amazing to see the ancient stained glass looking so brilliant. It was removed and placed into safe storage during WW2, and its restoration was only completed in 2015. Photographing each wall in perfect lighting conditions was a triumph in itself.

What a silly comment. Every historian agrees that Jesus did exist. Hence the crucifixion of Jesus did happen, thus the true cross existed. You are not obliged to believe in the deity of the Christ. That is another matter. Now it is true that atheism has never led to building anything..Anything remotely as beautiful as the sainte Chapelle. Which is another reason to find your comment ridiculous if one has to pick his/her team.

@@mikewilson9266No. If it had masses you could still go in at certain times if you were afraid of experiencing a mass for some reason. (!) Or perhaps ppl could still wander around whilst a mass was in progress if you wanted, too. Like at Westminster Cathedral in London. So really and truly, this is an awful thing. This was BUILT FOR THE PURPOSE OF WORSHIP AND GLORY TO GOD. That was the INSPIRATION behind its creation. And all human gifts come from our Creator anyway, obviously. So ‘No’ !

@sylvaincroissant7650 12 дней назад
Where did you get this later date? To my knowledge the whole chapel (building, stain glass panels, but also the rosace) was built in a relatively short time spanning 7 years . By 1250 it was all finished and in the state we know it now and king Louis IX used it as it's personal chapel. There's been some restauration in the 19th century (and more recently for the stained glass) but that is obviously not what we are talking about.@@ManuelBravo
@ManuelBravo
@ManuelBravo 12 дней назад
@@sylvaincroissant7650 The Sainte Chapelle as a structure indeed originates from the 13th century, with construction completed in 1248. However, the rose window that you see today is a 15th-century addition. The original 13th-century rose window was replaced during restoration efforts in the later medieval period. The chapel had many renovations over the centuries, the spire for example, has been rebuilt five times.
