As a Volleyball player and now coach, the tech put into basketball shoes for the price outscale volleyball and are far more accessible to the general public. Pricing aside, kids will almost always prefer basketball shoes over volleyball shoes because of aesthetics and the name behind the brand.
personally, i used basketball shoes for volleyball because the cushioning was just leaps and bounds better. but volleyball shoes are super light and super stable. I also feel like the gum rubber on vball shoes were better from a traction standpoint; especially looking at consistency and reliability, it's a choice for playstyle.
I work at footlocker and just last week helped someone get a pair of PG5s because he was getting shin splints whenever he played. Your comment reminded me of that because of his complaints about volleyball shoes
Same, I wore Mizuno Wave Lightnings for awhile and ended up getting chronic knee pain (never had any significant knee injuries). I swore off volleyball/"court" shoes after that and now stick to basketball shoes
@@bzomeful Mizunos and Asics newest versions are good tho, Wave Momentum 2, Lightning Z6, Sky Elite FF or MetaRise are real good, both Companies really improved their tech BUT they are also just as pricey as these basketball premium signature shoes haha so you can really chose either one. I'm currently playing in Mizuno Wave Momentum 2 and I'm super happy with them, but I'm also looking for another pair that doesn't pick up as much dust on dirty courts, because on mondays we practice in a super disgustingly dusty gym (Karate/Taekwondo practice so there is textile particles everywhere) and I can't get any shoe to grip there, it's gotten to the point where I'm mopping the floor each time before we start practice. Our Middle Blockers use these React Hypersets btw and they say they are feeling really good with them.

Unfortunately, couldn't afford running shoes when I was younger. I ran track, played tennis, played tennis, soccer, football, and basketball, all in my basketball shoes. It only really sucked in track. Basketball shoes slow you down significantly in track since it's all about seconds. In football and soccer there just wasn't any grip so you can't cut as hard or you'd slip. It worked ok in tennis but ruined your footwork and the power you get on returns. So, yeah...sucked not having money for shoes.
With quite wide feet, I am actually strangely playing badminton often with the Yeezy QNTMs now. Because of the very wide base that gives me very good stability, and strong torsional support. We usually want very light, nimble shoes with very thin midsoles. But my joints disagree with that. So I have been trying out different basketball shoes for this reason. Thanks to Chris enlightening me with the tennis Nike shoes reviewed for outdoor basketball earlier. As badminton players move all directions, less spinning around, but diagonally, forwards, backwards, jumping up and down, lunging quickly, you really can’t go with shoes that are too tall. But my god the cushioning on usually badminton shoes are not friendly.
Interesting .. these volley and basket ball shoes should be similar .. movement are bit different but U've got jumping involved ... U dont get Asics or Mizuno shoes in B-ball ...
My son plays volleyball and he uses basketball ball shoes. He’s used KD 12 & 13, PG 2 & 5, and he’s currently using the Nike Adapt BB 2.0. Impact protection is huge for him.
Lots of volleyball players play in Kyries, KDs, Freaks, and Kobes. I’m a setter, so I really like a shoe with good court feel but still some stability and cushion because I’m also doing a little bit of jumping. Hitters I know mostly like cushion and stability and passers who basically only play in the back row and do little-to-no jumping love court feel.
As someone who does all three (passing/hitting/jumping) I'm really loving the kyrie 7s right now. Theyre low enough to the ground so I have the court feel for passing and setting, but it has enough cushion and ankle support to handle hitting and large impact jumps.

@@johnamparado6298 Yea they are called Nike Air Zoom Hyperattack, but they are already discontinued I think. Only really exotic sizes available online. Still have mine, but they are beaten down to a pulp lol, played Volleyball in them since 2015/2016, good times. I do think tho that these are more for low to the ground players as I had mad shin splints early on when I started playing in them, but maybe my technique and muscles to protect me from the impact were lacking back then, cuz later on it got better and the pain went away. Still didn't feel a lot of cushioning in them. So I hope you guys do not feel like missing out on them, there is a kinda similar shoe tho in the Nike Air Zoom Hyperace 2, which also has the Kobe silhouette IMO (not the 6ers, but if you look at them you know what I mean). They are also not that pricey at around 80-110€
Also, commenting on the movements of volleyball. Yes, stability is super important as ankle sprains are the most common injury, and passing needs that stability. But hitting/blocking (frontrow stuff) is super explosive and how you need to accelerate and then stop to jump straight up on a dime. Traction is basically life and death along with impact protection as front row people actually max jump more than basketball players.
I fell in love with this shoe right when I saw it in the thumbnail. Those Miami Vice colors for the sole are so nice on that all-black shoe, and the strap is dope too. Definitely want to pick these up.

Honestly, I use your reviews for consideration regarding vball shoe purchases and even recommended some shoes to my friends thanks to your channel. I have been using KD12 since this past summer things have been opening up and the impact protection is noticeable on my knees. It is still not going to make up a lack of leg strengthening for nonstop jumping but it helps enough. Great vid as always, Nightwing!
My favorite shoe while playing volleyball is the kyrie 7 because of both the court feel and the zoom turbo that feels so good and supportive to the jumps we have to make as volleyball athletes. Also the traction plays a big role and I'm very happy with the "bite" they have on the court
Great content as always. As a volleyball coach I still a lot of Kobes being used but the current shoe of choice on Nike sponsored teams are the Kyries. I just helped a niece pay resell on some Kobe ADs because she loved playing in those. As a young kid I played my volleyball in uptempos. Best for my super wide foot. Thanks for the great vid.
In the past, basketball shoes tended to be bulkier and heavier than volleyball shoes, which are still very light and stable, but lack cushioning. But nowadays, there are all sorts of basketball shoes that pretty much do everything better than traditional volleyball shoes plus more. Nike has done this sort of retooling in the past like with the Hyperattack which are very similar to the Kobe 6. Low top Kobes were popular in volleyball. It also depends on position, Middle blockers need more cushioning because they're big guys that are constantly jumping while Liberos, which rarely jump and specialize on defense, would probably prefer the traditional ultralight and stable volleyball shoe. The hyperset was used a lot during the last olympics, but so were all kinds of basketball shoes.
I play a lot of volleyball ( indoor leagues and tournaments, beach volleyball and grass volleyball). I’ve always worn basketball shoes because the tech is waaay better than volleyball specific shoes. Not to mention volleyball shoes are so corny looking! No style. I need a lot of impact protection because of my size and I jump high for my age, lol. My favorite shoes for indoor vball: Kobe 4,5,6, Jordan 34, kyrie 5 and Jordan Retros 11-13. My favorite grass volleyball shoes: Nike wild horse 6 and Nike Pegasus trail 2 and 3.
For Filipinos, their most fav shoe to play in as an all around court shoe is the Kyrie 2 and beyond, I think is because of the curvature of the sole, it makes it easy for quick change of pace and directions.
I always use your feedback on shoes to recommend shoes to all the kids I coach in my volleyball community! Have helped some kids find some really great shoes for the type of athlete they are.
I used vball specific shoes until moving to Japan where the sport is so much more prevalent but the shoes were so much LESS in cushioning... so I switched to playing in bball shoes. As mentioned, gum rubber is still the preferred outsole of choice for vball shoes. However, the brands Asics and Mizuno that are the brands that own the vball shoe market had the worst cushioning and don't offer much more other than stability and light weight offerings. Anyway, I started using the Adidas dame 2s years ago, and loved them so much that I bought 3 pairs. They offered the best in Bounce, traction, and stability.
Played competitive badminton as a kid in school but I used my school canvas shoes…which actually were technically “:badminton shoes” They were the Bata BM2000 (BM for badminton master)….basically a canvas upper with vulcanized midsoles and herringbone traction for days. They were super light and flexible, not a lot of cushioning but it’s also because you’re always on the balls of your feet, rarely on your heels.
Yup. I was telling a mom and daughter about both of these and the similarities. With that being said the model before these were sold out, so I found them a hyper dunk to play volleyball in. Also they grabbed a Kyrie 6 also.
Wow. Been watching for a while and this is my first comment. Dad of three so I need advice before buying shoes! Played volleyball at a high level 30 years ago! Lol. Luckily my boys are now interested so love this video and what a great (and respectful) analysis because that whole womens and mens blurred line existed 30 years ago and guess it still does. Can confirm this. Bought my brother in law the React Hyperdunks for his volleyball season and he rocked them as his game shoe. So, it doesn’t surprise me that they made this more volleyball focused. Reminds me of Kobe using soccer cleats as inspiration for the Kobes.
I switched from volleyball shoes, Mizunos and Asics to basketballs shoes around 6 years ago and never looked back. Lifelong volleyball player since a freshman in highschool, Uni Club, lots of adult tournaments/Nats and until my current late 30's I partially attribute still being able to play due to basketball shoes. That and limiting my reps (only play once or twice a week now instead of 3-5 when I was younger) and spending lots of time in the gym for PT and strengthening my leg muscles to help my knee injuries. While volleyball shoes are light and grippy they offered so little cushion I'm fairly certain they contributed to my multiple knee injuries over the course of my volleyball career. Patellar tendonitis was always an issue wearing those shoes. That said I don't jump as high as I used to and tend to play more defense and skill oriented positions nowadays, RS/Setter/Libero rather than Middle/OH, I still maintain I can sort of play middle though (the position I grew up playing) I started off with the Crazy Explosives (good shoes but a bit clunky) and then moved onto the PG3's and Kyrie 4's (both definitely did not have enough cushion for me but great traction and court feel) Lebron 16's (Best cushion but again a bit clunky) and now the KD12's which are my all time favorite shoe to ball in. For me the KD's have everything, Good/great cushion (most important for me) good/great grip, good support/lockdown/ankle protection and fit. I've got 2 pairs of the KD12's and sadly they're starting to wear down a bit, I've been trying to find the various colorways I like of the KD14's in stock but am having a hard time. Hopefully Nike restocks before they stop producing them for the upcoming KD15's.
as a volleyball player ive been using mainly bshoes bc nike tech overpasses mizuno and asics, hyperdunk 17, kobe 6, and KD 12-13 has been the way for me, they are very light, flexible and the grip is insane.
It’s probably branded as a women’s shoe because most volleyball stuff is marketed towards women. Men’s volleyball isn’t that big of a sport in the NCAA. ASICS and Mizuno dominated the US volleyball market. Nike and Under Armour have started to put in more effort for volleyball footwear
Volleyball shoes just aren't typically sold in stores so you can never test out the fit without buying them first. But basketball shoes evolved to become more like volleyball sneakers compared to the old hi tops like the penny hardaway re-releases, while also being position dependent so you can choose the ones best suited for how you move.

I used play in a couple of rec volleyball leagues, at first, I played in a pair of Nike Air Flite Lite mids, then I needed a new pair and I ordered what was supposed be another pair of Air Flite Lite's from Eastbay. What was sent to me turned out to be a shoe called the Nike Cradle Rock, some people remember them as the low tops that Steve Nash wore in the early to mid 2000's. In my opinion, that shoe was amazing for both basketball and volleyball! Too bad that they stopped making them years ago.....
Kobe 5/6 in Volleyball - light, mobility, traction, comfort. Indoor badmitton / Racquetball - same concept as well due to movements. So any tennis shoe/basketball/volleyball shoe would work in unison.

For grass I use trail shoes like Pegasus 3s Indoor I use kyrie low 4s, kyrie 7, kd13s and Kobe 4s. All the shoes have a combo of cushion and traction and stability
For me, I like the same thing for a volleyball and basketball shoe (cushion, traction, and containment- in that order). Currently using a LeBron 16 low that I got at an outlet which has been great for both. I've even used it for pickleball and tennis. Overall, basketball shoes are pretty universal since there is such a variety of movements.
Many Volleyball players are wearing Asics and Mizuno shoes. I personally think that Asics have a weird fit and Mizunos are extremely light(amazing) but rock solid cushioning. I personally play my Volleyball season in LeBron 16 lows and in the Jordan Why.not 0.1 low Chaos (recommendation from Josh ^^) Amazing traction, cushion and they look great.
As a badminton player myself. Back when I was in highschool I still played in school gyms for the tournaments but everyone wore badminton shoes. And still to this day I feel they still have the most consistent traction when compared to basketball shoes. Rarely any gimmicks and badminton shoes are mostly all gum bottoms so they stick great with minimal dust issues. Materials aren't great but the heel lockdown is always good, wife stable base due to badminton being about lateral diagonal movements. Typically bouncy and responsive cushion for quick explosive change of direction. Never cushy setups. I'm currently rocking babolat shadow tours but I also like the yonex 65z2 which is an all rounder shoe. I honestly think badminton shoes can accomplish 95% what basketball shoes can more consistently. The only thing I feel like basketball shoes are better at is lateral containment for hard stops coming off screens for example and materials
i played a lot of dodgeball and wore Kobe 9 EM Bright Mangos, light. great grip and enough cushion. another one of my favorite Go-tos were the Nike Hyperchase ASG colroway. super comfortable. in general any court sport i like low top basketball shoes
I use basketball shoes for volleyball as well because there are more options to find the fit and tech for how you play (hitters vs liberos might look for different shoes)
I use my hoop shoes for volleyball, pickleball, ball hockey.. pretty much everything that's done on a court. Mostly because I already have them, but really it's the impact protection, lateral stability, and traction that carries over to other sports. They are generally more bulky than what is necessary when you're not doing explosive lateral movements though, so it's usually a bit more comfortable to wear an actual volleyball/court shoe when you're not as worried about your ankles or jumping high.

I play indoor volleyball and something that is very important in a shoe is a stiff sole. Basketball shoes have these stiff soles, so those are what I use now. I used to wear running shoes but then I came down after a hit once and landed too heavy on the instead of my foot and severely sprained my big toe (grade 3 turf toe). I couldn't walk for a week and couldn't run or jump for 2 months. My toe wasn't 100% for like a year. Now I realize that a major feature of basketball shoes are the stiff soles so you can jump and land safely. Running shoes that you can bend in half with your hands are dangerous for volleyball or basketball. Anyways, that's what I look for in a volleyball shoe now.
The main reason I use basketball shoes for volleyball is that that they contain my foot better for latter movements. as a middle blocker you have to be quick to the sides and then if you're sliding inside the shoe because it's not stiff enough you'll end up being even more late. But also they look way better, and more tooling for the money. I always go for the kind of shoe that isn't too high of the ground, as i feel that makes me less responsive and more unstable. So the previous hyperdunks, the Kyrie's are good and the puma Clyde all Pro I've tried and liked for volleyball
My fav basketball shoe is the curry 2. I love the traction and while it’s not the best looking shoe on the court it can still compete with the Kobe 9, Kyrie 2, and all of those other high performance traction models that Nike and Adidas offer
The Hyperdunk 2017 low is literally my go-to for volleyball. I prefer less cushion when playing VB. Also, I find the 2017 Hyperdunk surprisingly stable. Heel lockdown is great too. I tried to transition into the Hyperdunk X for VB, but the heel lockdown was lacking. So, Hyperdunk X stayed as a Hoop shoe.
I play once a week in a pair Zoom Freak 2’s love the cushioning and stability. Used Acics and Mizuno court style shoes but the soles always wore out way too fast. Very interested in trying the Trae Young 1’s due to how light they appear to be.
I saw Korean National Volleyball Players was ware CURRY 8 on court and they love that and Play well with those shoes. For myself I use to ware MIZUNO Volleyball shoes for play basketball and there are nice too.
I always use basketball shoes for volleyball. Most volleyball shoes, especially Adidas will have good cushion in the heel, like boost, but be dead in the forefoot. Definitely want support and court feel, but feel it's easier to get that with impact protection in basketball shoes. Curry's and PGs are great for it
To be honest stabie basketball shoes work perfectly for all indoor sports - I wear them playing badminton on a high recreational level and stable, low to the ground basketball builds (pretty much anything other than Lebrons) work well. Those Hyperdunk low 2017 - on which the shoe in this video is based, Puma Clyde All-pro, KD13, Kyrie 4, Harden vol. 3 were all great for badminton.

As a volleyball player and coach in France (so from an other market). More then half of the volleyball players play in basketball shoes I played and I’m still playing both sports. I’m 40, and definitely : Grip, cushioning and lateral support are very important. So basketball shoes are perfect for Volleyball, and you already talk about the tennis shoes. So I feel the same about the name court shoes
Oh, by the way I’m also a sports teacher, And I recommand low top basketball shoes as an all around option to everyone because of the grip and lateral stability
I have these shoes and I have been wearing them for around two club seasons. I like them but they definitely have lots of cons. The laces are very ripped and the back and side sometimes dig into my ankle which can be annoying and painful. The top of the strap has rubbed off a lot but it keeps my shoe laces tied all them tome. Even after all I’ve put them through the traction is still awesome. I want to get new shoes but I’m unsure what to get.
I prefer Basketball shoes for volleyball because the cushioning is just way better. My favorite by far was the hyoerdunk 2016, waiting on the gt jump to see what that's like.
Most volleyball branded shoes are light and stable, but the traction on most vb shoes stuck. I need a PG cushion set up with the Kobe 9 grip. I play in the PG5.
A lot of kids around my area have been watching Haikyuu!! on Netflix and really getting into volleyball...but kids wanna look cool while doing it 😜 Also volleyball players have to rotate positions on the court so they'll all be leaping or diving or making those lunging lateral movements...very high torque. Just less linear running. Anyway let's go Flightless Crows!
playing volleyball in basketballshoes for years. Mostly because of the cushioning which is way better then in most of the volleyballshoes. Also i snapped my ankles 6 times in volleyball shoes, that never happend again with basketballshoes. And the third important point is, that there are way more cool looking shoes for basketball than there are for volleyball. Atm i play in KD 14 and before i played one season in Jordan 34 low.
I have these and are in my top 3 just below kobe 9’s for me they just won 2nd place beating harden 3’s I just wish these were more popular so it would be easier to find for a better price They do feel snug just as hypedrunks 17 But trust me, traction is op and cushion/stability is great ! You wont regret guving these a chance
I use basketball shoes for volleyball. Cushion and support is a lot better. General movements are still the same. Lateral n forward movement and jumping for cushion are a lot better on basketball.
Now days, with the wave momentum, sky elite lines and my personal fave, Metarise, volleyball shoes are really good. Right now using j36 in my rotation which feel nice (that zoom stroble👌), but i prefer more response in my forefoot when im jumping. Metarise are just made for jumping with two feet take-off with the curved heel. but need to be more readily available (had to get mine from ebay).
Great vid as always!!! =) Another serious volleyball player here who also plays basketball occasionally - and I'm a wide-footer =D Used to wear Mizunos since 2000s started with Lightning series, then later upgraded to Tornados (last was Tornado X) before started wearing basketball shoes around 2013/2014 - mainly because of: (i) the high price tags (ii) not wide-footer friendly as of late (iii) not many options for mid-cut Like volleyball shoes, I have tried a lot of basketball shoes. According to brands, these are the ones that I really enjoyed playing with: Adidas: N3Xt L3V3L and Pro Bounce Nike: Air Zoom BB NXT, Zoom Rize 2 and Alphadunk UA: HOVR Havoc 3 The high-end ones (like Jordans, LeBrons, etc.) felt too unstable and kind of wobbly for me, especially when I jumped-reversed-sprinted forward-moved left/right repeatedly. It may be because of the extra layers of cushioning around and below the foot, but that's just me though. Hopefully others don't feel that way =)
A couple of years ago I saw the hyperdunk 2011 low, but it was rebranded as a volleyball shoe. The only thing that was different was the label on the box.
I play volleyball in basketball shoes as well in volleyball shoes, I use pg4, kd14, kd12, zoom rise, adidas crazyflight, and I'm looking forward the GT Jump. You should make a review of asics volleyball shoes, specifically asics sky elite and give your thoughts.

Hopeful to be release here in Manila and to test it out for basketball pick up games, indoor. My son and I have no issue with low tops. My whole life playing semi pro basketball leagues, I used to rock low tops like CP3s, Pro Model lows, Jordan 12 and 13 lows, I hadn't encountered any issues. I wish my son and I can cop this one here in Manila.
What is up with shoe prices right now? I’m size 10 and everything seems way expensive. Nike GT Cut are $300+, Puma Clyde All-Pro and KD13 are $200+. Insane
personally ive stuck to dame all of my volleyball time. I used Dame 3 which were very comfortable and now i use Dame 7 which a slightly heavy for me but still with enought support and cussion for landing.
I love my mizuno volleyball shoes for volleyball mainly because of the support when landing. But I was starting to find grip (unless covered in gum rubber) was an issue so I have been looking for a basketball shoe that can provide the same level of impact protection and support and grip that can compete with gum rubber . Best overall basketball shoe for me so far in volleyball has been the Curry 3. Best impact protection for me has been marquee boost mid.
Right now, the tech in basketball shoes is far better than volleyball shoes. And for roughly the same price point, it's an easy choice to lean towards ball shoes. Additionally, there are a ton of phenomenal budget ball shoes out there with better tech than "higher end" vball shoes. Traction holds up better and bites harder, cushioning setups are more reactive, and the presence of lateral containment and outriggers in ball shoes are an absolute godsend. Volleyball shoes have these.. just not to the same degree of performance. Traction in volleyball shoes will typically last you only about 4 months before being absolutely torn to shreds (provided you're playing consistently and frequently). If you're a weekend warrior, expect up to a year in vball shoes.
Its easy to understand on e you see volleyball shoes. For the past 10+ years basketball shoes have been just better all around to play volleyball in than volleyball shoes. Mainly because of better support lockdown much better traction and better cushioning setups. Only as of late have volleyball shoes been competitive to Where they actually perform similarly and could realistically be preferred over basketball shoes. I still play in my Harden 3s and my Harden 4s just got a Dame 6 ( Mad cheap) I think most of the players still choose basketball shoes to play in…
I was a ball player all throughout highshool... then I got into running... and triathlons......I still prefer to run in Basketball shoes, cuz of my weak ankle from sprain in basketball..... The ankle support from ball shoes is greaT!!!
I got to see my nephew play at one of his college tournaments for the 1st time and footwear options for volleyball 🏐 had never crossed my mind until then. With that being said I spent half of the 1st two games looking at the players feet. When he got a break he got to come over and I asked him for his shoe lol he laughed and gave it to me. He plays in the Harden 5 and I think you disliked that shoe. Thing was super tough in hand. I'll be recommending these to him though just because I'm a fan of the react foam and he has terrible knees. ✌🏾😎 thanks as always
I think half of the players in my club wear basketball shoes, lots of kyries, Kobe’s, lebrons, and kds. Me personally, I use the Kd 14, their cushioning and impact protection is unmatched compared to volleyball shoes
I'm primarily a basketball player, but I play volleyball here and there when I can find a non-elitist open gym lol. Basketball shoes tend to be more cushioned than volleyball shoes. Being a bigger guy, I need that. My favorites when I do play volleyball are any Kobe flagship models or my pair of 2016 "United We Rise" Hyperdunks
