Basketball Shooting Form and Techniques: Do NOT Square Up!!!
shotmechanics.c... (Free Workout)
Many players and coaches make a huge mistake when they square up to the basket. Generally this makes it really hard for players to keep their correct basketball shooting form and technique. So try tilting your feet to see if you can get a smooth and repeatable shot that's comfortable to you!
So today I wanted to walk you though this new fundamental and give you some shooting drills to help you master tilting your feet!
Ever wonder how NBA players like Stephen Curry, James Harden, Damian Lillard, and Kyrie Irving have such smooth and effortless shooting form? Well turning their feet is a crucial first step!

Now before you all lose your minds let me clarify a little... "Squaring up" will work well for some players but VERY FEW. If that works for you no biggie keep rolling with it. Try out different options and see what's best for you. Don't just bee a sheep and do something becuase someone told you to. Think for yourself and make an informed decision. Not everybody is going to have the exact same mechanics!

and to add to that point, if u do square up a leg drift can help relieve stress to your shoulder. i use to not square my feet but that gave my shot a hitch so i started squaring up but it took longer to get it off so i started using my legs to turn my body. it all comes down to personal preference and learning what works for you. great video by the way keep up the good work.

I realized that what he's saying can be pretty accurate because I shoot both ways but I notice I make more shots with the tilt then squared up. Squared up looks much more proper especially on the spot up shots but the tilt is BETTER EVERYONE. Reason why is cuz from the tilt kinda foot positioning he's speaking of you can drive to the basket or crossover better. To each his own tho but the tilt definitely helps out your game
@FoxyChariot
@FoxyChariot 6 лет назад
Right. I shoot better with the tilt
@ShinyBlackRims
@ShinyBlackRims 7 месяцев назад
most pros use the tilt. I notice that now. It is a better bio-mechanical position for shooting because it keeps the upper and lower arm more aligned and straight. Squaring up actually causes the elbow to point out, instead of forward.

How do you keep your shot form consistent ? How do you get the same shot every single time?
@atlaspils7770
@atlaspils7770 7 лет назад
Muscle memory. Just practice the same shooting motion whenever you can. Even if there is no basketball, just keep doing the same motion. After enough practice you'll do it without thinking just because your brain knows how to do it from memory

I'm no expert, but I would suggest doing drills and only focusing on one of the keys for your jumpshot. So you want to focus on getting one thing correct every single time and once you got that down you can move on to the next.

@whothatswho7756

The reason you put your feet on a bias is simple, you create alignment from your foot, to your knee, to your hip, to your shoulder, to your elbow to your wrist. If everything is in line consistently, then it is just putting the ball on the basket. If you square to the basket, you are always going to have your knee, hip and shoulder out of alignment, which can lead to inconsistent linear paths. That can then get overcompensated for with elbow flares, wrist finishes in front of the head. At the end of the day you want an efficient repeatable process that doesn't require a massive amount of brain power. Alignment = More buckets. One other thing I would note as being a problem with youth is they tend to not understand right-eye and left-eye dominance concepts. So they finish in front of their head to put "their hand in the basket". This creates alignment issues because the go from "shoulder to nose". You will typical see a lot of shots going right or left of the basket. You have to remind them to keep their hands to the same side that they are shooting. The old, aim using your thumb two eyes open, one eye open technique fixes that real quick.

Awesome and easy to understand explanation as always Coach, kudos to you! May you please post someday a video about how to properly hold the basketball with the shooting hand, prior to shoot, avoiding the ball to slip away or to go deviated? I've been working on tilting my feet when shooting, but even if I try to stick my shooting elbow to my torso to avoid left-right misses, sometimes the ball slips off my hand at jumping

I square up my hips with the center of the rim when I shoot (not my feet) and this works very very well for me. When my hips are squared with the rim at the peak of my shot I almost never miss left or right, meaning the only variable I have to dial in is shot strength. This is what I have found works best for me after taking hundreds of thousands (if not in the millions) of deep jumpers over the past 15 years.

There’s a big caveat to this. If a shooter is turning their feet AND frequently missing short or missing in the same direction the toes are pointing (or rebounds of misses predominantly go the same way) they absolutely need to straighten out their stance some.

I completely agree that you want your hip and arm aligned in a straight line when shooting but when you hear coaches saying to "square up," they're referring to facing the basket with shoulders square, feet and hips turning toward basket also known as facing up. I find the title of this to be problematic for kids because those that trust your teaching will only remember "Don't square up" when their coach is trying to get them going in the right direction by telling them to catch, pivot and square up or catch square on the hop.
