India and Pakistan’s long-simmering rivalry has spilled over into a trademark dispute over basmati rice. India has applied for protected geographical indication (PGI) status from the European Commission that would grant it sole ownership of the basmati title in the union. Pakistan immediately opposed the trademark application, which could jeopardise its growing rice exports to Europe. The two countries are tasked with negotiating a resolution by September, before the EU decides on the designation. Pakistan could appeal to the European courts, but the long review process could leave its rice industry in limbo.

The translator may have been liberal with their translation, but if I had to guess, Id say they get bored and insert idioms for personal entertainment. @Psych Out The thing is that the EU controls its own market. They decide what the rules are. You can't sue the EU or India. Champagne can only be sold as Champagne in the EU if it's made in France, everything else is just sparkling wine. The origination of a word does not signify whether it is one countries produce or not, and Pakistan has already gained the GI liscence on the Basmati rice. To end Pakistan's basmati rice is so much far superior in comparison to India that they had the Pakistani Basmati rice smuggled to India and rebranded....

Not my type of rice, although a friend who was born into an Indian family claims it's the best tasting rice in the world ;-). The fun thing is that our Pakistani friend also likes to bring her Basmati rice dish to potlucks. This should be a none issue. No country owns exclusive right to a certain variety of food. If Indian wants to trademark it, uses the places where the rice grows from, like Punjab or West Bengal etc.

Yeah it's like....why though...Just make separate trademark without bringing other country price or value stuff go down just for being similar. Trademark as 'Specially grown at' and that's it. Done.

This is unfair! Basmati should not be trademarked as it originated and is a staple in multiple South Asian countries. They were one country several times in history. I'm British with Bangladeshi heritage. I used to eat Tilda Indian Basmati rice growing up, but I prefer Laila Pakistani Sella Basmati rice now. I'm glad the UK is out of the EU so we don't have to deal with their ridiculous regulations.

The reason for its large production in India was due to the expanding population and international export was also another one of their main targets. The origination of a word does not signify whether it is one country produce or not, and Pakistan has already gained the GI license on the Basmati rice. To end Pakistan's basmati rice is so much more superior in comparison to India that they had the Pakistani Basmati rice smuggled to India and rebranded....

Ohhh please. We have more then 29 varieties of basmati and more then 700 well established basmati brands. It depends on what you buy. You want a cheap brand of inferior quality basmati? Its available. You want a top shelf basmati with superior quality its available. I dont think you can even compete with the product diversification of Indian basmati rice. Indian top shelf basmati rice can beat pakistani top shelf basmati any day. Our agricultural industries are far more superior than yours.
