Just wanted to say that I really appreciate your great work! I spent six months in Spain and also traveled to the Basque Country. Needless to say, the language and culture enchanted me at the first moment I stepped into this territory. I even wrote my master thesis about it. Unfortunately, it seems almost impossible to learn the language, no matter how interested you are in languages. However, I truly enjoy watching these videos and sincerely hope to at least grasp some things from them. Your explanations are definitely great! Keep up the fantastic work of sharing this wonderful and intriguing language!

Wow, un canal que enseña vasco.Nunca oense que RU-vid me recomendaría un canal asi pero a hira que me estan dando gamas de apre der idiomas creo que es un buen momento para aprender vasco (I will have to re-study again the english grammar understand the aarts i do not understand or forgot. Hope this chanel grow during the time and more people get more interested to learn basque )

This was really useful because Russian uses these types of constructs but in Russian the genitive case is merged with the partitive case so I couldn't understand why they were using the genitive when they were negating nouns.

Oh man that does sound confusing. Russian cases really got me, but to be fair I didn’t understand much about cases back then 😅

I'm in the process of converting of Russian into an ergative language. If you want, I could show you my work. Standard Russian is bad, not as bad as English, but the underlying logic is pretty good. The main issues with grammatical cases of Russian is that they multiple plurality x case (genitive, locative, dative, etc.) so that's confusing. Also, the cases in Russian are merged so the Russian genitive case is used for genitive (possessive), partitive and ablative. The Russian dative case is used for both dative and allative. @@basqueberserk

Great to see new videos again! I'd take the partitive as different from the absolutive for teaching purposes although I wouldn't hide their relation. In The History of Basque (p. 93) Trask doesn't even qualify the partitive as full case and explains that "[a noun phrase bearing the partitive] occurs only in contexts in which the absolutive would otherwise be used." So given this, I'd say the partitive is a variation of the absolutive for certain situations.

Tbh I've never stopped to think about whether it's its own case or not, I just try to focus on learning its various uses bit by bit. My mistakes tend to follow similar ones I made/make in French so that helps too.

I take the case of partitive is a separate case. ( Heated discussions of grammar scholars are not my business ;-). Why? Its very special, neither singular nor plural, its a mugagabe form (undefined). Eskerrik asko I find super interesting. Because it defines a plural (asko) of anything. Not a question or negation. Any more examples of this old kind? Super video, many examples, looking into many different uses of -(r)ik. With every new ending Euskara shows its neverending beauty. Egia da..

About other examples like "eskerrik asko", de Rijk's book (referenced in the description) mentions several examples in Mitxelena's writings, such as: - "gauza jakingarririk aski" (plenty of interesting things), - "lanik aski" (plenty of work), - "lore ederrik asko" (many beautiful flowers), - "horrelakorik gutxi" (few such things). De Rijk's says (p. 290): "The disappearance [of forms like "eskerrik asko"], however, is quite recent, since Mitxelena’s writings still contain quite a few examples, all used in positive contexts."

@@gauge21 thanks a lot! Just ordered de Rijk´s book as a Christmas present to myself. Your examples are enlightening. I like aski. Good to know this is around. I am a German native speaker. lanik aski - viel (von der) Arbeit. wenig (vom (=von dem)) Kuchen corresponds to the Basque construction and uses the Dativ. The short form is usually written, the longer (in brackets) form is usually spoken. Gabon! Euskalduna zara?

@@ernstkrudl4895 You won't regret getting that book! Worth every penny. Would "vielen Dank" conform to that construction as well? I'm not euskalduna, but I'm learning Basque!

@@gauge21 I was thinking about vielen Dank before. Dank has no plural form. And viel Dank would be wrong. Maybe its short for Ich gebe Ihnen viel(en) Dank. So where does the -en in vielen come from? Its a masculin/neuter singular socalled weak ending from older German. It´s such a common phrase, nobody would easily think about it. Anyway viel (much/many) is a partitive aspekt without doubt. (Sometimes I write about German aspects, because our Basque lady knows German, and she might find it interesting).
