Painter Jean-Michel Basquiat upended the the art world during his vivid, experimental, and tragically brief career and life. His artistic reputation and global influence have only grown since his death, including record-breaking auction prices for some of his paintings. Basquiat’s sisters, Jeanine Heriveaux and Lisane Basquiat, discuss his life and legacy, along with the artist's friend, veteran music journalist Fab 5 Freddy, in this extended discussion with MSNBC’s Ari Melber. Excerpts of this interview aired on MSNBC's "The Beat with Ari Melber."

The Basquiat family is lovely. So tragic that they lost him at such a young age.

I love your show Ari Melber!!! Art, using expression and the emotions of people who have been oppressed and beaten down, is one of the truest forms of using the right to freedom of speech.... In visual form.

@@punapeter It's obvious by this man's popularity and by the impact his art had on people nationally and internationally, that you are definitely wrong. Cave art tells stories. Let that sink in.

This was a really cool interview and I'd love to see more like it. Just saw Seeing Loud: Basquiat and Music at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Montreal and it was great! Video clips, photos, lots of cool old stuff, but there's nothing like seeing Basquiat's paintings with old school hip hop, Charlie Parker, and opera blasting along nice and loud. The explosion of music, the club scenes and the street sounds that surrounded him in 80s New York all made it into his art. Ari rocks for doing this. And nice to see Fab 5 Freddy looking so good!

I always enjoy Ari's reporting and take on things, but this is just so special. Thank you so much for taking time to share this with the world. Jean-Michel is like a star that collapsed under its own weight and in the process became a supernova. I love that his artwork, and through it his essence, not only lives on but shines brighter than ever.

I enjoyed the two amazing exhibitions I saw on JMB here in Paris, I wish I could have seen this one. His art and his trajectory are just exceptional. I also was lucky to have a colleague who knew him when he used to live in Paris (one of the story hé told me is just great). I love that his sisters tell us more about his background and story because too many erroneous things were said about him sometimes depicting him like this heroin addict/prostitute and it always made me mad. He was a genius and a very intelligent and sensitive soul who was on a mission. I think some of the people he met were bad encounters and leeches who tried to take advantage of his talent but his light was just too bright...RIP Jean-Michel

I almost missed this phenomenal post Ari and I loved this interview and had never heard of Basquiat until I saw the film about him. Jeffrey Wright did such an amazing job in that film and David Bowie Will always be my favorite Andy Warhol. It’s so sad that he joined the 27 club.

Typical childhood living in Brooklyn during that time period. Kids during that time would make tiny booklets that were like a movie when you flip the pages. Was was growing up in Brooklyn at that time. The museums were free during that time and everyone often visited. Meeting Andy Warhol was the turning point of discovery which was a stroke last of luck. So many young artist were never discovered yet lived the same life style in Brooklyn. So many young people painted all over the walls, sidewalks and subways in the City. His life as a Black person was not very different from other Blacks dealing with life in the city, as well as racism that continues today. Everyone rode bikes, wore Afros and dreads. Unfortunately, Jean often sold his paintings for heroin. His family didn’t have much to do with him as they project to know. Yet, when he died, they suddenly became very involved with making money from his art.

Nice interview with good people but JMB had very little to do with his sisters once he left home and you can tell from their responses that they still have very little insight into his creative years in downtown NYC...However they are his blood relatives and heads of his estate so as they themselves approach retirement age why not cash in like everyone else has on JMB's brilliance
