Bass Comparison 2: Dingwall NG vs. Combustion in the Mix

This is a follow-up to my first video, comparing a Music Man Bongo 6, Spector Euro 6, and an Ibanez SR506:
• Bass Comparison: Music...
I used the exact same HX presets, same mix as in the first video, EQs set flat once again. Pickups are set to bridge / middle in parallel.
This gives a pretty isolated view of the sound influence of the instrument, especially on the difference (or lack thereof) between the NG and Combustion types. However, it's not at all a good indicator for how good these basses can sound! The presets were originally created with the SR; while recording for this video, I felt that the Dingwalls can sound much better with different settings. So this video is only intended to show how different they sound - others have much better demos showing the optimum sounds.
Songs are from my originals band Atlas Cube (www.atlas-cube.de) - I picked sections that showcase a wide variety of sounds and techniques. Zakko Droozer has a regular grit sound with strummed high chords, syncopated riffing including legato runs, sustained low chords & a heavy slap section. Fortress of Rain features plucked arpeggios with heavy delay and low riffing with distortion. Full studio versions of the songs can be streamed for free at soundcloud:
/ zakko-droozer
/ fortress-of-rain
Unfortunately I couldn't get a NG 6-string to try out. The strummed chords in Zakko and arpeggios in Fortress sound quite different on the higher register of the 5-string - needless to say, this is not part of the NG / Combustion difference…
As always, let me know what you think in the comments below!

Thanks for checking it out! If I may add from some discussions over the years since this was uploaded: I recorded this with the preamps flat - there are more pronounced differences when the preamp EQs are used more heavily. Cheers from Gernany!

Really nice bass. It would be nice to have gigs. So buying a dingwall is a sound investment.

Definitely nice basses! Btw, I'm noticing more and more of them popping up on the used market - with a little bit of patience, some opportunities should come up... Gigs are starting to pick up again here in Germany - how is it in your part of the world?

I wasn't expecting original music, but I like this a lot. Especially the last part, "Fortress of Rain". I have a Helix too. That spacey delay patch sounds so good. As for the basses, they're very similar in the mix. I'm not a fan of the NG looks, though. I wish that they made the Combustion without the pickguard.

Hey, thanks man, very much appreciated! If you like the song, it's available on all major streaming platforms ;) Regarding the similarity of the basses, I must add that I recorded with flat EQs. Later I found out that the main differences in the preamps come out when you start turning EQ dials... On the Combustion looks, I recently saw a picture of one with the pickguard removed. It had the same top & finish below, so you'd really only have the screw holes visible it you took off the pickguard. The matte plastic really looks a bit plain... The NG's fake carbon-fibre look on the pickguard is definitely nicer - unfortunately they don't offer them for replacements on the Combustions. Cheers from Germany!

@@BoneMachineMUC I just found out that Dingwall is now offering Combustions with the option to not have the pickguard installed. Apparently, they still give you the pickguard and screws, but no holes, I guess. That seems enticing.

I dig the track Fortress Of Rain! Any chance I could get the multi-tracks to mix it for you? With the two Dingwall bass tracks! :)

Hi, thanks for checking out the song! I think a remix would be a great idea - in retrospect, I think the original mix (our first release ~6 years ago) certainly has some improvement potential... I'll check with the rest of the band, but I'd expect everybody to be cool with sharing the stems. However, I don't have a full track recorded with the Dingwalls - I only recorded the sections in this video + another trial in my "new delay preset" video. The original track is played with a Warwick Streamer. It would be cool to hear the heavy parts with the Combustion; maybe I'll just cut it again... Will send you a message when I have talked to the band! Cheers from Germany

@@BoneMachineMUC Right on man, thanks for the reply! Honestly, even if it was just that section that'd be cool too! Especially with the Dingwalls! Either way, I'd be down! Thanks, man! :)

Which one do you prefer though? :D I just ordered a Combustion 6 though, what are your opinions? :)
@BoneMachineMUC
@BoneMachineMUC 4 года назад
Hmm hard question - sound-wise, I think the difference is really small. Haptics are also just about the same, especially the neck and fret fan. I do think the input jack on the NG is better and the "carbon fibre" look pickguard looks cool, but I preferred the quilt maple veneer with transparent burst finished over the racecar finishes for the NG (although the swirls are really unique aswell), that's why I ended up going with the Combustion. Hope you got an in stock Combustion and don't have to wait months until delivery! I'm sure you'll love it, they're really fantastic basses.

@@danielchandc Ah man, those waiting times are cruel! I think the Canadian models are even worse, people are waiting over a year for those... I was a bit lucky, got the Combustion shipped from Bass Direct in the UK so it was here within a few days. But hey, all that anticipation will just make it more exciting when you get it. Which top/finish did you get?

Right - they do have different preamps (Darkglass / EMG), which is noticeable when playing solo. But in the context of a whole band, the difference is very small...

Sorry, but this is not a mix... Interesting though!
@BoneMachineMUC
@BoneMachineMUC 4 года назад
You're right, as I just used the raw tracks from the recording, mix is not the correct term - what I mean to say is that it's a comparison with context of other Instruments. The two basses sound distinctly different when played solo (mainly due to the different preamp); in this comparison, the difference is not very big...
