Bass Comparison: Music Man Bongo, Spector Euro & Ibanez SR in the Mix

I originally just did this for myself, but I figured you might be interested aswell: A comparison of 3 different basses, using the exact same HX preset, in the mix of some songs by my originals band Atlas Cube.
Basses used:
Music Man Bongo 6 HH
Spector Euro 6 LX-TW
Ibanez SR 506
The Bongo and Spector were basses I was considering to buy. The Ibanez is in for a contrast - played by itself, it's sound can't keep up with the other two in my opinion.
Note: It's not a fair comparison. The Bongo came from the dealer with a poor setup and rather old strings; the Spector and the Ibanez had pretty fresh ones. I'm sure the Bongo can sound more crisp. The presets were set for another bass (Warwick PS Streamer 6 LX), and the EQ on the basses was flat. So there certainly is room for improvement.
Nevertheless, I found it interesting to what difference the basses actually make in a mix. Hope it's interesting for you aswell.

@@BoneMachineMUC And what was it that led you to decide for the Dingwall? I also have the possibility of going for one, also for a Spector LT 5, but those TWs seem to convince me. Any recommendations in this regard? Greetings from Chile 🇨🇱
@BoneMachineMUC
@BoneMachineMUC Год назад
@@folivera87 I think the Dingwall would certainly not be a bad choice. At the time, I was searching for the tightest possible B-string (and I also thought Dingwalls are really cool & modern). Later I saw that the 35" is plenty for good B-strings, especially when using thicker strings. My TW 5-string has a 142 low string tuned to A0, and it feels tight. With the Dingwall fanned fret, I was never entirely happy about the technique implications, especially playing high up on the neck, as well as the right hand position (basically, if you don't learn to shift along with the scale angle, you end up playing the higher strings closer to the bridge than the lower ones). Finally, as good as the Dingwall sound is: I feel like the Spector sound is just perfect and very special!

That spector growl cuts through every time. Only a warwick can go toe to toe with it, if you ask me. The one place it's weak is the slap tone. To me at least it sounds really weak.
@BoneMachineMUC
@BoneMachineMUC 3 года назад
Thanks for the input! Yeah, there is this unique quality cutting through with Spectors. I think the slap sound can be much better than in this example. I used the exact preset originally created with the SR, not tweaked for the Spector's needs (especially considering the hotter output with the active pickups). I didn't keep the Euro6 from this video, but later ended up with a Euro5 that is staying - maybe it's time for a new comparison that properly lets it shine :)

Good point! Even considering that these are the MK Korean-made Bartolinis often talked down upon, the SR keeps up quite well in this comparison. Looking at what some higher profile players can do with them (early Omnific comes to mind), it's really an attractive instrument considering the budget.

Ibanez sounds really nice, especialy cause it is the least expensive of the three basses. Maybe it has had the freshest set of strings on it? Bongo is the most versatile of the 3 but I somehow do not like how it looks. If it had fresh set of strings on it, it would have outmatched the competition. Spector has the most beautiful look but it lacks in tone options cause there is only 2 band EQ on it.

Hi Damagoj, thanks for the feedback! The Ibanez and Spector had fresh strings indeed; the Bongo did not (for which I've taken quite a bit of flak sind making this video…). Thanks for the insightful feedback man! One of my take-aways from this exercise was that the Ibanez could keep up pretty well when "buried" in some context, especially considering the much lower price tag - the SR50X is the series with the Bartolini MK1s many player scoff at... I did end up buying a Spector Euro (although a different one, 5 String). Never got as excited about just a DI tone before as with the Spectors. Right now I'm planning out a new comparison with the 5-string Spector Euro, a Dingwall Combustion, an older Warwick Corvette and a Fender Jazz bass - stay tuned if you're interested. Cheers!

Thanks! I would expect most people to find the SR easier to play out of those two: shorter scale, lighter weight, less head pull. But you'd need to be ok with the very thin neck. Also, string tension is higher for the Spector (a good thing IMO), which becomes critical for tunings below standard. @@BoneMachineMUC that depends on which one I'm playing, as I've been a Spector endorsed artist since around 2007. Most of mine are the Euro neck-thru series with the crown inlays ranging from late 90's to early 2000's in year range with most having the EMG JH-1 pickups with either the Spector Tone-pump circuitry or the Aguilar OB-P1 preamp. I also have a couple of their Legend series that I like for smaller venues. Those have the Bartolini pickups and the standard preamp made for those models. Thanks for the comment man! Interesting that you're saying that - I'm working on a follow-up comparison that will include a Spector Euro 5LX and a Warwick Corvette Std 5, made in Germany in 2000. Slightly lopsided in today's pricing, but I think it'll still be a fair game comparison to check out the tonal difference. Stay tuned if you're interested!

However, there's another issue: Even if you have all the amazing basses in the world, you still can only play one at a time ;) And even beyond that: With limited time to practice, I find it a bit difficult to keep switching between major types (like a 34" Jazz bass 4-String and a 37-34" multiscale Dingwall 6-String)...

@BoneMachineMUC
@BoneMachineMUC 2 года назад
Hmm that's hard to answer. In my opinion, the Spector sounded the best, the Bongo had the best playability, the SR had the best value for it's price tag. After the video I ended up buying a Dingwall Combustion instead (can be heard in the second bass comparison video) - but I later sold it and went to the Spector Euro after all :) Which one sounds the best to your ears?

Depending on the model, there are still some differences though - I ended up comparing another Spector Euro (5) to a Warwick Corvette (not Streamer); those are quite different. Cool, I'd definitely recommend checking out a Spector if it's in your budget! Back when this video was made, I ended up getting a Dingwall Combustion for the 6-string. But the Spector stayed stuck in my head - so now I have a 5-string Euro (can be heard in another comparison video) :))) To be fair to the Ibanez, it's really on a lower level than the others - I put in into the video as a reference point. I agree though that it doesn't quite add the specific tone / character of the others.

@BoneMachineMUC
@BoneMachineMUC 4 года назад
Thanks for the comment Steve. One thing to keep in mind: it's a comparison with the exact same preset for all basses, and I originally set it up with the Ibanez, and with a flat EQ. I noticed this heavily with the Dingwall Combustion I settled on - the old presets don't work with it at all. So in retrospect, I see this video as an interesting isolated comparison of the Sound influence of the bass, but it's not an adequate test of sounds tailored to the characteristics of each Instrument. Nevertheless, I did feel that the Spector is not ideal for slapping as it has that highly distiguishable sound - works great in a heavy mix with regular playing, but a bit odd for slapping for my taste.
@stevemccambridge5947

Fysix that’s a damn shame because I’m a funk/jazz style bassist and slapping is essential for me. Thanks for the insight
