The Slide Technique is a great technique for double and single strokes with our feet. It allows you to have very powerful and fast double strokes without making any effort and it also allow you to have very powerful single stroke rolls! It's also very good to play many bass drum strokes in a row in grooves without loosing power, let's break this technique down together and see how we can work on it!

I really respect that James learns all the techniques he can, it takes a lot of discipline. I think it's important to have different tools when playing fast. Swivel technique is probably the most common and powerful in the genre but I saw an interview with Kollias where he said it messed his knees up so bad he had to get carried off stage!

Yes, it is important to know as many techniques as possible to have more control of the drums for sure! Me and Kollias have a very different approach to the Swivel, I have never felt any pain in my knees or ankles, legs etc...

Love using this technique in a 16th note triplet feel. I believe I learned it by removing triggers/mics and having the need for power.

I have enjoyed using the technique at 6:30 onward of having the whole foot come to rest on the second strike including the heel. My question; even just for single strokes I think it’s relaxing to start heel up and end with the whole foot on the pedal including the heel contacting the heel plate- lots of power too. Thoughts?

Is this the rolling glide version of Iron cobra series? (with the linear/ rounded chain cam)

Thanks James. For the last several years I have been incorporating the entire leg, pivoting from the hip for doubles. I find this fatiguing over time. Do you find the slide technique less strain and fatiguing?..thanks-

This technique is possible for any type of pedals? For example, my pearl eliminator hasn't spring under the foorbard, so a haven't that good rebound like in your Cobra. I tryed this technique, but i can't generate rebound, also my pedals don't come back.

Yeah, you should be able to do it with any pedal. I tried this on an Eliminator some time ago and it was working! Maybe the settings that you have on the pedal aren't correct for this kind of technique, or maybe you're pressing down too much and the pedal won't come back?

I’ve been trying to learn this technique recently but when wearing a shoe, my foot gets stuck on the second stroke of the double. Is there way to get around this?

YES! Get rid of friction between your foot and the pedalboard. Use a smooth/shiny pedalboard and wear shoes with smooth leather soles (a shoe cobbler will fit them to your existing preferred footwear). Alternatively, you can pull a large sock eg a walking sock or ski sock over your shoe, which significantly reduces friction. Sounds crazy? I've practiced for months now with a sock over my shoe and my pedal technique, speed and control has massively improved. Experiment with the pedal spring tension too and try to reduce the tension resistance if possible. Advanced fluent technique is not about tight pedal springs, locked ankles and jabbing hard at the pedal...when you get it right you'll be lightly dancing on the pedal board and it will feel pretty effortless!

For me it is hard to add this into the fills like for example quart fills (2 strokes on the kick 2 strokes with hands). Any help someone. Thanks

Usually it has to do with the space between the notes. Something that made a difference to me was when I realized that the leg motion falls on the second stroke of the 2 bass drum strokes, so I started to think it in this way: k-K-h-h instead of K-k-h-h, so like if the main stroke of the double strok of the foot was on the 2nd 16th note and not the first. It kind of balanced the spacing between the notes. I hope this makes sense and helps.
