As I mentioned in the video, with some content, running towers as Large and LFE+Main can sound pretty good, usually in the higher bass range. But to really know if it's "correct" (not losing any quality), listening to bottom heavy content really tells the tail, and "Killshot" by Eminem stood out to me as a very effective acid test.
Certainly, some of you may not notice much of a change, and that's OK. For others, it will be obvious, it all depends on your particular setup, and even which settings you use.
I no longer run single subs as a general practice, because it sounds too "incomplete" and I recommend against single subs, but viewers have said they use Large and LFE+Main to reduce the negative effects of single subwoofers. I haven't tried this, but please share in the comments if it helps you. List your equipment to be even more helpful to other viewers. For sure, dual subwoofers make quite a difference in a lot of ways.
What I heard when switching back and forth was that in "Small", the bass was very well defined and powerful. Super clean and effortless with the deepest bass. Nothing was strained.
In Large and LFE+Main, the bass seemed a little more strained. While not super dramatic, it was noticeable. The deepest bass was not as clean. Keep in mind that the Ultra Towers do pretty good with this track on their own, so it's not like the towers aren't capable. Subs just did the bottom end better, which shouldn't be a surprise.
If it sounds like a hot mess in both Small and Large, it's probably time for new subs. Any of the subs from "The List" will have no problems with this track, especially if you run 2.
I briefly touched on the fact that when you have the speakers set to Small, it makes no difference whether you have it in "LFE" or "LFE+Main". In Small, the speakers are bass managed, regardless of the LFE setting.
