In our last video, we took a first look at the Ernie Ball Music Man Joe Dart Signature Bass. In this video, we'll compare it to some other Sterling basses in the Music Man lineup. We'll also see if a $200 bass can stand its ground against instruments costing 5 or 10 times as much.
In addition to the 2019 Joe Dart Sterling, we've also got an original 1994 Music Man Sterling, as well as an inexpensive "Sterling by Music Man" for comparison.

@@almostfreebass9105 I would also suggest mixing the audio levels of these type of videos so that the bass playing is louder relative to the talking. I always find myself cranking up the volume when you start playing but then turning it down again during the talking parts. That's just my opinion though.

I've got a few more planned in this series. I wanna cover a few basic tips for maintenance and then I plan on turning the SUB bass into a flatwound / passive bass just to hear the difference. Subscribe for more!

I bought a sub and stuck a Seymour Duncan in , and it sounds as good as any musicman I’ve heard , ,, and for a fraction of the cost and not too worried about damage from gigging etc

That's exactly what I use mine for. Most of the tone and feel of the big guys and I don't have to worry about it so much if it gets broken or stolen.

Great demo. I’ve owned several Musicman Sterlings over the past few years including a 2007 limited edition 4HH, three 4H, and three of the old USA made SUB Sterlings. I’m down to just the 2007 4HH because I realized I prefer the sound of a Jazz Bass. I love the feel of the Sterling, the dimensions of the bass and how it cuts through the mix like no other bass out there. What I decided I didn’t like as much as much was the signature twangy Musicman sound. I mean, I like it, just not all the time. With the flats and the passive pickup, Joe’s signature bass doesn’t have as much of that going on. But I much prefer his sound when he was using the Mexican Jazz Bass. By the way, that $200 Indonesian SUB does the Musicman sound pretty damned well for the money.
@almostfreebass9105
@almostfreebass9105 4 года назад
I find the Sterling has a lot less twang than the StingRay if you play it right. And you're absolutely right about the $200 SUB, that thing is great. I play that at all of my outdoor gigs so I don't have to worry about it, and it's always done well.

Did that SUB have like 20-year-old flatwounds on it? It sounded super muted, with no 'zang'. I've never played one, but the Sterling by Music Man Ray34 (Stingray) and SB14 (Sterling) sound very similar to their US counterparts, maybe slightly more mid scooped and with a little less available wooliness, but not dead like the SUB. It sounded like a passive bass with the tone rolled back. I love Ernie Ball Music Man Sterlings, they're my weapon of choice (I have a 2003 4H fretted and a 2012 4HS fretless currently) and I think the best and most versatile bass in the EBMM lineup for those who can't stand the looks, painted neck, or blend knob of the Bongos. I DESPERATELY want a Dart signature, but unless they build more in the future, it looks like I'll probably just have to build my own passive Sterling out of a regular one. I think a Nordstrand pickup, volume/tone with a push-push for series parallel would be the business. I suppose I can live without the flamed neck, but I'm not going to be happy about it. In short, from what I've heard here, look for a SBMM SB14 rather than the SUB, for another 150 bucks it sounds like a real Music Man and I've played them, they play very well for inexpensive basses. And for another couple hundred on top of that, if you look long enough, you can pick up one of the old USA SUB Sterlings, which are exactly like a standard Sterling with a slab body, solid colors only, and no series/single/parallel and in my opinion the best value in the bass world. I can't understand why EBMM discontinued the US SUB series, I guess I'm in the minority and they couldn't sell that many.

Great review! I like that you played everything fingerstyle. For sure the Dart and the Classic do sound better, but for six times the money better? I don't think so. I think the Sub Ray with a pickup upgrade would still be an incredible value. That said, the Classic was my favorite voice of those three.
@almostfreebass9105
@almostfreebass9105 4 года назад
I completely agree. The Classic just feels like a wonderfully balanced bass. With the neck and flats the Joe Dart is really smooth, and I can absolutely see how someone with his ability can tear up the fretboard on it. But not all of us are eating four pounds of white flour pasta every day, puttin' in the work to push that Bridgestone up the Alps. For us mere mortals, the Classic has that familiar Music Man bite and growl, while still having a wonderfully playable size and shape (the Stingray feels too big for me). A lot of people don't realize that very little of the cost of an instrument is in the hardware. There's an upgraded preamp from Seymour Duncan for the Classic that is only $150. Granted that's almost as much as I paid for the SUB (which is a Sterling also, and not a 'Ray) but I think that would give it most of the tone of its much more expensive sibling. Whenever I can get back to it, I'm planning on making a video with the SUB of first going directly passive (pickup -> output jack) and then eventually upgrading to an active/passive setup with an upgraded preamp.

I absolutely agree on your conclusion! I have an Aria Pro II RSB Standard from '83 which was about the cheapest bass back then, got it for less than 200 buck a couple of years ago. I actually wanted a cheap but well-made P-bass variant to put flats on. It's close to a Fender P construction-wise, but the pickup is closer to the bridge, almost in the StingRay position. If you pluck it closer to the neck, it can give you those Motown sounds. But if you pluck it closer to the bridge, it really sounds like Joe Dart! Now I just replaced the pickup. The original one was a very hot ceramic one, very loud but not very clear, and muddy/boomy with the tone down. The new one is an AlNiCo one, slightly hotter than vintage, and now it sounds much more balanced, and both more like a traditional Precision and the Vulfpeck sound, depending on how you play it.

I played a EBMM Sterling for many years (the American made version) and they are great basses. and the one in the video certainly sounds good. But I have to say that I really dug the Joe Dart in sound and looks (and that is coming from a guy who rarely uses flatwounds and generally does not like them). Too bad the folks at Music Man only made a handful of these. I'd love to get my hands on one.
@almostfreebass9105
@almostfreebass9105 4 года назад
I feel the exact same way about flatwounds. Outside of going for a dull, thuddy "classic" tone I never use them. The Joe Dart bass is absolutely worlds apart from that feeling though. Instead of being unresponsive to technique the way normal flats are, I can dial in however much attack or thump I want with the angle of my finger, and then the neck position and bridge position couldn't be more different. I think a lot of it is in the body and neck combo -- if you knock on the wood you can hear it ring like a bell. There's loads of harmonic info streaming out of it besides just that fundamental.

I can really tell how bright the Joe Dart Bass is compared to the other two. And how the SUB lives up to its namesake being the lowest of them all. Each one seems to have their own space within the bass range. But my favorite has to be the classic. What about you?

I've spent so many years with the Sterling Classic that it definitely feels comfortable in my hands. But the tone and the way the Joe Dart bass actually plays is just so different from anything I've ever played ... it's definitely my favorite.

What strap are you using? Seems really comfortable
@almostfreebass9105
@almostfreebass9105 4 года назад
It's a KLIQ AirCell strap: www.amazon.com/KLIQ-AirCell-Electric-Neoprene-Adjustable/dp/B01I0BGYM8 I got it specifically because the Sterling Classic is a heavy bass (almost 11lbs). The KLIQ strap also has their "AirCell" padding underneath to help with airflow. Then the last section of the strap is slightly elastic like a suspension, so jumping around becomes a lot more comfortable too.

Great stuff bro! I love my sub but is a bit different than yours it has six bolts and does not have the neck relief. It also says made in china but beyond the differences I love mine ( the pickup is a little hot but that can be dialed back)

Where can i find the sterling sub? I can't find it anywhere on Google, I only find Stingrays. Does it have a specific name? I want it please help 😂
@almostfreebass9105
@almostfreebass9105 4 года назад
Not only is there a confusing mess of names, but now it looks like all they offer are the Stingrays. I can't find any of the actual Sterling body styles any more. The one I got was second-hand was already quite a few years old. The main difference is that the StingRay body is a full 1 inch wider (13.5") than the Sterling (12.5") so maybe that will help you find one. Personally I can feel the difference in weight and size, and definitely prefer the smaller Sterling.

@@8DenverBass I agree, it's completely confusing now. It's tough to even find them on sites like reverb.com but that's going to be your best bet. Just look for a model without "Ray" in the title and maybe ask the seller what the body width is.
