I recall years ago, Eddie Murphy said he wanted to do a western. But a gritty one, not a comedy. I know he doesn't have Bass's size but he is old enough, athletic enough and I think could play the role well. Bass Reeves is loooong overdue for a good biopic.
I read that bass was a cowboy. Noble as that job is, Bass was a lawman, a job at which he excelled. He was honest and very smart. Amazingly, he couldn’t read or write. He had someone read the wanted posters to him From the reading he would commit it to memory. He and his wife had 11 children. Since he spent so much time on the trail, I think I know what he did when he was at home! Had to arrest his own son who had murdered his wife. Bass died from what they called “ Bright’s Disease” a chronic inflammatory condition of the kidneys-basically kidneys fail to function normally. No real treatment at that time. I have great respect for Bass Reeves. He was one of a kind!⭐️
The story about bass reeves was unknown to me before watching this video. A finer gentleman never lived! He suffered great tragedy within his family life losing so many children to death and that in itself is a tremendous burden on anyone’s heart. I am very glad his son was freed from prison and although bass reeves was not alive to witness it, I think he knew about it from his service in heaven! Blessed BE, This story is worth it’s weight in gold.!.
Thank you Mr Skinner for your excellent documentaries. I didn't know alot of the things that you pointed out about Bass Reeves. He was truly an honorable law man.
Hi edagdwg God blessed them all life is soooooo real learning about pass history shows not much has changed . Changing laws is what is happening around the world today sad .life is soooooo real Linda j. Peace
Thank you, Jerry!! I appreciate that you lauded Mr. Reeves on your list of wonderful and thought provoking videos! I have long admired Mr. Reeves and one has to wonder why a Hollywood version of his story hasn't been made recently. What a man! Thank you Jerry for always providing a great watch/listen to bring us some enjoyment from this insane world.
Movie was attempted, but in today's Market set in a mal-thinking society; an uncontrolled Black roughed individualist, family oriented, free thinking successful conservative lawman fighting obsessively for justice; could NOT SELL!
I have a roll top desk that was made before Oklahoma was a state. It was originally in a meat packing plant. It was given to me by the great grandson of the original owner.
Well Jerry. I don't know how but you did it again !!!! Its stuff like this that makes me never want to break the law .. THANK you Frank from montana...
Mr. Jerry Skinner what a magnificent biography this was!! So informative with great detail about an African American lawman that I'd never heard of before. I appreciate you & all your biographies.❤️
Excellent story and account! This is the longest and best account of Bass' life I've seen to date - bravo! I am a Reeves, and currently attempting to find out if my great grandfather was Bass' son, Edgar. My grandfather, Edgar was born in about 1898, which would have put Bass' son, Edgar, at about age 22, when my great-grandfather was born, if he is the same person. A cousin and I are attempting to finalize our connections to Bass, if any, but the timelines, along with other similarities are present and leaning in that direction. I'm looking forward to seeing the new Paramount Plus T.V. series on this wonderful man, historical figure, and lawman. 😊
It's too bad they never gave this fine man the honor he deserves for being a great lawman and a hero to all for his carrying out and respect for justice for all, he deserves a big star in his role in American western history , he was a true American
Now someone should make a movie about this impressive man. Although it would be hard to condense his life story into a couple hours it would make for a fantastic movie.
With the new series playing on Paramount “ The Lawman Bass Reeves “ it is especially nice to hear you tell the story of Bass Reeves. Thank you for this Jerry!! I will refer others to check out your documentary.
Jerry, this was without a doubt, one of the best documentaries you have produced to date. I enjoy all of your projects, but this one was really special, thank you & God Bless you & your family.
I was a Calif cop in the late eighties into the ninties. I was believed to be a cop, even in my early twenties, because my mannerism, and I was told, I was just to straight( honest, polite, ??)....The story of Bass Reeves is of such heroism ,bravery, and honesty....It tells me that a good cop can always be better.
I watched a show on cable about Bass Reeves. Jerry Skinner has provided a lot more history of a great lawman than the show did.. Jerry I love watching your videos. You always give us should details of a person's life. Thank You so much for all your hard work. Your voice is so wonderful and makes it easy to get wrapped up in the stories.
This is the best presentation of the life of Bass Reeves. I agree with most of it and I have spent years researching the man, I disagree with the statement that he was never shot. I found a doctor's report where he had tried to remove a bullet from Bass's leg and decided that it was too close to an artery and feared that he could bleed to death if he failed. In conjunction with that one of his obituaries stated that he was buried with a bullet in his leg.
Forgot to mention that in his later years he was not allowed to go in restaurants or theaters were whites were in .After he made the area safe for them Why has there never been a movie about him .they keep making movies of whyatt earp who was a great man But bass reaves record of arrests and gunfights far exceeded whyatt earp Truly a great man R I P Bass Reaves
Mr. Skinner, to get to bass reeves in Muskogee, ok. His grave is located across the street from a trucking company called Trucks for you, there is a white building which is a business that can take you part of the way there with permission of course. The trail is about a 30 minute walk to there. The grave is marked. That cemetery is also know as the cemetery for former slaves in Muskogee. The property right in from of the cemetery is for sell so the while business building is the only way there to the grave. Yes I have been there to see it not to long ago. The house the bass reeves lived was on Howard street but now it is where Walmart stands, his house would have been located where the garden center is at now.
Several of us went to Big Nose Kate’s grave today and toasted her with a shot of Rye Whiskey! We do that about once a month! Such a man! We would be so honored to have him today!
I had read about Mr. Reeves before, but there is so much to learn about a man like him, so wanted to hear it from you also. He was a very honorable man who deserves much recognition. We can only imagine what he went through in his life time, and his history must be saved. Thanks Jerry, you never fail me.
Thank you again Jerry, what a remarkable story of this man. I knew some of this story, but you filled in all the blanks I didn’t know. You are so good at what you do. Thank you my friend, I look forward to your documentary’s everyday. It was a wonderful surprise to see this one this morning. I will watch it again, please keep em coming, stay well my friend, Augie and Jill Blase, Winter Springs, Florida.🤠
Yeah. I have a question. WHERE THE HELL IS THIS MAN’S TV SHOW??? You have HBO cracking out cranking material and bullcrap left and right, yet THIS MAN is left to history?? I’m calling bull!! This is a legend of the West, and should be celebrated!
Proof, not that it is needed, that racism is alive and well in the USA, if he had been white he would have been far better known than Earp, Masterson, Hickok, etc all put together. Thankfully there are a few good souls out there bringing his story to us. A big shout-out to them.
Undoubtedly the most accurate account I've heard. Realistically describing a competent, capable, and honorable man without the PC Fanboyism so nausea inducing in the Wokeism of what's been passing for "Media" since George Floyd's Fentanyl Fiasco.
lol Man that’s just some envy mixed with some degree of hate speaking in your head, find something positive and non existent things like “woke-ism”, which we know is code for black in your, shall I say… ‘social group’ 😂 You must be quite one happy, friendly guy… NOT.. lol
One would think that he get a tombstone and his honorary title be on it. No, he gets a unmarked grave burial. Unbelievable, such an outstanding Federal Deputy Marshall. What a great achievement for a man who came out of slavery and made a name (good name) for himself and his family. Faces of the Forgotten should check him out and get a marker there for Law Enforcement Reeves!
