I like all the high harmonies. I also think, though this song was very exciting when it came out, that Geoff's voice has only improved over the years and is currently even better than it was here. He's even improved how he composes for it. Great growth! Thanks for the analysis, PB!

You can either make the musical aesthetics folks happy, or the crowd shouting "Do it! Do it!" and waiting for the low notes. Hard to do both. I'm just happy that he is making content.

Apparently I’m going to voice an unpopular opinion, but I actually like the E1 and feel like it does fit. The whole time Geoff is building this sort of roller coaster of his registers with increasing intervals between the highs and lows as the song builds. His highest notes come right before the very lowest at the end and it feels appropriate to me musically. I would also keep in mind the context of when this came out. This was only his second solo arrangement and I think he was still trying out new things and experimenting with his sound. He’s said that if he could go back and change anything it would be to his earliest videos because he didn’t realize how popular they would become.

Big question: was that low note at the end necessary? Probably not! Did I love it anyway? Yes, I did!!! Was I hoping for these low notes from him just like so many others? Yes, I was! His velvety voice, his incredible range and his impressive talent keep drawing me in all the time! I also love your voice and your reactions and analysis of VP and Geoff. Cheers to a happy, healthy and successful 2023 for you, Peter!!! Keep up keeping up!💕🥰

It's become a signature of his solo work so I find no problems with the 'end of the song' low notes myself. I don't know that it was 100% needed, but I also don't think it took anything away from the song.
@joshnoe5523
@joshnoe5523 Год назад
What is "necessary"? Creating music is art, as you well know. Just like a painting, it's all subjective. All a cover does is tell you what kind of paint you have to use. You still get to paint it how you want. Some will like it some won't. The best part is that neither view is wrong! P.S. please do the new VP ASAP. Love the channel man keep it up!

That ending E1 might not be necessary, but I feel like it ends a warm, sombre piece with a very warm, chocolatey note. I really like this E1, and (I could be wrong) I think it’s probably his clearest and richest E1 to date :D

Hi Peter. I love Geoff. Geoff rules. ((wink)) That out of the way, I really love this cover - the arrangement, the vocals. I love that he put the low notes in there as a stretch and as so many people only come for the bass notes, but I also adore that he goes up into his higher register so beautifully.

Geoff has said that if he wants to do acapella work he does it with VoicePlay. In his own covers he's showing more of his talent for arranging I guess. I don't know that it was necessary but I actually liked tha final low note. He uses that E1 a few times in VoicePlay's latest, Nothing Else Matters which is stunning reactors all over the place. :)
@Bass_Krispies

Yes Peter I did like that voice crack. Although I agree somewhat that the low note is unnecessary, it's still his best E1 in my opinion Still love your analyses
@That_Jake_Guy
@That_Jake_Guy Год назад
For me, I totally understand thinking the E1 is a little unnecessary for the ending. However I think the reason it’s there is because this was Geoff’s 2nd ever cover he did on his channel, so it makes sense to me that he’d be showing off his range and subharmonics in this way. Kind of like an introduction to who he is as an artist and showing what he’s capable of. A lot of people knew him from voice play as the low note guy so most of his audience is there for the low notes, especially when he first started doing covers. But I do agree that it is a little unnecessary for this particular piece. And it’s not just this one but there’s been a few instances in other covers where he’s done the same. But I think it tends to be more of a business choice a lot of the time which is smart considering his audience
Год назад
Hey Peter, I can totally see where you are coming from with Geoff's E1 at the end. And I agree it is not necessary in this song, but where he placed it, it is a good compromise between showing of and sounding good in the context of the song in my opinion. I have a similar problem with one of his bass-drops in his lead part of their Nothing Else Matters cover. But I guess debating if one single note in a song was the correct choice when the rest is so beautifully done is complaining on a very high level.
@Juilene1965

@Tevoro1962
@Tevoro1962 Год назад
You know, I thought the same thing about that ending E1 --- well, at least at first. I thought it smacked a little of "look what I can do." But then I thought - shit, if *I* had a voice like Geoff's, and if I could hit that E1 as believably as he did - and if I was aware of just how much it stirred hormones, I'd give my audience what it came for - that happy ending aimed at making listeners stir in their seats.

Geoff rules ... for the algorithm. I always learn something new in your analyses. It's fun to watch the evolution of Geoff's style in his solo stuff, as an arranger and producer/director/editor as well as continuing to develop his voice. Was that last E1 necessary? No. Was it awesome? Yes. Blackbird was released less than a year after Oogie Boogie's Song, which is when he first hit a usable E1. In Blackbird he's practicing a note that's still relatively new, given that he's been singing professionally since he was 17.
@vulcanivy
@vulcanivy Год назад
I love that you’re going back to Geoff’s “old” videos. Now for the debate. I agree that it may be little unnecessary, but I believe he did it because it was one of his first solo videos. I have always thought of it that way since he’s such a brilliant arranger; he knew it didn’t belong. He just probably wanted to end with a Wow factor.
@vidiot5533
@vidiot5533 Год назад
This piece felt more like a resume than anything to me. He wanted to show he has tenor, he has baritone, and he has bass with extra bass. He gave each a spotlight, and to that end, how could you not throw in a clean subharmonic? If there was ever a moment where he needed to apply for a position in a group as a singer, he could slap this song in an email titled "Thanks for the part".

This is on of my favorites from Geoff, so I'm so glad to se you analyse it. I love Geoff's cover of this song so much more than the original because of the flow that Geoff has put in this. I actually don't mind the low note at the end, it might not have been necessary, but it creates contrast to the high notes that came before it, and it seems to be what a lot of people want or wanted at the time Geoff released this cover. Also with all your singing along to this cover from Geoff, I can't help myself but hoping that we one day might get a Peter Barber and Geoff Castellucci duet ❤

I adore the low note at the end of this song, I always notice it with a little smile, very much like the way I listen to the long notes in your Creep cover. The only thing that I don't care for in this song is the very high high notes. That's what feels unnecessary to me (and it also kind of hurts my ears, sensory problems). Was really great to hear your insights on this one!

Was really hoping you'd do an analysis of this! Thanks! I think for Geoff's normal MO the big drop at the end is expected. Necessary? Maybe not that low, but being honest I love it. His legato style makes the song really relaxing, especially coupled with the styling of his piano work. It's a fine line, since much more legato would make it difficult to differentiate/understand some words. Overall I really love his rendition.

I love Geoff's voice and work, and I LOVE your analyses, so when you discuss Geoff's singing I'm always thrilled. I agree with you that the ending low note isn't necessary. It's amazing and his voice gives me chills, but the note almost sounds kind of sinister because it's so dark. For me it doesn't work with the light, flowy, smooth feel of the rest of this arrangement. ALSO! I always appreciate your analyses (and respectful, honest critiques). This song has some of my favourite harmonies from Geoff, but I have to say I agree about the E1. However, it's not hard to see why he put it in, judging by many of the comments here alone - people love those jaw-dropping notes! I almost always do as well, just not as much here. I think that in both his solo and VP work he's generally trying to balance his musicianship against being an entertainer, and people are going to have mixed (and sometimes very strong) opinions one way or the other about that. He's a fascinating artist and I'm on board for whatever he does next!

This is one of my favorite Geoff covers, but I agree on that E1. There are only a few of Geoff's low notes, which don't sound quite right in the context of the song for me. This one is one. There is one in If I Were a Rich Man, which I think you pointed out as well. There is also one in their new cover of Nothing Else Matters, which I bet you will agree with. Many don't seem to mind these choices, and others seem to have a problem with a lot more low notes he uses, so I dont think there are any choices which everyone will appreciate. But I'll take the 99.7% of his musical choices that I absolutely love with the .3% I don't completely agree with over any other artist out there.

Geoff has come a long long way on his sound; has worked his butt off --- and let's pinpoint that somewhere near SingOff time ........... he's progressed big time; not only with VoicePlay -- but his Solo stuff. The progression showed placement where it didn't necessarily belong, somewhat out of place or not fitting ---- but because he could. Call it pride or ego ---- but in the last so many yrs, placement has been much better where it does/can "fit"; it just sounds good showing the hard work. (If what I've said makes any sense other than a circle that goes nowhere!) Be Safe

I agree with you on this one, though agree - his fans are there for the basement notes. I simply appreciate his musicianship

It was entirely not necessary. But I loved it. :)

You are right. That last note, although beyond impressive, it is more freakish than integral to the piece.

I'd say the ending E1 would sound amazing with a simple E major chord above there (E4-G#4-B4) But like let the E1 be solo for a second and then slightly hit with the chord then grow intensity and quickly release every voice. I believe that would be sound great
