I'm only nitpicking because I know you appreciate technical terminology and jargon. With that being said, and as unbelievable as it may be, Geoff actually describes himself as a baritone with a bass range. From a technical perspective, he's correct
@johndeeregreen4592
@johndeeregreen4592 3 года назад
Sort of. His natural speaking voice is mid-bass and he is quite comfortable singing in baritone, then blasting those low notes. But, technically, he is a natural bass, just because of his natural speaking voice being so low; he just learned to push into contrabass.

I always comment on how nimble Geoff is with his vocals. He's able to not only hit the notes, but sustain them without sounding strained or forced. Most (not all) basses are lucky to hit some of those notes, and often they are just a sound, whereas with Geoff, I can always hear and understand the actually words. Love your reaction and breakdown!

Pretty sure that note you were trying to identify was an A1. It sounded like a G#1 to me too, but an A would make more sense with the chord. That should be an A chord in this key. You wouldn't normally put a G# in the bass on an A chord. If you're going to sing a major 7th chord you almost always put the 7th on top to avoid the minor 9th interval. Besides, it didn't sound like a major 7th chord. It sounded like a straight major.

I enjoy your analysis every bit as much as the singers / vocalist redition of these songs. My son is a Autistic young man, he so loved music as a baby and young child I encourage him by taking him for piano lessons. The instructor was ex Russian Opera singer, this women loved music. ( Reminds me of your passion for music) On James third week of lessons she ask if she could have a word with me after James lesson, alone?. I returned after his lesson where she ask "how many years has James been taking lessons?" I said three weeks why do you ask? She said the first week she showed James on the piano notes and how they sound, she was shocked the next week as James got every note she played correct, in order to impress upon me how rare this she drove it home by explaining she had college age students who have been students thier whole life yet could not do what James did in one week! Reminding me the students she taught were 22/23 years old!. I didn't say anything about this conversation to James right away, I waited a couple days before asking him how he was able to memorize the notes? He said simply "I can see the note and they are all different colors, I just remembered what color each note is ! Mind blown...not yet? I asked "where do you see them?" Just a I little annoyed he answered, "when she plays a note the note is right there in front of me!" Where I asked? "In the air over the piano!" Mind blown for sure god does bestow talents where needed, I think you too love music so much and for me it is inspiring, keep up the good work...music is food for the soul and conscience!

Tomi P, another incredible bass singer, recently released a mulit-layer/multi-track (like this one from Mr. Castellucci) cover he did of Hellfire from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Several reviewers/commenters of that video have stated that on (at least) one point in the arrangement he is covering 6 OCTAVES across all of his recorded layers. I don't want to spoil it for you, but one of the reviewers places the lowest note he hits at a location not even on the standard piano keyboard. The guy is pretty amazing. I hate his range. It completely dwarfs mine at both ends. I can't get anywhere that low or that high. Must you be so insufferably awesome!?

Paul MacCartney was being interviewed about this song. He said that he had written as a tribute for the American Civil Rights Movement which makes me love it even more. Geoff has done a magnificent arrangement on Blackbird.

OK...you want to hear Geoff turn it up a notch? Listen to him on Voiceplay's "Oogie Boogie's Song" (from "The Nightmare Before Christmas)...

@OperaSinger: You keep referring to the effortless quality of his voice, which reminds me of this simple observation by Danish polymath Piet Hein... "There is one art, No more, no less, It is the art of Artlessness." The ancient Greeks described this as Art of such quality that one was unable to figure out how it was done. Whether it's done in painting, or sculpture, or (in this case) singing, it's so impressive to experience such craftsmanship.
