I live on the island of Kauai. It’s been along time since it was probably similar to a place like this. In someways you have to admire people who can live simplistically. I think you’re brave for immersing yourself with these men. And yes they are real men. They are hearty and strong. These "unfortunate" people are a houndred times happier than the average american. I could bet money on that. They probably don't ever even want to go to USA. Why would they want to go somewhere where people jump off buildings as the only way to end their suffering in a society that "gives all"?
