A brief history of the Dark Knight's relationship with guns.
Subscribe for more deep dives into Batman lore, each mini-documentary video focusing on a specific topic, storyline or character from the Dark Knight’s rich history.
More on Batman and Guns...
Chris Sims at Comics Alliance (comicsalliance.com/batman-guns...) and Vaneta Rogers at Newsarama (www.newsarama.com/26211-the-h...) have written great aricles on the subject, and the Silver Age Comics blog (sacomics.blogspot.ca/2005/08/b...) entry for Batman and Guns in an excellent resource for anyone interested. Research for this episode also came from Batman: A Complete History by Les Daniels, Batman: A Visual History by Mattew K Manning and the little book of Batman by Paul levitz.
On Zack Snyder...
I take a few shots at Mr. Snyder in this video, including having him voiced by a 9 year old. My opinion of his filmmaking decisions should never be construed as ill will however, especially in light of recent tragic family events. I wish all the best to Mr. Snyder and his family during this difficult time.
Next time on BatFacts... I look at Tim Burton's 1989 Batman.
Batman and related characters are copyright DC Comics/Warner Brothers.

I wish DC would recanonize Year Two. They could throw all the Golden Age stories where Batman carried a gun into that year!

Batman’s no kill rule was something that was a topic of conflict since Bill Finger & Bob Kane. Bill Finger wanted an honorable hero who had a code and didn’t kill, Bob Kane wanted a masked avenger who mass murdered criminals because he is The Dark Knight. Which one do you think The Comics Code agreed to? There are multiple versions of Batman, some of them don’t kill some of them do kill, some of them pick and choose when they kill and considering The many DC Multiverses within The Omniverse this was bound to happen. The iconic popular version is the one who doesn’t kill by Bill F. You have issues of comics where he never kills and announces that he doesn’t kill, they’re are issues where he won’t kill but let’s people die, and they’re are comics where he does kill or picks and chooses who he kills. Do you know how many infinite alternate timelines they’re are in a single universe? & considering how many times Batman will do what he can to save everyone including villains and kill villains or let them die in other issues? It shows how DC’s continuity is often very varied. There are many versions of this character including many versions of DC’s characters its just that since the popular iconic versions of the characters are the ones who are the most heroic people often look at those more then every other version. The Iconic Version Of Batman, The Bill Finger version that we all know and love is the one that doesn’t kill and doesn’t use Guns, he is an honorable hero who stands by a code.

@@BatFacts - you're welcome, after I subbed I checked out a couple more. I found your vid doing a little research for my own channel; I cover comics too, but also video games and movies, and starting to focus more on long-form historical docs. I'd love to collaborate if you're ever interested.

Excellent research! Glad you made that Shadow connection. I'm a bit of a Snyder apologist, I'm one of those sad people who enjoyed the chances he took and the films he makes.But you are one of the few who challenged something Zack said and properly backed it up. Subscribed! Bring it on.

Thank you, sir! Great to hear from you. I have a certain appreciation for Zack, and realize that not all of the problems I had with BvS necessarily fall on his shoulders, but if you're going to evoke the Dark Knight Returns, do it right, I say.

+Bat Facts It was Watchmen all over again. That film should havre come out around now as "Superhero Fatigue" is setting in. Watchmen deconstructed the genre and produced something fresh in the comic. Watchmen came out just as filmmakers were figuring out how to translate the comic source material to film properly. It would have gone over like Deadpool if it were released now. The same goes for adapting The Dark Knight Returns. That story is Batman at the omega of his journey. Shoehorning it into the genesis of World's Finest and Justice League was folly. Studio pressure was to blame for demanding the DC answer to The Avengers be fast tracked. But Zack has to take the hit for borrowing elements from DNR to tell the tale. (I really think writer David Goyer is the real problem here and Zack takes all the hits because people love to hate him) That being the case, I do feel there are some great aspects to this murderous version of Batman depicted. TBC...

+Bat Facts I think people overlook the points Alfred makes about Bruce and his cruel state of mind. BvS shows Batman as a hero who has lost his way and given up. He has crossed the line and needs to fight tooth and nail to return to the light. There's off screen trauma with Robin and onscreen issues with Superman that explain our hero's actions, but are discarded by critics who demand this be The Batman they know and love. That's just not the story being told folks! Just like in Man of Steel, we don't get to see that guy till the end of the film. The movie was a redemptive path for Bruce to walk. When he doesn't brand Lex at the end, we finally get back "our" Batman. I'll take something interesting like that over the same old shit any day of the week. Not saying the film has no issues. But the hate it gets is unfair. That's my take.

You make an excellent point re: Watchmen. It would have been received differently now for sure, like Deadpool or Logan. I don’t think it necessarily should have been made into a movie mind you, but that’s the world we live in and Snyder did the best he could. I’ve been fantasizing ever since it came out about pulling BvS into Final Cut and editing my own version, because I’m convinced that most of the elements of a good movie are there. I dig a lost Batman clawing his way to redemption, it was the best part of the movie, but I thought his turning point moment was silly. Shoehorning DKR elements was definitely a mistake - not only for that film, but now going forward as their newly assembled Justice League has an old Batman. They should have saved it and just done a DKR adaptation starring Michael Keaton. Maybe on that Elseworlds banner they’ve been talking about for the Phillips/Scorsese Joker film. One can dream...

I think batman should have a gun, just only use it in dire senarios, it's okay to tote pacifism when it's low level criminals and it's possible to take them in without anyone getting hurt, but if batman had a gun he could of stopped joker when he joined isis or when he nuked metropolis and many lives could of been saved; in many instances it would of been a legal use of a firearm, if you see an active shooter mowing down citizens or a clown about to detonate a nuke it is completely legal to use a firearm to stop them especially since the fundamental flaw of the dc universe is that no criminal ever faces the death penalty when they stand trail no matter how bad the crime(a lot of people say joker gets away with the insanity plea but he does not qualify for that because of his terroristic actions and because he knows right from wrong) so in a world where the bad guys will keep commiting mass genocides over and over any reasonable man would carry a gun
@BatFacts
@BatFacts 2 года назад
Hey, thanks for your comment. I don’t think Batman carrying a gun would make him any more dangerous a combatant than he already is. He routinely faces off against multiple armed foes, and even world class marksmen like Deadshot or Deathstroke and comes out on top. From a combat perspective, he doesn’t need one. (“This is the weapon of the enemy. We do not need it. We will not use it.”) I also don’t think Batman not having a gun is what’s stopping him from killing the Joker, because Batman could kill the joker any number of ways. It’s not that he doesn’t kill Joker because he doesn’t carry a gun or is legally unable (a lot of the things Batman does are illegal)- he’s morally unwilling to kill the Joker. As for Joker nuking Metropolis, that was part of the plot of the Injustice video game, which operates in it’s own universe, and deviates heavily from DC canon (but I still don’t see how Batman with a gun would have stopped that). Can you provide more info about the Joker joining Isis? I’ve never heard of that story and Google is coming up short. As for DC’s “fundamental flaw” of not giving their villains the death penalty- think of all the great stories we would miss out on if every villain died after their initial defeat. It’s comics; There needs to be at least a hint that these compelling antagonists may return. Thanks for watching!

@@BatFacts Joker didn’t technically join isis but worked along side them to get his hands on deadly armaments, because joker totes a gun in many instances you would have probable cause to use a firearm, the reason I said he could stop a nuke with a gun is because he wasn’t fast enough to punch or throw a batarang at joker to stop him(a bullet moves much faster), interesting stories could still be made in dc, not every character qualifies for the death sentence, I do not think having criminals face the death sentence would hurt the story but instead make it better, the original intent of the Batman comics was to have new crimes and new villains weekly but the publisher brought back a villain and changed that without asking, the reason I called it a fundamental flaw was because the death sentence being absent is the one of the main reasons why most people have a problem with batman in the dc universe his own son hates him for awhile because joker just keeps on breaking out and committing acts of terrorism, it would be one thing if the ever addressed why joker can’t get the death sentence but they never do, people in dc just blame it on batman even though it isn’t his job, a gun could also come in handy for many situations where hand to hand combat and a batarang wouldn’t, if an old lady were getting robbed and she was resisting against the robber and the robber started to pull out a gun, a batarang realistically would be too slow and if the robber had a tight grip on the gun he would shoot her any way but one good shot could end the situation with the victim safe, if joker pulls out a tommy gun in the middle of a dining hall a bullet will reach him much faster than a batarang, if 1000 criminals from Arkham asylum escape and are murdering and raping people in the street on mass, it would be faster to neutralize them(which doesn’t always mean kill) with a gun then to try to fight them all with your fists, Batman doesn’t have super speed and hand to hand combat can often escalate situations that a gun would negate and vice versa; also you don’t always need to kill with a gun especially in comics, I’d imagine Batman’s gun toting to be more cowboy style like shooting a knife out of someone’s hand or shooting them in the leg, he doesn’t have to play executioner but a gun would come in handy, like if the joker was about to push someone into acid and Batman’s far away they don’t have to die because Batman’s batarang is too slow; not all villains need to get the death sentence or would realistically but the joker definitely would
