Welcome back to BatFacts!
This episode, The Robins continues, as I talk about the polarizing tale of the second Robin, Jason Todd. His multiple lives, and iconic death.
As always, I've pulled from many sources for this video, from source material to websites to books, but an especially good source was Joe Grunenwald's oral history of Jason Todd, found here: www.comicsbeat...
Also, wait until the end for a special tribute to the late, great Denny O'Neil.
What did I miss? What are YOUR favourite Jason Todd as Robin story?
Who's your favourite Robin?
If you liked the video, please consider giving it a like, or sharing it with a friend or group who like Batman. I post these on Reddit under r/Batman (the mods on r/DCcomics are big stupid dummies) on the day of their release, and a simple up-vote is another great, free way to support.
I’m on Instagram as “BatFactsVideos”, follow me for periodic episode updates and regular Batman news.
Hit the subscribe button for more deep dives into Batman lore, each video essay focusing on a specific topic, storyline or character from the Dark Knight’s rich history.
…and make sure to tune in for our next episode, where I'm talking about 2003's epic "Hush" storyline.

Jason's death was the best thing to happen to him. The writers didn't care for him as Robin and it showed, he was never going to go anywhere as that character. Coming back as an aged Redhood has made him a fan favorite (since at least N52) that I don't think would've happened if he never died.

I tend to agree, and although I respect Denny O’Neil and his commitment to having the death have real consequences, it was exciting to see him come back into the fold (although it sort of seemed like they didn’t know what to do with him at first). But I think the 17 year absence made his return all the more exciting. Thanks for watching!

I like him a lot too. Red Hood has been a little all over the place, but he’s great when written well. Thanks for watching!

Matt, your depth of knowledge continues to astound. Truly. Do you know it took to this episode for me to finally grasp that Robin has all these other names and personas because "Robin" is a cover ie stage ie pen name just like "Batman" is? I like the Jason Todd as the smoking, tire stealing street child. I like this kid. Better than "Holy cats".. "Batman and Domino"? That one is too aww shucks Midwest who seemed a bit fussy. Okay, Calendar Man has to be the lamest idea ever. Mr Freeze, and Nocturna though, are both awesome concepts. That, I assume 70's b&w pic of Denny O'Neil is just so far out. "DC historian" - you should send him a link to your vids! Never heard of Poison Idea, but it sounds like 80s Hardcore. I had no idea people would have voted on whether or not to kill a major original character. That does seem rather momentous. And the notion that an early computer nerd dude supposed lawyer in bad glasses maybe fudged the whole thing on his own is just ... Yes, back in ancient times when we had to hand write letters, find an envelope AND A STAMP, and physically tuck it into a mailbox! No one would believe this today. Filipe Garzones of "Bogatago" - love it. So that is where Killing Joke the band comes from! Having not read these comics ... why DID the audience so dislike Jason Todd, to the point of wanting him killed off? So Joke loves that Crowbar. I am old enough to remember the Larry the Lobster thing. No one realizes or remembers that SNL was unbearably unfunny at the time. So I have to wonder if people were annoyed with them doing a Larry the Lobster over Robin, since it was so clearly inspired by it. Oh god, that they created alternate panels, depending. Well I think it's interesting that it was apparently split nearly 50/50. Hardly a landslide. I love the b&w shot at 12:07 of the kid with the comic. Is that real old or fake old? Jesus Christ, 16:13 - poor Batman. The Rock City Games thing at 14:12 - honestly, who wants to see something like this depicted? It's too freaking realistic, and actually happens in the real world. Ugh. And so he becomes the Red hood? Dang. How anybody keeps up with this is like wow. Okay, well thanks for the ride, Matt. It's always so excellently meticulously done. Fascinating shit. Great job.

Indeed, Jason Todd was the second person to be Robin (there will be 3 more episodes to discuss the rest of them), and the badass, tire-stealing Jason Todd was definitely an improvement. Poison Idea were totally 80s hardcore! I’m not sure if it was the writer or artist that snuck that poster into his room in that panel, but I liked them being used as an example of something a “tough” kid would enjoy. Haha, I may do an episode on Calendar Man one day! He’s more interesting than he lets on, I assure you. This series, in many ways, is me gunning for Benjamin LeClair’s job. I mean “DC Historian”, what a job title! I think ultimately fans didn’t like Jason because he was different from the previous Robin, but not in any way that really counted, and once they gave him a little more personality, he was a lot less likeable. The call-in stunt had never been done before or since, but is a fun piece of comic history. I distinctly remember hearing about it when I first started reading Batman in the late 80s. “There’s a story where Robin DIES!”. My interest was piqued, and I think the same morbid curiosity that interested me in the story, was what drove readers to dial the “not survive” number. Thanks as always for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.

Nicely done! I never knew details about Jason Todd. I wasn't reading Bats at the time. This filled in the gaps for me nicely. I did read Frank Miller's epic and had no idea it planted the seeds for the boy wonder's demise. Here's a question. Was Sam Hamm's original script for Keaton's turn as Batman an influence on the tire-jacking Robin origin? I've always heard Damon Wayans was supposed to be Robin in both of the Tim Burton features and it involved him being a mechanic or something to do with messing with the Batmobile. And possibly more importantly.... What happened to Larry the Lobster?!! I MUST KNOW NOW! To the Googles! Keep up the great work my man!

Great question! It’s actually a pretty crazy story… The only actor that I’m aware of getting an actual offer to play Robin in the 1989 film was Keifer Sutherland, but he turned it down and, as we know, Tim Burton ended up going in a Robin-less direction in the end. For the sequel, Batman Returns, however Damon Wayan’s brother Marlon was actually cast as Robin, and paid $100,000 for it. Evidently they decided to cut Robin out of that film later into pre-production, and as a result, Marlon apparently still gets residuals for his part in a movie he had no part in. He would have been introduced in a proposed third Burton Batman film, but when Batman Returns was too dark, McDonalds kicked up a fuss that they couldn’t sell happy meals based on Tim Burton’s vision of the character, Burton and WB parted ways, Burton was replaced with Joel Shumacher (RIP) to make a more happymeal friendly film (Batman Forever), and Marlon Wayans was eventually replaced with Chris O’Donnell. As for the mechanic bit, I’m not sure if that is how Marlon’s Robin would have been introduced, but it did make me think of a Batman film that Frank Miller and Darren Aronofsky were developing as a potential reboot after “Batman and Robin”, before it eventually went to Christopher Nolan. It revolved around an orphaned Bruce and his friendship with an older, black muscle car mechanic named “Al” (a reimagining of butler Alfred Pennyworth). Thanks as always for watching, Chris!
