Lez gooooooooo I was born in 2003 I’ll never have to worry about being older than the man who basically raised me!!! He’ll be half way 200 by the time I’m already dead.
Yay! It's back! More great stuff. I never finished DK2, skipped Holy Terror, and haven't looked at DK3. Now I'm curious to check out that covers collection. Thanks for the always entertaining viewpoints and lively observations. I dig your style kiddo!
Thank you as always for the kind words. It means a lot that you take the time to watch and comment. The Master Race covers book is pretty amazing, especially if you're a Dark Knight Returns fan. I think 1 artist (Frank Quitely) did a cover with DK2 stuff, other than that it was all DKR tributes. I go back and flip through it way more than the series itself.
You might! 😅 I enjoyed all the variant covers and the general nostalgia for the original that happened as DKIII was being released, but the story itself didn’t really do much for me.
Here you manage once again to make fascinating and interesting a subject of which I otherwise have no knowledge nor interest. Seriously - now when I walk by a comic shop or see an image of this guy someplace, I will think, hmm, I wonder what era/interpretation that reflects? I want to ask why Miller turned him from smiling friendly ripped guy to uber buff grimacing/menacing, but perhaps it was needing that. The bit at 5:37 about the drawings being under-rendered and garish - does appear even to my untrained eye to be the case. It just looks cheap. Wondering what the reason was that he didn't release another comic for 5 yrs following Holy Terror. Mega blowback? Also wonder if he's explained himself at any point since. That phrase "patriotic propaganda" is nauseating, not the least reason being that we are living it every day down here. Okay: "Remember berries"?? The first issue of the 30th anniversary thing had more than 70 covers?!? I confess that having grown up with the biff/bang/pow kitsch, I do love it. The brief ending shot of/tribute to Anthony Bourdain made me sniffle ... Thanks again for your many hours of hard work, Matt. You're a card.
Thanks for taking the time to watch! For me, that's a big part of the appeal; arguably more than any other character in fiction, there are SO MANY different eras and interpretations, from very dark and violent to extremely charming and light hearted, and they all have their place. Miller said something recently about Holy Terror like "I don't have that in me anymore", and the book being much more angry than he is now. Whether that was as a result of the near-universal panning it got, who knows. And yes, the first issue of Dark Knight Master Race had something like 70 different covers. Retailers could arrange to have covers that were exclusive to their shop, so it was next to impossible for someone to get all of them. But then it was collected into a book. It looks like their gearing up to do it again for the Batman/Catwoman wedding next month, which I've seen at least a dozen different covers to at this point. Thanks again!
Well thanks for doing all the exhaustive research and hard work. Yes, I have to say it's cool that there are so many takes on this guy, and over so many decades, but I'm guessing that is what has kept him/the genre alive, maybe? Because it's not one dimensional/b&w - it/he and its/his audience are cool with it being fluid. I feel a bit bad for the folks who rushed around trying to buy up all the Master Race issues, only to have it all put into a book, ultimately (though the ones tied to a particular shop - what a cool idea!) That was like when Pearl Jam fans were taping their shows back in the day, and then the band decided to put out individual CDs for a while, of all of their live shows, right away. It was cool to have good quality copies of live shows, but it took away the "thrill of the chase" I'm sure for some people. Okay, I can't believe Batman made me think of Pearl Jam, but oh well. Anyway, keep up the good work, kid. You're kicking butt.
