What we would do is at night when putting all the donuts in the garbage bags we would somehow mark the black bags with the donuts in them and not mark the ones with actual trash in them so technically we wouldn't get fired cause we're doing out Jon by putting the donuts in garbage bags and putting the bags out but the homeless just "decided" to get into the bags lol it worked 100% and every night nothing went to waste thanks to me and my co workers doing that , the homeless would wait for Me and my co workers to lock up and walk away at closing then they would cross the street and take the marked donut bags , win win for everyone

I dumpster dive and I can tell you it’s not usually because of a recall that something gets tossed. Most produce I find is packaged-bags of apples, oranges, peppers, onions, or potatoes or cartons of strawberries etc. usually you will find one or two in the bag that has gone bad so the store throws out the entire bag. Ppl get sick from food they pay for at restaurants and grocery stores all the time. Also they are made to throw away perfectly good food for various reasons, many foods are good for a long time after their lable dates but legally have to be pulled off shelves as soon as it passes that date. In many things like canned foods those dates are just there so that ppl will have to buy more, I have eaten cans of food that were 20 years past their use by date...and the only issue was that the taste wasn't so great after that long. You be surprised how hard it is to donate food. I've tried on several occasions. Fresh watermelons, cases of ice cream, grapes, etc... straight off a delivery truck. The reciever states overage, misloaded merchandise, etc... Then the originator won't pay to have it hauled back. Only once has the food bank taken anything. Thankfully I was able to help find places & individuals to give this good quality food too. Otherwise it would've been thrown in the trash! The ice cream incident took 20 runs in my car loaded front to back, floor to ceiling, including the trunk. To find homes for it all. I had to eat the cost of the gas to deliver it. @@onecuet Stores could at least put it out at their store or outside with a sign that says "free" or sell it at a discount. Something, but many of them won't even try. If they're worry it'll hurt business, people already risk themselves getting old products. There'll always be people who want and pay fresh products. People finding out about this will make them disgusted at businesses, boycott them, or push for higher regulation on them. Aren't stores losing money by not just selling them at a discount? I also think people and business owners should be moral, and not just greedy for their business so much. You say the gas is costly but why are businesses able to transfer their products to discount stores like Ross, to landfills, or able to outsource their labor and ship products around the world so much? Just ran across this video. Regarding throwing away food, when I worked at Starbucks we would give away our food that was expiring that night to customers so we didn't have to throw it away. One day someone threatened to sue us because he said they got sick from a pastry that they took. They made a huge deal about it. After that we were no longer allowed to give away the food that was expiring. We would donate stuff, but the shelters would not always come in to pick up our donations so again it would get thrown away. I worked at a pub for awhile and it was _common_ for people to just eat the meat and barely touch the vegetables. Buying the two things separately would have totally helped cut back on food waste. When it comes to the cold food, just because it feels "cold" does not mean that it is still safe to eat. Frozen and refrigerated foods need to be below a specific temperature to be safe to eat. From my experience working at a convenience store, sometimes problems arise where an entire stock of frozen/refrigerated product must be thrown out due to it falling below the safe temperature. (Ex: if the power goes out and the fridges/coolers stop working) Dumpster diving doesn't bother me, there's alot that goes to waste that could be used or donated. But when it comes to cold/frozen foods, please do not give that to other people. You have no idea if that is truly safe to eat or not. Unless these divers are bringing a thermometer with them to guarantee that the "still cold/frozen" food is actually cold/frozen.
@Amarianee
@Amarianee 2 года назад
Can confirm as well. When I worked at CVS, we had our freezers fail overnight twice and had to toss all of the frozen foods in them the next morning. It was upsetting, but it has to be done because it's not safe to eat at that point. It's inevitably going to still be cold, as long as the freezer wasn't opened, but that doesn't make it safe to eat.
@seaofgeese
@seaofgeese 2 года назад
@Amarianee my store had a similar issue a few months back; luckily, it occurred during store hours where we had enough employees to help. Our store has these metal covers that enclose any open coolers (any cold food display without a door), so we rushed to put those out. Luckily there was a few coolers/freezers still working, so when we ran out of the metal covers we filled shopping carts with frozen food and zoomed them to the nearest working cooler until everything was full. It was crazy how a good portion of the frozen/cooler section of the store just quit working. Luckily, we were able to get someone to come fix the issue before any food went bad. But this is just one of many examples that lead to a huge loss of perfectly good food :( Sometimes, our equipment just fails. Dont dumpsterdive for frozen/cooled items kids

Most products people pull are not only still in airtight sealed packaging, but they’re then but in a sealed trash bag. The food itself doesn’t come into contact with the inside of the dumpster. As long as you spray the bag with disinfectant before opening it, it’s fine. Also, food poisoning can happen anywhere. I’ve gotten food poisoning from going out to eat at restaurants multiple times. Also cooking food mostly kills any kind of bacteria, no matter where you get it from. If you think dumpsters are breeding grounds for bacteria, you should see slaughter houses and meat packing plants. Really gross stuff.

AND lol aside from the fact you are willingly eating food that shares space with human feces and the like, you have no idea if that 'sealed' candybar (or whatever) is even safe to eat to begin with. If it was recalled usually the store is told to toss it out after documenting how many are being disposed (to be credited in replacement). While that is rare, it does happen.

I work in a pet store in Australia and this is not the practice here! If an animal is sick they isolated from the other animals, depending on the condition they may be sent to the vet or we can treat them in a staff only area. Even for fish we have a medicated tank. Because new fish are brought in from an outside supplier sometime they bring parasites or diseases with them so we treat the fish tanks often to keep them healthy. They're also broken up into several units so any contaminated water would not affect the whole supply. We once had some baby mice and over the following week we saw that two of them seemed to have a birth defect, so my colleague adopted them for himself and they are living happily with him. It's horrifying that there are places that treat living creatures as purely a means for money, thankfully there are also many places that do the right thing c:

What a lot of people don’t understand about giving food away at the end of the day is that a lot of places you can’t. I worked at dunkin and I asked the same question in 2018 about the donuts. It’s because if we go and donate these donuts and say someone gets sick, they can sue dunkin and other restaurants for giving them “bad food.” The donuts used to be donated but people ruined that for themselves when the started to sue these companies claiming the food was old and made them sick. All for money. I mean it makes sense. Why have one meal when you can sue and get a bunch of meals instead. But for reasons like that is why they no longer give away the donuts. My husband had the opposite experience at Whole Foods. They almost fired him for taking a prepacked dinner they were shrinking out at the end of the night. The only thing that “saved” his employment was one of the prepared foods workers finally admitted that she told him to take it because it was shrunk out and would be trashed. He was still told to never do it again.
@sunshi4929
@sunshi4929 Год назад
At mine we waste very little. Our ‘shrink’ is foods that are one-two days from expiring, (usually vegan meats that people don’t like the taste of), rotten fruits, and products with broken packaging. The one thing we need to waste less of is our fresh bread and prep foods. They throw it out quite a bit before expiry because they want “guaranteed freshness” just wish they pulled a Walmart and had a section of discounted foods about to expire. Other than that, it’s nothing like in this video.

I worked at CVS and we had to throw away carts full of candy and other items that weren’t even close to being expired. I asked my manager if he could donate it to my local church. He said, “it’s too much trouble.” Then he would lock the dumpsters. There was a lot of homeless people who would sleep in the back of the store too. When I quit I told my union rep everything he did, he was very lazy, and he was terminated. What upsets me the most is how they dump live animals. I foster kittens and found a momma and her one day old kittens dumped in an alley. I kept her, two of her babies and found loving homes for the others. We have to stop this. Dumpster divers are saving not only our planet but discarded animals. Thank you so much for having such a big heart.

You have no idea if that food was thrown away because they were ordered to throw it away by the manufacturer or if the freezer or refrigerator is kept in broke and the food is no longer safe to consume. And sadly, some demented customers do disgusting things to food items so that the store cannot sell it. And just because frozen food is still frozen in the dumpster, doesn't mean it was frozen the entire time before it was thrown away....

there are already clearance sections for a lot of grocery stores, the problem comes for them with the “sell by” date to which the food may not be expired, but they are now too close to the expiration date for them to sell it as the food may go bad on the shelves and now they are in legal trouble. as well as contaminated food cannot be sold, so it needs to be thrown out. contamination can take out a whole isle, especially frozen food since frozen food needs to be kept at a certain temperature for bacteria to not contaminate the frozen items. so when power goes out and the frozen foods fall below a certain temp, that food cannot be sold anymore

As someone who works at a fast-food place; specifically McDonald's, there are reasons why food can be thrown out. At McDonald's, we're told to throw food after a certain amount of time has passed to ensure every customer gets fresh food. Employees can make mistakes and when taking out a tray of donuts, muffins or cookies we can accidentally drop them and obviously must be thrown out. From what I've seen this next example doesn't happen too often, but when taking a bag of fries from its box to put in the fridge the bag can break easily sometimes. Why were that many donuts thrown out, couldn't tell you, maybe I'm too optimistic but there was likely a reason. Them locking their dumpsters would make total sense, but purposely ruining good materials, clothes and stuff doesn't make sense. If a dumpster diver gets sick it's entirely their fault, but don't go and purposely ruin the food or what else further than it may already have been.

my boyfriend worked at Panera, at the end of the night they would donate majority of the pastries to an old folks home and the truck would come and deliver it to them. the rest of the leftovers would be taken home by employees and then the last bits are thrown out for a replacement of fresh food/pastries. but that doesn’t account for the accidents made during the work day causing food that is now not able to be sold.
