You can go from either way- if you take the Goshogake Hot Springs trailhead and want to go straight to the wild hot springs and sulfur river area, take a right at the fork in the trail after the first few minutes.

About a year ago I made a video about this same location, but back then I didn't jump in the river or the hot spring, I just hiked right by it, so I wanted to make another video showing that aspect. Last year's video is here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ArDtpwdWo98.html (Also- I have been able to keep ahead of my weekly video schedule for quite a while now, so I have been giving my Patreon supporters about 24 hours advance access to these videos. I'm extremely grateful to everyone that supports me on Patreon! www.patreon.com/GoNorthJapan )

I’m not sure if anyone has mentioned it in the comments. But, when you do a 2 hr hike (or more) away from civilization and want to dip yourself in a hot spring, please don’t forget to hydrate, bring lots of food and water. If you do drink alcohol, please be careful on how much you consume as hot weather/hot spring water (if you take a dip) don’t mix very well. The heat from the water can impact your body’s ability to handle alcohol. Stay safe out there😃❤️ But wow, what a beautiful area!!! I hope to visit one day.

Nice bit of "6 million dollar man" editing at 4.50 XD As usual, a stunning video. Do you ever travel to any of these trails at night? or camped over night? Obviously it can be dangerous but I imagine you have done some of them often enough to do them with your eyes closed. I just wondered what the night skies look like, how many stars... thousands I imagine. Great work as usual, thanks.
@GoNorthJapan
@GoNorthJapan 3 года назад
I don't do that much hiking at night, though I have on a couple of occasions with a head lamp. The stars are indeed stunning and awe-inspiring up in the mountains with no light pollution to dim them. Up here I've only stayed in the "evacuation lodges - 避難小屋" as they are free, often empty, and offer protection from bears and some of them have little bathrooms, wood-burning stoves, and water sources nearby. In Japan I've only camped in actual camp sites, though I am thinking of camping on the coast later this year in a remote spot.

First a firm hike, a short dip in a hotspring, a beer and then cooling off in a river. That is living the life right there. The only downside I see is the walk back down if you get a bit drowsy from the hotspring.

Imagine hiking over 2 hours and you get there and the hot spring is already occupied. I don't do well with heat, including hot water, so I would just admire the landscape. And I couldn't help but start laughing when you were talking about the bear 💩 because earlier tonight I had watched Live Penguin TV and we always end up talking about penguin 💩 in the chat. It started with one of the rangers explaining how they collect and analyze it for research and now it's a running joke we have.

I have gone back over there recently, but I didn't film much. If I had more time and money I'd definitely do all of it. One of my work friends just completely the entire trail actually. (Not all in one go, he broke it up into many pieces and did it in a series of short trips.) I'll see if I can do another coastal video sometime soon!

@GoNorthJapan
@GoNorthJapan 3 года назад
Yes, that's right! I didn't actually know that was the name, since it's not written anywhere there, but on google maps that's how it's labeled! It was about 40 degrees one day, and closer to 43 on another day! Pretty hot!
@yaroslavatimoshenko252

That's an absolute dream of a spot! Akita Prefecture is really a treasure - as if I needed more reason to make a trip up there one day (my first and foremost will always be to see the Namahage)! I was able to enjoy wild hot springs just once, over 10 years ago during my first ever visit to Japan, on the road to Mount Haku. It was just off a rest stop, down a fairly steep valley and right next to the Tedori River in Ishikawa. Unfortunately, when I went back there as a JET, it had dried up and was pretty derelict. So happy to see that these gems still exist elsewhere! I suppose a question would be, if it wasn't safe to get in, would there be signs?
@GoNorthJapan
@GoNorthJapan 3 года назад
Yeah- there probably would be a sign since it's so close to the trail. The big dangerous sulfur lake has a sign saying don't approach, and other areas warn you to stay on the trail because of toxic gas vents, so I think there would have been a warning.

What a great experience! What’s at the bottom of the wild onsen pools? I would imagine volcanic rock can be sharp on bare skin.
@GoNorthJapan
@GoNorthJapan 3 года назад
There's actually sort of a hard clay-like bottom to the hot spring pool. You can dig it a bit deeper with the shovel that's there if you want. Rocks are around it but not on the bottom.

I was hiking with my friend Adam that day, who is in the bear/bat/cave video. He was holding the camera for that bit. (And you can see him very briefly when I am showing the sign eaten by bears.)

Once again, thanks for the video! My question is how do you know the water is safe to bathe in? Do you find out from the locals or are there signs nearby?
@GoNorthJapan
@GoNorthJapan 3 года назад
I wasn't sure the very first time I went here last year... but I saw a few traces that other people had bathed there so when I got back I google it on hiking apps, and found it is a known bathing spot- even on google maps! But yeah... no signs for it in this case.

Hmm...hot onsen during summer (and all the pesky mosquitoes) doesn't sound inviting. Would you say this would be an activity best for Autumn? I saw that mosquito buzzing around you during that volcanic river dip section, can't help feeling want swat that annoying thing.
@GoNorthJapan
@GoNorthJapan 3 года назад
By the river they were actually just gnats and little flies, no mosquitos. The mosquitoes were bad in the forest, but actually none that I noticed at the river/hot spring. Autumn might be nice too though!
@P.B...
@P.B... 3 года назад
Apart from the temperature, how do you tell if a wild hot spring is 'soakable' for humans? Can you just jump into any wild one? Are there ones where you have to leave your skin behind when you walk out of it? Also, what is that sound effect at 4:50? I've heard it in several 'animated-protagonist-notices-something-ominous/dodges-an-attack-in-slow-mo' situations.
@GoNorthJapan
@GoNorthJapan 3 года назад
I would only get in somewhere that is recognized as a place for bathing. They are labeled on trail maps and sometimes with simple signs so you know if it's safe. This one somehow doesn't have a sign, but on maps it is labeled, and it's right next to the trail, which is a good sign. There are definitely tons of dangerous volcanic areas around here where you shouldn't even approach the vents because of the density of toxic gases... Hahaha, that's from an old show called the 6 million dollar man.
