Lyrics One man rode the way through the woods Down to Asa bay Where dragon ships had sailed to sea More times than one could say To see with own eyes the wonder People told of from man to man The God of all almightyness Had arrived from a foreign land The rumors told of a man Who had come from the other side the seas Carrying gold cross around neck in chain And spoke in strange tongue of peace He had come with strange men in armor Dressed in purple shirts and lace Smelling not of beer but flowers And with no hair in face And the bold man carrying cross Had told all one of Asa bay The God of all man woman child had come To them all save And to thank Lord of Heaven One should build to God a house And to save one's soul from Hell One should be baptized and say vows A man of pride with the Hammer told new God To build his house on own And spoke loud of the Gods of their fathers Not too long time gone The rumors said the man with a beard like fire And the Hammer in chain By men in armor silenced was and by Their swords was slain Those who did not pay the one coin Of four to man of new God Whipped was twenty and put in chains then locked By their neck to the log (To the log) And so all of Asa bay did build A house of the cross Every hour of daylight they did sweat Limbs ached because faith does cost And on the day two hundred There it stood white to the sky The house of the God of the cross Big enough to take two dragon ships inside And all of Asa bay did watch The wonder raise to the sky Now must the God of the cross be pleased And satisfied Just outside the circle of the crowd One old man did stand He looked across the waters And blotted the sun out of his eyes with one hand And his old eyes could almost see The dragon ships set sail And his old ears could almost hear Men of great numbers call out Oden's hail And though he did know already Though he turned face towards sky And whispered silent words forgotten Spoken only way up high Now this house of a foreign God does stand Now must they leave us alone Still he heard from somewhere in the woods Old crow of wisdom say People of Asa land, it's only just begun
Today's the first time I listened to this and I have to say that it's one of the most unusual metal songs I have ever heard and will now on be one of my favorite songs of all time.
@@icankillbugs And before I had only heard black metal songs from Bathory and I was surprised that this song was made by them.. Also there are only a few other metal songs that have made me felt emotional, for example Windir - Journey to The End and Wintersun - Death and The Healing
Quorthon dedicated the song One Rode to Asa Bay, about the christianization of Scandinavia, to C. Dean Andersson, who had earlier sent some of his books to Quorthon. The village's name in the song, Asa Bay, comes from pseudonym Asa Drake which Andersson used in some of his books.
One of the biggest legends in metal. Pioneered not just one but two genres, and absolutely perfected viking metal. In spite of that, Bathory and Quorthon is unbelievably underrated and rarely mention in the same effect as other musicians in metal who's had much less of an impact because they were more commercial. R.I.P. master. I remember when you passed. It tore my little heart apart.
This song has so much history that is important to remember. It is also beautiful. I don't care what anyone says, no one could master these vocals like Quorthon. I'm sorry we lost him so early.
@@euronymous2487 I would always take a recommendation from you, Euronymous. I listened and liked. I also found metal versions of Lord of the Rings songs and the Emperor's Theme from Return of the Jedi. They paired well.
Maybe it's because the song is about the demise of the traditional Nordic, figuratively speaking, European culture and its replacement by the Abrahamic Plague, and our heathen souls simply feel it.

i remember when the first album was released, I read a review that said: "This is what it would sound like if a 747 landed in your living room". I rushed out and bought it as soon as I could.
Mind blowing to realize that Quorthon was only 23 years old when he singlehandidly created this epic masterpiece. One of the best songs ever. Quorthon, thank you and rest well in Valhalla. I salute you!
*-To be honest, after almost 20 years of his departure and generating that impact on Metal, hearing this Great Song still makes my hair stand on end because of the lyrics, the story and the that guitar solo that in my opinion is one of the most underrated, rest in peace master your legacy will persist forever.*
Man... Every time I hear this song, it makes tears come to my eyes... Damn... Quorthon was and continues to be one of the greatest Geniuses in Black Metal, and even in music... I'm Brazilian, and from here I send greetings to all Nordic brothers!!!
I am proud to know that there are people in this world who have a heightened sensitivity and truly live this music, and are truly engulfed by this music.@@LordArquimes
It's an immense honor for me to read your comment, this song really expresses an emotion in an inexplicable way, everything about it, Quorthon's voice, the drums being played in an overwhelming way, the guitars, the destroying double bass, the organ generating a feeling of Gregorian music, all of this combined with the lyrics of the song, which tells a story in a poetic way, makes us feel touched by it, by the message it emits... Still the video bringing all this to light... The clip was very well done, for me it's one of the best clips ever made, if not the best, which is totally in line with the lyrics of the song, man, that's amazing, it only took a genius to achieve that...And Quorthon, It was this genius... There are some idiots who criticize Black Metal, and in turn even Viking Metal, which has its roots in Black, but there is the answer for these people, that Black Metal is simply FORMIDABLE. I'm sorry that my words were long, I'm also immensely honored to know that you are also the person who has such sensitivity emitted by this song, rest assured, there are more people like us, and that also makes me immensely grateful!!! Hail my Brother!!!
@@LordArquimes Everything is fine, and for me it is a real honor to read your comment and to think that there are people who have such an increased sensitivity, hail my brother!
i have never heard a musician who has achieved so much with little. i mean - the guitars are cheap, the bass is cheap, the drumcomputer is cheap and he only hits sometimes the right tone with his vocals. but... all together his work, not only this song, is unique! this guy was a genius! RIP Quorthon, i love you...
Masterpiece...🤘🏻💪🏻 First wave of Black Metal, inventor of Viking Metal... Hail Quorthorn, Hail Bathory 👊🏻 I still have goosebumps everytime I listen to that great song. I may be old now. But I still know about the best Musik 😁 High up the horns 🤘🏻
who did you donate to? maybe his father? who runs this channel? is it just an automatically generated channel? Edit: His father, Boss, who was also his producer and i think made the In Memory Of Quorthon albums died in 2017. So it's not him.
@@thephoenixking3242 Hello from Czech, Look, find out, Qurthon's memory must be kept alive, it's part of getting to know Thomas better - and I'm forever in his debt, his music and words saved my life so many times when I was really bad and lying in the hospital hooked up to machines and I had a tube in my throat and the machines were breathing for me, this is the way to Asa Bay. Rushing into battle every day, with Bathory's music at full volume !
together with evil Chuck schuldiner they are the biggest legends and true geniuses that died way too young they will never be forgotten hail too quorthon and Chuck schuldiner
@@AFXSnares why is that they are both true legends and geniuses in there own right that's what i ment in my reaction so i still don't see why that's disrespectful comparing Chuck whit quorthon they are both true and legendary musicians it don't have any thing to do with disrespect i respect both geniuses equally they made both great music and death and bathory together with hellhammer are my most favorite bands in the world
@Cultöerectus Schuldiner is a German-Jewish name. Obviously. As if Chuck's religious background even mattered. There are a ton of Jews in hard rock and metal bands including Rush, Anvil, Kiss, Van Halen, Manowar, Testament, Aerosmith, Warlord, Type O Negative, Anthrax, Nuclear Assault, Megadeth, Dream Theater, Blue Oyster Cult, Disturbed, Killswitch Engage, The Dillinger Escape Plan, etc..
One of the best clips ever and a song first time listened in 14 years and still love it ... I want would go to Asa bay right away .... Hail Quorthon in Valhalla, we will carry on your legacy. R.I.P. Your music is timeless, the BEST!
@@pavlolakhmanyuk7920 Yes, its true, never let the stop us, government, ...anything, anybody.......we will fight on ! Hi from Czech , wish you luck and fingers cross for You !
The trails of tears began for all the celts.the árab AND the african Man came To our lands searching hospitality we welcomed them as brothers knowing nothing of their Malice
Thanks so much for this well deserved Bathory channel. To me Bathory isn't just "metal", it's great spiritual inspiration as well. Quorthon not only inspired legions of musicians, he also inspired those who were able to read between the lines regarding a way of life and an intriguing philosophy.
Listening to this in my conservatory. Radiator's on. Mild Winter in the heart of England. I dream of snow. I have seen it, have even touched it. But was many years ago when i was in the Continental heathen lands. :) My brother bought a couple of Bathory records in the 90's. One Rode To Asa Bay was most played.
