Today Jay and I are working on the bathroom drywall in the downstairs bathroom! Then I wanted to share with you about my vanity plans and scout out the perfect wood slab for my bathroom vanity. My total house renovation is coming together!!
Hey there! My name is Abby and I recently bought a MAJOR fixer upper house. I am SO excited to work on fixing it up this old house and turning it into my dream home. I can't wait to take you on this journey with me! I am planning to DIY as much as I can and learn so much about home renovations along the way. I am starting out totally clueless so I am sure it will be a grand adventure! I recommended the same thing. Drywall is a hard thing to do. And if not done properly it will show up after you paint or a few years down the road when your seams start to crack.

i like the slab of wood for the counter top, it will look pretty. Suggestion - I would not install the counter, then sheet rock, seems backwards. The sheet rock should be installed 1st. If you ever needed to replace or repair the counter top, you'd have to rip out walls to get to it; tons of work.

That way you can completely dry wall bathroom. And in future you may change vanity style. You will only have a few screw holes to patch.

Hey, ab. Did I miss something? Did you already hook up your plumbing and? In pressure test it with water before you close it all in with the drywall.

When you are all done it would be fun for you to sit down one on one with Jay and get his thoughts from start to finish from day 1. It has been quite an experience for you. Jay has taught you a lot of good skills. Sheet rock is not my most favorite thing to do. I commend you for sticking it out.

I would take the blocking for vanity off and drywall , tape ,then install blocking and vanity top.

Jay You are Amazing you and Abby have done an amazing job with this complete house remodel You have surprised me at every avenue of this remodel. You have taught Abby the skills and encouraged her at every turn You are both amazing truly you are. You have rock this in every aspect of this job i am glad you are nearing completion and you can both sit back and reap the rewards of your labour of love the fixer up old farm house with a view of a stone wall and a lovely creek. The finishing touches is just around the corner now and things will go faster towards the end.

Make sure all your joints are butt up tight. If your short and depend on having the tape and mud to cover it up. Later after it’s all done and living in it. You might get cracks. All that hard work and money down the drain.

If you have the money I would add tile over the waterproof in the bathroom. Maby add tile behind the stove on the wall where the kitchen sink is and the stove. It is just a thought. Your doing great.

Abby, assuming ( I know what they say about that) Tamarac is a hard wood. Stain typically will differ on oak versus pine. Oak being a hard wood, while pine is a soft wood.

Larch . The only evergreen to lose all it's needles every Fall .Tamarac a common name .😊😊😊 So therefor a softwood .😊

You remind me of myself. I learn from watching and doing. I have remodeled 7 homes and one large ballroom at a country club in my lifetime and done lots of minor home changes. I have done drywalling and texturing, painting, building walls, plumbing work, electrical work, and design work. All pretty much by trial and error and watching experts and novice workers. It is very satisfying and tiring too. Good work between you and Jay. Your home will always be a love of your life. By the way I am a 67 year old woman and my daughter and i did her baby room in 2022. So i am still able to do smaller jobs.

The house is really pulling together now. Jay is so nice and that was a very nice compliment he gave you. I think installing drywall is your favorite. Based on your decor taste and your being in the midst of a renovation…I recently discovered Three Birds Renovations in Australia. House # 15 was renovated with Mediterranean homes in mind and House #16 is a renovation of a modern farmhouse. They did a similar roof to yours and the exterior cladding was installed vertically instead of horizontal. You may like to check out their videos.

Abby May I suggest when doing floors look into luxury vinyl sheeting. It’s all one piece like the old fashioned linoleum but so much better. Mine looks just like hardwood floors and is even textured. You cannot tell it isn’t hardwood. Easy maintenance and just gorgeous people are amazed when I tell them it isn’t real wood. It doesn’t have the “ slick” appearance and is just the best.

Your home is really taking shape now and it's amazing how not long ago you hadn't even built that bathroom or laundry area. I always look forward to your next video. I was confused as to why there was a pony wall between the vanity and toilet. But now that I know your vision, it makes sense. Two different wood species will mostly likely stain differently. Pine is a soft wood so it absorbs the stain unevenly. I’m not sure about tamarack. Definitely try a sample first. You might need to adjust the stain or possibly use a gel stain instead.

It seems to me that the picture you showed of the vanity is just a top board and one shelf. The walls need to be finished with drywall before you install those boards.
