Batman 89 still kicks ass style wise. The bombastic music, the art deco feel, the noir style lighting, the sleek batmoblie, just all of it still holds up.

It's not a mistake that Batman's cables show when he's flying into and out of scenes. We're supposed to see that he isn't supernatural and that he is using theatrical gadgets from his famous utility belt.

Jack Nicholson on the Making of DVD: There really wasn't any deep acting of the Joker's character. I knew from the comics what Tim wanted and it was pretty much my sense of humor. I just went into Batman with the mindset of scaring kids and creeping people out. I could do anything I wanted with the character. The more you scare kids, the more they love it. The Joker is a guy who had something happen to him that allowed him to express his evil ways in a more creative manner.

Tim Burton intended for us to occasionally see the rig Batman used to "fly." Otherwise he wouldn't have shown it. 🙂 The part where one shot from Joker's freakish pistol downs the Batwing is just another example of Burton's ironic sense of humor.

Seriously though, justice for Bob! One of the best henchmen ever, he deserved better 😭

It’s really interesting to see people watch this movie without having seen the 1966 Batman movie, which completely shaped people’s perceptions of superhero movies for several generations (despite the success of Donner’s Superman). Burton’s film seemed really dark compared to previous portrayals. I would love to see what you make of the sixties Batman.

34:34 This movie came out when I was in college. One girl wrote an op-ed in the school paper that Bruce Wayne had his priorities in order when he said "I want to, but right now I have to go to work." That the safety of a city superseded all other concerns. That checked all of the girl's boxes. I found it an interesting thing for her to say as she later got dumped on by a lot of girls for taking that stance.

I think it's one of the better Batman movies. Batman actually investigates and demonstrates his scientific prowess along with his ability to kick ass. And, in my opinion, Jack Nicholson is the best live-action Joker, period. He brings a wonderful balance of mania, humor, and homicide to the character. Where Heath Ledger's Joker is a serious terrorist threat, and his unpredictability makes him even more threatening, he lacks the zany sense of humor that makes the Joker more than just another terrorist or criminal. YMMV, of course.

I watched this movie as a kid and it blew my mind. During carnival (here in Italy is like Halloween, everybody dressed up) my grandmother sew a great pink joker dress for me. It's a nice memory of her.

I do think Jack Nicholson's Joker is the best, Heath Ledger's Joker was far to calculated and thought out, he was missing the characters psychotic spontaneity. Ledgers Joker wanted to test peoples morality, Nicholson's Joker had no morality and truly wanted to watch the world burn.

In the young Bruce scene, Tim Burton wanted to get Adam West to play Thomas Wayne but he couldn’t get him. However Adam West does make an appearance in the Batman animated series as The Grey Ghost, a mentor of Batman’s.

When this came out at the time, it was dark and scary. It was the only big superhero movie other than Superman in '78. The only reference people had if they didn't read comics was the campy 60s TV show, and some campiness still comes through when you see it nowadays. For me as a kid, it was different, scary, and Batman was for the first time a badass, and the Joker was terrifying and insane cos he actually killed people! It was until years later, with help from the Internet, that people were pissed off the Joker origins and being the one who killed the Waynes, and even more were angry about Michael Keaton being cast. Again, we only had the 60s show. Also HD resolution, as good as it is for quality, exposes some movies when it comes to special and practical effects and early CGI. A lot of "younger" people now forget HD didn't exist when we all saw this. lol Gotham really was a character of its own, kind of like Batman Begins. (Which was mostly filmed in studio built sets, TDK & TDKR weren't really.) For me, this movie was really a part my childhood growing up and it inspired the animated series, future comics, and future movies too, comic related and non-comic related. 😁

No, opening credits is NOT “a thing of the 80’s.” It’s been a thing since pretty much the beginning of cinematic history. Just watch the Wizard of Oz, Sound of Music, any classic Disney movie, etc. So many examples. It’s always been a thing. It wasn’t until the last several years that movies stopped doing it, so what you’re now used to is a relatively new thing.

Tim Burton himself actually said he prefers Batman Returns over this one. He felt this one was a bit dull and boring at times and not really what he truly wanted for his Batman movie. (He and his wife even wrote a treatment in 1985 that's very different yet has similarities to Returns like Joker being the Mayor, and set in the winter. And a scarier sounding Joker described as being a new incarnation of Satan and having spiked up hair like Beetlejuice before he even did that film.) Batman Return's screenwriter, Wesley Strick, also revealed that Tim Burton complained about making superhero movies and compared them to Chinese water torture. That's when he asked Burton "If you hate it so much, why are you doing the sequel?" And he told him "Because I think I learned a lot during the first Batman movie and I want a second movie where I can put to use everything I learned." And to basically undo the mistakes he thought he made with the 1989 film considering that it was also a studio interfered movie. Burton originally wanted Brad Dourif as Joker but WB always wanted Jack Nicholson as a more profitable actor, Sean Young was supposed to play Vicki Vale and shot a scene where she rode on a horse with Bruce but fell off the horse and had to be replaced, the producer wanted Prince for the pop songs, give Batman Nike shoes, have him fight a ninja as Joker's goon, and change the climax with the church chase to make it feel like Phantom of the Opera. You can also see why in Batman Returns, everything is SO different like Gotham, the Batcave, the gadgets, the batsuit, and no Vicki or Knox because he couldn't stand them. It was so different from the first film that Burton jokingly said "We might as well just call it 'Batman' again."

I'm glad that you're already planning on watching 'Batman Returns', because it is a must-see if you liked this one - personally, I think it's much better, one of my all-time favorites. This gives nothing away, I promise, but two quick things about it: one, if you're curious about Tim Burton's signature style, 'BR' will give it to you; he really cuts loose with the visuals, and two, I would suggest, if I may, that December would be a good month to watch it in. Won't say another word, but - you'll see why. I would also recommend two other Batman movies: first, 'Batman: Mask of the Phantasm', which, though technically a spin-off of the animated series, holds up very well on its own and, in my and many others' opinion, is one of the best and most underrated Batman movies of all time - possibly THE best. Also, if you want to see why people at the time thought 'Batman' was dark, I would recommend you check out 'Batman: the Movie', for context as to what Bat-media was like before then. So long as you're OK with silliness, it's an absolute hoot.

Just a short explanation is all I needed cause I'm still gonna watch you anyways. You're awesome. Yes, first date rules are very cultural. In japan, slurping your food and taking large bites of the food is a considered a complement to the chef and all those who worked to put the food in front of you. That's why most Japanese people cover their mouths when they talk while still chewing because it shows immediate appreciation for what they have just experienced.So just remember that it's different when Dorothy's not in Kansas any more. 8-) I'm glad and delighted you watched this movie, the first iconic Batman movie everyone was excited for. I watched this in the theater when it first came out and that bass in the opening credits sequence was very moving and emotional because there was a depth to it that spoke to the depth of the psyche of not just Bruce Wayne's character, but the Joker's too. It was very cool. I bought the CD right after I left the movie theater. This movie tried to pay homage to the original tv show where Alfred was just a regular butler. There are alot of elements they adhered to, with some updating of course. The Batman trilogy is something altogether different as it was updated for modern times (probably following more of the later comic books). I loved the campy tv show, and I still love this classic Michael Keaton version of Batman. It's not action packed like the Trilogy, but it the story is still told well from a time when not every little thing needs to be explained and left to your own imagination. They got some big names in this movie. Micheal Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Jack Palance, Jerry Hall, Kim Basinger, Billy Dee Williams, and Micheal Gough. It was THE movie to watch that summer of 89.

Heath, Jack and Joaquin were great Jokers, but Mark Hamill's version from animation/the Arkham games is still the GOAT (yes, Luke Skywalker is the best Joker, who would have thought?).

Great reaction! The advertising for this in 1989 was wonderful and had some great products including a cereal. I have the cassette tape of Prince's music for it to this day and Danny Elfman knocked it out of the park with the music. Definitely check out Batman Returns! It's so much fun.

I would have watched with bad audio, it's not like it's a regular occurrence. But I know it's one of those things some people just can't live with. There was so much hype with this movie, the Batman symbol was EVERYWHERE. Before this, Michael Keaton had been known primarily for his comedic roles, so when he was cast as Batman, many fans were upset because they thought this meant the movie was going to be a campy comedy like the old 60s Batman TV show. It wasn't until the trailer came out showing a darker, more gothic Batman movie that fans accepted Keaton and started getting excited about it.

One of my favourite Batman movies, I literally grew up with these movies even tho Batman Forever.. the 3rd in the series was my first. I love the way Gotham is portrayed in this movie. with all the old cars. the clothing, the atmosphere. Michael Keaton.. prolly for nostalgia reasons is my favourite Batman of all, and so is Jack Nicholson as the Joker. Tho in my opinion Jack set the standards for future Jokers.

I disagree with you. This is by far the best Batman movie ever!! 🤗 It truly brings the original comic books to life, which is the whole POINT when you make a movie based on a comic book. It has charm and character. A real classic. Love it! The newer ones can go pound sand. They are all cookie-cutter modern action flicks with CGI. Snore! I saw them all and none of them are memorable or seem individual. This movie however is both memorable and quotable. It stands out from all the rest.

I saw this when I was a kid and I remember the Joker scaring me but I think that's because I hate clowns. While it was still a little silly, it felt like the most modern and serious attempt at the superhero genre. I absolutely fell in love with Batman after this film. This theme to me is super iconic. Before Hans, there was Danny. I loved so much of his music. It always felt like John Williams caliber work. I would recommend Batman Returns, at least. I think that's the last Tim Burton Batman.

Best batman movie imo, perfect blend of dark gritty and camp comic book fun! The smoke pellet he lets off when he escapes from the axis factory was not intented to hide his escape, but to hide the fact he's a regular guy who needs grabbling hook devices to make him look like he's flying

when he lifts his bat wings up it is especially intimidating for someone who has never seen Batman before, one of my favorite parts that makes Batman scary

You are SUPPOSED to see the harness Batman uses. Not a mistake. Batman doesn't fly and uses grappling hooks, harnesses, etc. as tools for effect. Unlike other movies, this Batman tries to not ignore the laws of physics.

With you being a kid of the 90s as I am I’d recommend watching Batman the Animated Series possibly for Patron or even for yourself, Mark Hamill aka Luke Skywalker portrays The Joker

I feel a Batman movie that doesn't get enough credit is "The Batman vs Dracula". I know it's an animated movie but I think it's great!

Batman 1989 was not a bad film. It's actually much better overall objectively than the most recent Batman film made last year. The story, the dialogue, the music, as well as the camera shots flowed more smoothly together than the most recent Batman film that was made. Batman 1989 should deserve a B.

Here's some fun Star Wars New Hope trivia for ya. William Hootkins (RIP) who plays Lt. Eckhardt was also Red Six X Wing Pilot (Porkins) in Star Wars when the Rebels attack the Death Star. He's the pudgy looking one who doesn't pull up in time early in the assault.

It’s interesting getting one who appreciates Gotham. As for dark you have to realize this was coming from the 60s TV show staring Blue wise cracking Batman in bright colors in broad daylight. I think even 35 years later this movie is still a classic and showcases great talent in a series world that was looked at as goofy and not for the big screen.

Imagine being a 10 year old boy in a movie theater with your dad and older brother! Yep, Batman (at least since then), has always been my favorite. Based on my (limited) knowledge of the Batman lore, Jack and most other versions of the Joker are closer to accurate. Heath Ledger did a great job of playing the villain, but not the Joker. Most Jokers aren’t physically intimidating, but the actions of what he’ll do are terrifying. Ledger’s very presence was frightening in his interpretation. I also watched enjoyed Gotham and hope you watch Batman Returns.

This film is the comic linchpin. Burton was inspired by the gritty comics from Frank Miller, and merged the appropriate nostalgia of the Adam West 70s series to the new media. This would go on to inspire the acclaimed Batman Animted series. Which, would intern inspire Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. All of which,brought comic storylines to the film medium after several failed attempted to popularize classic comic book stories, both DC and Marvel.

I had the toy figurines from this movie as a kid. They made one for Bob! lol. Everyone liked Bob.

I like Michael Keaton's version of Batman over Christian Bale's version. With that obvious fake voice when Christian Bale says "I'm Batman" Who in the right mind would believe that voice is real?

You have to keep in mind that the first exposure to Batman before this was the comic book adaptation with Adam West. The tv show had established a cheesy, comical feel. So, when this movie was released, it was 100% darker compared to its predecessor. The beauty of this batman is that it actually captures a transition of time. It is the link between 2 different styles of Batman films. And it does it brilliantly

I grew up with this film, watching it over and over again. Jack Nicholson's performance and the visual style really hold up, but the rest not so much. But back in 1989 the mere fact that this film wasn't an outright embarrassment was a real win. Remember, at that time most people still thought of Batman as Adam West.

The begining where Vicki is looking for Bruce Wayne and he replies "I'm not sure" is one one favorites parts about Keaton as Batman. I've always interpreted it as Bruce is sometimes not all there, and he mixes up his Bruce Wayne and Batman identities. He mistakenly thinks she's asking for Batman, and instinctively he acts like he doesn't know who Batman is. Then later realizes his slip up when he finally introduces himself to her as Bruce Wayne.

First of all great work once again! loved the transparency in regards to the little mishap and yes s... happens to everyone so no worries. enjoyed your take on the movie, and it was dark and scary for its time, but when you watch it decades after the release some of that is lost in no fault to the movie just the effects of time and better tech! :D

Aah, I'm 11 years old and watching a taped from TV VHS and falling in love with all things Gotham for the first time. And sounds like you'd end up getting dolled up, hanging out with '89 Joker and becoming the Harley Quinn we never got..which is a cosplay worth seeing. Credits not being up front in movies was popularized by Star Wars. Lucas actually got in a lot of trouble for it to the point of him leaving the Director’s Guild of America over it, which prevented his friend Steven Spielberg from directing Return of the Jedi. Years later it’s the norm, and that’s largely because of Star Wars in 1977.

I remember seeing this for the first time in the theater. I fell in love with it instantly. I grew up with the old campy series so this was definitely a huge step up. I love the music, the actors, the storyline and the general atmosphere of the whole thing!!! I loved this movie so much that I made my own joker costume. 🤡 I am not a fan of the Dark Knight movies because they are too serious for me but I do absolutely love the Gotham series. I hope you will watch the rest of the movies in this series. I am excited to see your reactions to those too!!! 😍

I saw this in theaters with my parents and loved it so much I asked for the VHS (the 80s!!!) for the holidays that year. I got it, and I watched it, and then rewound it, watched it, rewound it, (repeat that about 10 times). That could have been the only thing I got that year and I would have been super happy. This is my favorite Batman movie and Michael Keaton is my favorite Batman. I can appreciate the others, but this movie, the actors, and this era of Tim Burton has my heart. I can't wait for you to watch "Batman Returns". I really wish they had let Tim Burton do the third Batman movie, but oh well.

I grew up with the morality-driven Batman of the 1960's comics and the campy Adam West TV show. This was different - far darker than West's Gotham and storylines, more twisted than most comic storylines. It was very much a product of the time. Prince was hot and his music was a natural for marketing this; they fit it in appropriately. Product tampering was a recent thing with the Tylenol scare. So there was relatability. I find the architecture a mix of Art Deco (which I like) and gothic, making for an oppressive environment. The buildings are NOT pretty. Jack did a wonderful job as the Joker (very much like Gene Hackman did with Lex Luthor) and really overshadowed the other actors in their portrayals. Keaton's Bruce comes across as dazed and confused, making his way thru his life without an anchor, except for his Batman persona. That side is more brutal to the villains than the versions I grew up with, but again a good fit for the times. Did you notice that the money being given away did have Joker on the one dollar bill? His dream come true. This movie manages to be dark and funny at the same time, a unique blend of entertainment. I really like it. I saw the sequels from back then but have not seen the more recent works, except for that stupid movie where he fought Superman. (Nowadays I like living in the past.) Anyway, great reaction. You recovered well from your technical difficulty and handled it like a champ.

Generally I don't like the decision to have the Joker kill Bruce's parents. If it's a random criminal, Bruce war on crime makes more sense. If it's a specific criminal, all he would need to do is capture that specific criminal and his crusade is over. That said, I loved this movie as a kid.

I'm glad Nicholson was Joker when I was a kid, and Heath when I was an adult. Worked out perfectly.

It was cut from the movie but the $20 million he was throwing to the crowd was fake. The money had joker face on it. Guess he did get his face on money a throwback to when he told Vicki he wanted his face on the $1 bill. It was cut in the movie but i think they kept it in the comic based on the movie

I watched this film when I was kid and it was interesting and spectacular because it was different from the 60's. This film was responsible for more Batman films in 21st century which I enjoy more .😊

I love this movie. Another great Joker actor is Mark Hamill for Batman the animated series, Mask of the Phantasm and Batman Beyond Return of the Joker. Mark got the role of Joker because of his performance as Trickster in the Flash series with John Wesley Shipp as Flash.

I think part of why this movie is Dark is because the world was used to Addam West and expected Addam West. Parents protested after the 2nd movie so after that 2nd film the films made changes. watching the animated films would also be good.

I got all the toys from this movie for Christmas one year. I even had a Bob action figure.

At the 13:55 mark when you mention seeing the harness and wires, look again at the scene and you will see that you are supposed to see the wire, as you see Batman releasing the wire in a short intercut right before he lands. This scene is meant to show you that whole Batman appears to fly and vanish, he is really using wires and other tricks to seem supernatural. Somehow everone always pats themselves on the back for noticing the wire in this scene and never realize you are meant to see the wire.

Took my son to see this movie during its initial release. It turned out to be his favorite movie. This, if I remember correctly, was the first big screen Batman since Adam West portrayed him during the "60s. That was very campy, so that is why this film was considered "dark" at the time. My mother, for example, did not like this movie because it deviated so much from the TV series. Beside the TV series, this is my Batman and my Joker. Loved this origin story for the Joker.

So its funny you saw what Tim felt about the movie because its that reason he didn't want to do a sequel unfortunately Batman made so much money between advertisers and merchandise that it became the father of big superhero blockbusters like how the Avengers movies would do. Hell because of how well it did and everyone wanted a piece of batman that's how the critically acclaimed Batman the animated series came into exist even to use Danny Elfman's batman theme as the opening. But because Tim felt it boring he didn't want to come back so the studio basically said you can have FULL Creative control on how to make the next one to get him to do it and that would become Batman Returns. You will definitely see a difference ; )

Jack Nicholson is a guy that seems like he would become the Joker in real life. I also believe that this movie is real close to the original Idea of Batman.

This was considered dark, as I considered it when I first saw it when it opened, because it was the first take on Batman since the wildly popular, incredibly campy 1960's TV series Batman, that I watched as a kid when it first aired.

This is the first time I've heard anyone but me complain about how inconsistent the look of Gotham was in the Nolan Batman movies! Batman Begins had a gothic Gotham, and the other two were just random US cities, lol!

For upcoming Halloween viewing and reactioning, I suggest watching Sleepy Hollow with Jonny Depp, produced by the team of Burton and Elfman. It was very Tim Burton.

Concerning Billy Dee Williams/Harvey Dent, it was planned for a potential third movie to have him as Two Face but Tim Burton left the project and the idea was kept to have Two Face but Tommy Lee Jones wasr casted to replace BDW....

The only person in this planet who can do a perfect laugh as a joker is Jack Nicholson, so real so natural, the rest of them are so fake and forceful, they have to scream to get the joker's laugh, quite cringe and anoying actually, the laugh was perfectly illustrated by Nicholson by having a set of laughs that range from maniacal and gleefully wild to dark and deeply threatening, especially in"what's with the stupid grind" scene, that laugh was really hard to do naturally, it's as natural as his breathing..i don't know how else to describe it, guys... that is the man, the myth, the legend, the one and only, Mr Jack Nicholson👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I saw this in the theater, when it was released. It was a cultural phenomenon, at the time. There really hadn’t been a film like it. It hasn’t aged well, though… and has so many superior versions to be compared to. I’m with Tim Burton… I find it rather boring, now. But, to be fair, I’m not very impressed with any superhero movies… briefly entertaining, but ultimately… just mindless entertainment that, for me, is forgotten almost immediately. I’m with Martin Scorsese who dismisses them as comparable to amusement park rides. One thing I like about this Batman is the cartoonish aspect of it keeps everything well lit and visible. I hate the trend of the past decade in sci-fi, superhero movies, and fantasy TV like Game of Thrones, where the lighting and color palate are intentionally very dark, to capture a certain mood. Unfortunately, especially for people like me, with vision issues… it’s often like looking at a black screen. I can make out shapes by squinting, but, overall it makes for a miserable viewing experience… and the fine work of so many goes unappreciated. Well, thanks for another fine reaction, Kaielle… sorry about the early technical issues, but you bounced back admirably… like Batman… er… Batwoman.

The order in which you watch the batman movies matters. Tim burton did so much with his set design and attitude or mood. Before that batman was less serious on screen, this was more of a step in the comic book direction minus the "bang!" and "Pow's!" of the original Adam West version.

I hope you'll do Batman Returns soon. To me I think Joker either use armor piercing or explosive rounds for the Batwing. Not to mention Bruce was Batman over a month and the Batwing was new but never test it out the guns and the target system at all, hence why it's a faulty target shot to begin with.

Sadly Billy Dee Williams was supposed to do Two-Face in a future movie but when they decided to change the style of the movie and Joel Schumacher took over directing they changed actors and canceled Williams contract and recast. The only actors in all four of these movies is Alfred and Commissioner Gordon. I think Bruce saying he didn’t know who Bruce Wayne was was two things. He was shocked by how beautiful she was and it was interesting to have someone not know who he was. Michael Gough is in my opinion the best Alfred. He reminds me of Alfred from the 60s Batman. A lot of seeing Batman with wires and other assistive devices is showing how creative he is with gadgets. Jack Nicholson is the best Joker in my opinion. Cesar Romero and Heath Ledger are tied for second then Jared Leto. Mark Hamill is the best Joker voice of all. Heath was inspired by Jack’s performance and Jack warned him not to delve too deep into the character. He said the character almost did him in. I don’t think Bruce or Alfred went to the police and got the report. I think he used his computer to hack into it. Funny thing about the Batmobile was the paint job they did on it. When you see Vicki take her heels off it wasn’t because she was running but because after multiple takes her shoes were scratching the paint off the car. If you get a chance check out the behind the scenes of how this Batmobile was made. One other thing about it was when they first made it there was no way to get into the car so they made a the top slide which they had to do more modifications because Batman’s ears were getting when it closed. Another behind the scenes to look at is how they did the Joker makeup. They had to find a way to have him wear makeup over makeup and not wipe off the bottom layer. 33:21 what they don’t know and they don’t show in the movie is the money is all “Joker” cash. It all has his face on it just to draw people out to kill them.

I was 14 when this came out. I thought it was fun and a little different to the Batman I guess I expected at that age. And Tim Burton was nor as well known as a director back then, but all his previous movies should have clued me in. But I was young and kind of stupid. I still like this movie, mainly for Burton's stylistic touch.

Fun fact: Jack Nicholson agreed to play The Joker only if they allowed Prince to create the soundtrack to the movie.
