Does Batman 1989 work as a silent film?
I say yes. From Burton's influence from German Expressionism in his art direction, the clarity in visual storytelling, and the rigid movement of Keaton's Batman: it gives the film an otherworldly feel. Keaton's suit is often mocked for its rigidness; however, I feel it adds to the character as he moves in a staccato-like fashion that gives him a foreign and mysterious presence.
Video Notes:
The aspect ratio was changed to 4/3. A blue filter was added with additional exposure and film grain. All sound was removed and replaced by Danny Elfman's score. This scene was re-edited (certain shots removed/trimmed).

That Anton Furst production design absolutely owes to German Expressionism. This works so well, feels like Fritz Lang directed this.

Jack Nicholson messing with factory equipment is incredibly reminiscent of the mad scientist in Metropolis, it's practically an homage. Although mainstream audiences pay less attention to Burton's Batmans over time, the films themselves are aging incredibly within today's uninspired comic book climate. I'm more amazed the older I get at the level of creativity visible in every frame.

Tim Burton wanted to keep the story in the 1940s where the character of Batman truly belonged. That’s why the building architecture for this film and Returns is so heavily influenced by German Expressionism.

You're right, the way the goons are dressed in this scene are straight from the comic book pages of the forties. Even with television sets and Prince music, all the film is missing from being film noir is a femme fatale.

I would too! But I also want to avoid being sued by Warner. Bros.

I know people rave about Nicholson as Joker but my god I forgot how utterly stupid it is that his origin story is just falling into a vat of chemicals.

I don't view the film with a realistic perspective; the film strives for expressionism, so I view it through that lens instead. Granted, the inspiration for this scene was from Alan Moore's The Killing Joke; however, I consider the purpose of Jack's chemical transformation to be the catalyst of him losing his former identity. Once losing his identity, he becomes a freak, no longer bound by the laws of society or by the means of sanity.

@@bo8fett. Thats fair, I still think its really stupid, but I do accept it for the ridiculous expressionist fantasy that it is. I guess to me it feels more like zucker brothers comedy rather than something that holds any kind of seriousness, its literally what I child would write in a script "And then he fell into a vat of chemicals, now he is the Joker."

@@artofsam Because having a person who is dressed as a bat fighting crime is the peak of reality in cinema. If you want realism you don't watch batman movies.

@videogamesworld01 no no you see according to the OP a guy dressed up as a bat fighting crime is peak adult cinema but only a 6 year old would think to have a mobster fall into a vat of chemicals and turn into a clown Because that makes sense /s

I actually think Tim Burton was a genius in how he combined the 1940s with the then-contemporary gritty 80s, not only does it create a timeless feel it stays true to the roots of the character. Plus my hot-take is Batman should be set in the 20th century, Batman in some ways isn't all that impressive anymore compared to modern law enforcement.
