This is a fantastic branch out series. You don't see too many channels start strong on movies and then move into games and do it just as well. Great job on this, as an American consumer I've never seen all the home computer ports. I found the arcade game once on a trip somewhere and then searched for it fruitlessly for years, not playing it again until MAME came along. That and Robocop were two of my favorites. One cool thing you didn't mention about the Batman arcade game, unlike Robocop and many others, you don't just get up when you die and keep going, it has a lives based system that respawns you at the last checkpoint. They're pretty far spaced in the museum stretch, and so like Shinobi and a few others, it has a built in level of challenge that infinite money won't make go away.

Ocean Software had a formula for their videogame film tie-ins and it was reliable: take three/four key scenes from the movie. Turn them into "mini-games". Step 3: profit. We saw this in RoboCop and The Untouchables too, but it was Batman that did it best. One feels like one is playing three different games instead of one game with the mix of run and gun, puzzle and driving/flying. Bit of variety. The only thing that would have made it perfect would be an option to choose which one to play as it always felt like a dredge having to swing and climb through Axis Chemicals every time when I wanted to play the Batmobile level!

@residentelect
@residentelect 2 года назад
God, I can still remember the overwhelming excitement and happiness as I tore off that Christmas wrapping paper and seeing the C64 box. It was the "Light Fantastic" package which included the light gun, "Blaze Out" (which featured shooting levels from Robocop, Rambo III, Platoon etc) and the "3D Action Pack" which was a mixture shooters you played while wearing some (terrible lol) cardboard glasses! If I remember correctly there was a "3D" military target game, a gangster movie-esq shoot-em-up and a fighter aircraft game were you manned a turret and took out enemy aircraft starting in WW1 and progressing through to modern jet fighters? I never ever felt that same sense of joy when I was gifted a Sega Megadrive, or when I bought my first PlayStation or Pentium 120 PC. The C64 was just magical...

The Ocean game's platforming levels were really good and had the potential to be fleshed out into a 16-bit Arkham Asylum style experience. The grapnel mechanics worked really well. I recently replayed the Amiga version and I'd forgotten how tough these levels were. The driving/ flying sections looked really good but were really dull to play.
@deceiver444
@deceiver444 5 месяцев назад
The driving section was at least kind of fun because you could drive as fast as possible and still manage most of the 90° turns in the level. But cranking up speed was almost impossible in the flying levels because of all the balloons. Which led to the paradoxical situation where the plane level felt slower than the car one.

My favorite is Mega Drive/Genesis version of this game. I played it a lot when i was a kid. And i got this game after that one time, when one of my friends gave me Batman Returns game, and i liked it so much that i wanted it. Next day, my parents decided to go shopping while i was at home. And after they got back, they brought me the Batman game. But it was not Batman Returns. Instead, it was Batman 1989 video game for Mega Drive console. And at that time, there was two sides of me battling. One was upset that i didn't got Batman Returns game, and the other liked the game based on the first movie. Eventually, second side won, and i loved this game so much, that i mastered it to near perfection. I even now remember, how to get 99 batarangs, so at the end, you can just spam The Joker with them and win easily. Other words, it was one of my favorite games on Sega's 16 bit console back then. And when i found out about emulations in my adult years, when i already had PC, i tried to play other versions of 1989 Batman video games. And... well, i don't like them. NES version is like a clone of Ninja Gaiden 3, and Arcade version feels like unfinished game with bad design and terrible visuals in many places. And other versions... well, they just a piece of crap. Sure, NES version was playable and had good gameplay, but it doesn't feel like a Batman game to me. So yeah, that is my story and opinion about Batman 1989 video games.

Not all Ocean Batman games were created equal. The driving section on the Amiga one, particularly, was a treat for the eyes, played excellently and it was so fun that it could have been effectively extended to become a separate, entirely vehicle-based Batman game - which is a cue that several developers picked up later on, incidentally. Besides that, I kind of disagree, because I personally think all versions held up just fine in relative terms except for their overall length, but that was a common issue back then: the average difficulty was quite high to make up for said limited length, which came as a consequence of the hardware of the time's memory and storage limitations, and most of the time spent playing those games actually involved mastering them instead of strolling through them in the first try, which is the norm nowadays. Also, the music in the Ocean version, particularly the C64 and Amiga ones, was way better than the NES, in my opinion. Just sayin'.

Most Commodore 64 games only had the players' sprite as the only one that's detailed. I believe the enemies always looked blocky as they would turn one of the background layers into the enemies (might be wrong there) but it was definitely a processing issue nontheless.
@MrLtia1234
@MrLtia1234 Год назад
The detailed sprites were always because they had to use two sprites - one lo res and one high res. As the C64 only has eight sprites on screen, I they'd quickly run out if they used it for all the sprites.

After it appered Dendy (8 bit Taiwan analog of Nes), Sega MD2 and later appered Super Nintendo. I heared about Atari systems which be earlier, so I knew about it existance but never saw. Only in last years now, I get know what be so many gaming systems and PC, it very interesting to know more about retrogaming and about the way of video games. I never not saw games in your video. I very like Batman, for me it most favourit superhero. First game about Batman in which I played be KONAMI's "Batman Returns" on (8 bit Dendy - NES analog). and later I played "Batman Returns" on SNES - it one of most difficult game to complete in my life, with bosses which so hard to kill. It very difficult games, but very absorbing. I got a lot of pleasure to play for Batman. And later be on MD2 and SNES "Batman Forever" - good and beautiful game, but it very difficult and I not be able to complete it. I always stoped on stage with "flying safe". But, now in emulators era (with save ability) I will finally complete this on emulator someday😉. Retrogaming Rules! And sure, Glory to Ukraine!

Excellent look back! Did you include the isometric Batman game? I can't remember if I saw it, I think that was the only one I had - like Head over Heels but with a pudgy little Batman instead.

Cheers man, I didn't include the isometric version as that was based on the comics and not the movie.

If you’re covering any other film licensed games , please include Cliffhanger Mega CD , with its very random & infuriatingly difficult snowboarding levels , I can still hear the sound Stallone made every time he hit a log ! 😂
