Fun fact: Robin's original costume wasn't based on the bird, but rather on Robin Hood, which is why he's got the sort of fantasy-styled red vest over a green shirt.
That makes a lot of sense, though the whole stealing from the rich to give to the poor doesn’t really translate when you work for a trillionaire who beats up poor people on the streets every night
This entire thing is completely in character. The wanting a darker suit, wanting weapons, resenting Batman, not wanting bat girl. Basically the most canonical origin story for Nightwing

I like how its an actual non toxic relaitonship and how its mainly due to robin not telling batman and batman understands where he goes wrong, also draws the line. GOOD PARENT

The gun part slays me. Reminds me how Alfred more or less put his foot down that he will use a gun to defend both himself and the Bat Family, firmly telling Bruce it's not the gun that killed his parents but the criminal that used it. Oh and that he hid numerous guns in the manor to the point Bruce won't find them all.

I laughed throughout the entire episode. When it ended, I closed RU-vid and just sat there for a second. Then it dawned on me: Why is Robin in the Teen Titans if he’s 25?
@@HoV326 in batman: the killing joke - the animated movie version, batgirl get down with batman on a rooftop. Caused quite a stir in the community back on release
My main takeaway from this sketch is how great it is that Batman listens to and understands Robin's demands, doesn't get annoyed or angry even though it all comes as a shock to him, and is willing to compromise and find solutions. This is some heartwarmingly good communication between the pair of them.
Remember that whole bizaro situation with Superman and Batman a few episodes ago? The one where Batman thought bizaro was telling the truth and superman was being a bully? If that batman was the opposite of this batman that would mean he’s poor, therefore “good” Superman probably slipped him a twenty or something and paid him to tell these lies so this batman could see how superman felt in that situation.
It's not really recognized anymore, even by DC, but Batman is blue in old cartoons because it's a stand-in for black ink, which was expensive at the time.
"Robin, the gun is the weapon of the enemy!" "Yeah, because they fuckin' kick ass." Somewhere in the multiverse, Jason Todd feels an inexplicable feeling of pride.

It's honestly no wonder why he loved the book. it really helps you learn how to connect to other people. I really like this. They need to let Solid JJ just have his own universe in the DCU. I love how everybody communicates a lot better and seems to get along.
I think back in the day most comic book characters had to be brightly colored because it was easier to print, or something like that. It doesn’t make much sense but there is a reason why most superheroes are brightly colored
Didn't Batman go through multiple Robins? It seems to me that the bright colors is meant to further enhance Batman's stealth by drawing fire... away from himself and towards a small child.
I know it's actually Dick Grayson, but wanting a gun and doing all this in front of Joker makes me believe that's Jason Todd and this is the good ending to A Death in the Family
@@psicopaticduck A Death in the Family is the comic where the 2nd Robin, Jason Todd, was killed by the Joker (Before reviving years later and becoming Red Hood)
@@psicopaticduck One of the Robins got absolutely destroyed by the Joker and became an anti-hero with guns. So Zach is saying this is basically that transformation but without the brutal murder of Robin. Changed name to Red Hood if you want to google more info.
Extra fun fact: While Batman's outfit was designed to be full black and grey, due to comics coloring schemes of the printers of the time the black on his cloak/cowl was highlighted with blue. This led to Batman's iconic Blue and Grey colors.
The first part of their argument is reminiscent of when my mother and I thought someone was in our house, and I was in the middle of the stairs before I stopped in my tracks and asked her why I was going first. Her best response was because I had the baseball bat, and all I could imagine was whoever was creeping giving his hiding place away by either laughing, or chiming in like Joker. Turns out the cat had shut herself in the bathroom.
ultimately rewatching this, I think I really appreciate this version of Batman was willing to talk it over and and try to come to an understanding...even with something he hates like guns...most versions of Batman would probably just hit him with my way or the highway...then gets shocked when they DO pick Highway...
You have no idea how for the longest time I would bring up why it's weird that Batman wears stealthy clothes while Robin is just running around looking like a traffic cone
If Batman gets killed, Gotham is doomed. If Robin gets killed, Bruce Wayne takes another trip to the orphanage. Robin wears red because he's Batman's "red shirt".

Love how they made the Joker into that awkward third wheel as they watch a couple argue, what's the icing on the cake. Is that he wants to leave so they can settle their differences but they won't let him leave 😂
They stayed calm, really listened to each other, and still had time left to beat Joker senseless. By jj's standards, that was actually pretty wholesome 😂
I think Dick picked his colors originally to model it on his circus costume (though comics being comics, the details are inconsistent--in Batgirl Year One, Bruce tells Alfred that Robin wears those colors so people trust him, in contrast to Bruce's dark colors and bad cop (bat cop?) routine). Also his age varies wildly from story to story, sometimes he's as young as eight, in Frank Miller's run he was 12, sometimes he's a high schooler, in BTAS he's in college... very understandable that Batman doesn't know his age. It's pretty hard to keep it straight.

The age change joke of Robin is actually referencing the fact that DC couldn't actually work out what the age gap should be between Robin and Batgirl. Brilliant.

@@nikeneon3188 A bit? let's stop making things sound different when it's a woman doing it folks. A 25 year old dude dating a 15-18 year old girl would be looked at as strange so we can look at it just as strange when it's a woman. We've allowed social ideology to sort of dictate certain aspects of our thinking which actually isn't healthy for society as a whole hence why females get lighter jail sentencing when they are perverts vs men, sentencing for the same crimes in general and many times get slaps on the wrist more often than men. People giggle at the fact that a 28 year old teacher was sleeping with 14 year olds in a News story but they're horrified when it's a 28+ year old dude doing the same, can we say they both deserve capital punishment and call it a day?
Fun Fact: Batman '66 comics actually explain the whole speedo thing. Robin has Bat-Thermal Underwear (I couldn't make this up if I tried) that's basically those things figure skaters wear to keep their legs warm I think. There's also another one of these comics where Robin complains to Batman why Batgirl has a whole ass motorcycle while he has to share the Batmobile, which could've been hilarious if it were voiced by lord jj.
It actually makes sense even without the speedo retcon. He's wearing a leotard, his parents were acrobats and that's a way of connecting with them even though they are dead. The first Robin to not have acrobat parents Tim Drake (Jason Todd's father before Crisis was an acrobat IIRC) ditched the leotard for pants.

Batgirl was actually a completely independent superhero for most of her career, basically butting into Batman and Robin's adventures as a mysterious ally. The Dynamic Duo never let her into the Batcave in the beginning, and they didn't even know she was Barbara Gordon for decades. Barbara even moved out of Gotham into Washington to become a US Congresswoman (this is not a joke) many years before she became an official member of the Bat-Family. Robin had nothing to worry about with her. Everything else though uh.... well, Dick Grayson *did* end up using guns along the line.

To be fair, just because Robin wants a gun doesn't mean it needs to shoot bullets. He's Batman, he could probably come up with some sort of gadget that works as a fair compromise without going against his beliefs.
