▸ Who are Batman and Spawn: Batman is a superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character was created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, and debuted in the 27th issue of the comic book Detective Comics on March 30, 1939. In the DC Universe continuity, Batman is the alias of Bruce Wayne, a wealthy American playboy, philanthropist, and industrialist who resides in Gotham City. Batman's origin story features him swearing vengeance against criminals after witnessing the murder of his parents Thomas and Martha as a child, a vendetta tempered with the ideal of justice. He trains himself physically and intellectually, crafts a bat-inspired persona, and monitors the Gotham streets at night. Kane, Finger, and other creators accompanied Batman with supporting characters, including his sidekicks Robin and Batgirl; allies Alfred Pennyworth, James Gordon, and Catwoman; and foes such as the Penguin, the Riddler, Two-Face, and his archenemy, the Joker.
Spawn is a superhero/antihero appearing in a monthly comic book of the same name published by American company Image Comics, as well as in a number of films, television series, and video game adaptations set in the Image Universe. Created by Todd McFarlane, Spawn first appeared in Spawn #1 (May 1992). The series has spun off several other comics, including Angela, Curse of the Spawn, Sam & Twitch, and the Japanese manga Shadows of Spawn. Spawn was adapted into a 1997 feature film and portrayed by Michael Jai White, an HBO animated series lasting from 1997 until 1999, a series of action figures from McFarlane Toys, and an upcoming reboot film starring Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Renner. The character appears in annual compilations, mini-series specials written by guest authors and artists, and numerous crossover storylines in other comic books, including Savage Dragon, Invincible, and three DC Comics crossovers with Batman.

Spawn's face is held together by a shoestring, is something cool to see since Batman is the reason he has the shoestring. In the 94' crossover, Batman hits Spawn in the Face with a Batarang. That cross over took place between Spawn issues 20 and 21. This is why when issue 21 came out, Spawn had to have his face tied together with a said shoelace.

Really loved this crossover. It brought me great memories of the collaborations that DC did in the nineties with other companies like Marvel. Undoubtedly, the best of those was the wonderful mini-series "JLA/Avengers", the one with the ABSOLUTELY EPIC art by George Pérez depicting Superman wielding Thor's hammer and Captain America's Shield.

I like the twist. Kind of figured Spawn would annihilate Batman..But didn't think Batman would have the time to talk some sense into him before so haha. Kind of wish they'd create some more based off of this plot. Spawns ruthlessness and Batmans brain power would be a nearly unstoppable force. When Batman can't kill, Spawn can get that done if it means winning a battle that needs to be won by killing. When Spawn can't think of a witty strategy, Batman can.

Fun fact: The Spawn/Batman 1994 comic published by Image and written by Frank Miller (with art by Todd McFarlane) claims, "Spawn vs. Batman is a companion piece to DC Comic's [sic] The Dark Knight Returns." I like to believe this means the two are part of the same continuity.

The two are separate stories set in separate continuities. WAR DEVIL is supposed to be set in post crisis earth, SPAWN/BATMAN is suppposed to be set in DARK KNIGHT RETURNS. In every one of these two Spawn and Batman don't know each other.

3:01 And not only that, but it's not like Batman got the upper hand by getting Spawn in the dead zone, he just evened the playing field. From that point on, the fight is equal. Spawn gets just as many hits in as Batman. It's not even close to being as one-sided of a beatdown as it was when Spawn was thrashing Batman with his powers still in play.

@@aleanddragonITA Statistically speaking, you're not wrong. Spawn knows 13 martial art styles, but Batman knows 127. My problem with that is that we've never seen that actually be... Evident. Batman struggles and sometimes even loses to foes like Catwoman, who really only knows what she's picked off the streets. Personally I just write it off as inconsistent comic nonsense, but looking at it from an in-universe perspective, it's obvious Batman's knowledge of martial arts doesn't automatically win him a hand-to-hand fight with someone who knows less. There's clearly a massive margin of error there. I assume it comes down to experience as well. Spawn has had arcs where he's lost all his powers, and was *still* able to take down armies of Hell's demons. Anyway, my point is, I personally don't think Batman simply having a more vast arsenal of combat knowledge nabs him the win in a non-powered, hand-to-hand fight. If we were going purely off of statistics, yeah, I would say the dude who knows *114* more combat styles has it in the bag, buuut as I said, Batman's history of losses kind of throws that out the window. I'm not saying Batman doesn't stand a chance, just that he doesn't necessarily have an overwhelming advantage. At the end of the day, you can view Spawn as a Batman with demonic powers, haha.

I definitely love this little special one shot that they made of Batman/Spawn, it's just a shame that it ends in a cliffhanger. 7:12 call back when Batman through his batarang at spawns head, thus beings the shoelace spawn Ark. 8:55 Spawn meets Joker que the MK11 fight Spawn: "No more jokes, no more laughs." I like hoe the book acknowledges the fact that if a super powerful person like spawn, just attacks Batman out of the blue without any notice that man is going to get his ass kicked. But Batman is also smart enough to recognize this fact in the moment he knows that there is a dead zone, he takes advantage of that. The greatest combatants recognize a fight they can’t win. Although I do like the idea that Batman can come up with these master plans to take down some of the toughest people on earth, as he is a great detective and master strategist, I think it is also important to see Batman lose. Not only does it make sense since Batman can’t be carrying contingencies for every person constantly. But it also allows us to see Batman’s more humble side. He recognized that he couldn’t beat Spawn, at least not now, so she simply stayed in the dead zone, and refused to fight. And then he only left the zone as a way of making a point. To me, that’s way more cool than seeing Batman beat Spawn with plot armor.

Its a stretch but spawn using his chains and cape in the dead zone had nothing to do with his own necro powers because his whole suit is a living thing with its own abilities seperate from him. The dead zones are definitely a plot device but his suit definitely has its own powers (even though those would probably also shut down so idk)

I always understood the dead zones as a zone created by the forces of heaven to block any powers of hell. The suit is a creation of one of the levels of hell so to me it does throw me off the ammount of powers he used in the dead zones. I could be wrong though. Also the teleportation spawn uses is definitely a nocroplasm power

Rob I have to go back and read this again but I had a different take…so shoelace spawn was short lived in the comic and came about because of the first spawn/Batman crossover and then by later issues in spawn the showlace was gifted to cyan. In my mind I thought Todd was trying to say that Spawn and Batman had always existed in the same universe. And the shoelace face was demonstrating a different moment in time. I could be wrong but at the end I thought that was hinting towards a connection to the court of owls and the clown…. And I hope a sequel to this…(sorry I’m a huge Spawn nerd. 😂)

Right before you say how weird it is Spawn's powers work because they're in a Dead Zone, there's a narration box in the comic "Bruce spies Spawn outside the Zone" at 21:36 . Not weird, oddly phrased given the size of the text box but that's about all. "Bruce notes Spawn has left the Dead Zone." That would have been less ambiguous/more obvious. Great video by the way, and wow...what an awesome comic!

I know what some people think of them but these kind of crossovers. Batman vs Predator. Superman vs Terminator. They are Peak comic book lunacy of the best kind and something they could Never make into a mainstream movie. So they are perfect

This was definitely a fun video to watch and I’d love to see more. Though can I throw out a potential recommendation for comic series? It doesn’t need to be a video but maybe something to check out on your own time. There is a power ranger comic series that is genuinely AMAZING to read. I’d recommend it.

2:47 This is my one problem with your recaps. You omit important, contextual details. And then you build further misconceptions based upon that. 1) Todd Mcfarlane didn't just create that dead zone out of nowhere for Batman to be able to fight back. It's existed since the earliest chapters for a reason. Spawn is a creature of hell, and that deadzone exists due to a pact with Heaven. That zone is basically Heaven's turf, which is why his powers shut down. 2) Even without the symbiote, it would take extreme luck for Batman to take Al Simmons down before he killed Batman. Of course it's just a crossover where there is a little tussle, then everything goes back to status-quot, but still... Other than that, thoroughly enjoyed! Can't wait for the next one!

I thought for sure the Batman who Laughs was going to show up. The aesthetic matches, joker knowing all that stuff, black suit with dimension opening powers... it was all right there.

I like how Batman makes the argument that the villains would hate the one that made him more. It reminds me of the Brave and the Bold episode with Joe Chill, the villains immediately went to attack Joe after he tells them how he made Batman.

That's what happened in the comics as well (pre new 52, possibly pre infinite crisis) Batman finds Joe Chill and tells him who he is and what Joe did, Joe runs out of the room to the rest of his gang saying he made Batman. The gang shoot him in anger before he says Bruce's name and Batman takes them out before Joe can say anything

Rob I had to get the new 52 Batman .On the Court of Owls storyline ,Just could have understanding of the storyline of Batman /Spawn storyline ,And dude I do remember the video you did on the Court of Owls ,Which seems like ages ago now ! So now have better understanding of the court of owls in the first volume , And I thought Batman /Spawn is very cool story .Plus the variant cover where Spawn is standing over Batman is cool too .And I gotten into some classic Spawn reading as well .Or the first fifty issues of Spawn that is .But cool video Rob dude .

The whole time I was listening to this video, I couldn't help to be reminded of the interludes in earlier Spawn comics where Todd McFarlane would get up on his soapbox about IP in the comic book industry. In particular I'm thinking of a scene where the DC Big 3 were in a dark prison cell. You couldn't see them, but you could see enough of them to tell who it was. And they were lamenting the fact that they were owned by a giant publishing company. And here is Todd McFarlane now working with that publishing company

Give Batman the whole Justice League Dark and like a weeks prep time and he could maybe pull it off. Spawn would body Ultraman. It says a lot about the Bat and his tenacity though to eat those shots. Spawn was like THINK BRUCE!
