The Batman is about to give us a gritty reinterpretation of the hero. But it’s important to remember the grounded, grotty Batman that gave us the Golden Age of Superheroes: Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy. This video explores the many ways olan influenced the superhero genre, and set a standard for the MCU. Even hiring an indie filmmaker like Nolan was a move copied by Marvel Studios.
But mostly, these Batman movies put character ahead of spectacle. They were daring, risky, and kickstarted the genre into a new age.

We live in the golden age of superheroes. Superheroes are everywhere, these movies dominate the box office, they are the biggest events of the year, and it has been this way decades. And more importantly, many of these movies are actually…good. Some are even considered to be works of art. But how did we get here? When did this Golden age start?
It all can be traced back to one masterful trilogy. Christopher Nolan’s Batman films changed the game, forever. Batman Begins and The Dark Knight completely shifted the perception around comic-book movies - what was once perceived as campy and cartoonish flicks, is now cherished and upheld to the highest cinematic standard.
17 years after Nolan reinvented Batman, we are still witnessing the influence and the legacy of the Dark Knight trilogy. Let’s return to the very inception of the superhero golden age, and explore how the modern-day cinematic blockbusters were born by the incredible films that changed the superhero genre, forever.
The Dark Knight trilogy didn’t just influence almost every superhero that followed it, but it saved the entire superhero genre. This is why we need to start with a little trip down memory lane, and explore how the Dark Knight trilogy saved the superhero movie.
Superman and Superman II were the first major movies that changed the perception of the superhero genre, serving as proof that comic books can be adapted into both good and profitable movies. Then came the Superman sequels and basically undid it all in the most terrible way possible.
Shortly after, Batman 89 came out, and reinvented Batman, giving us our first dark interpretation of a major superhero. For anyone who didn’t read the comics at the time, the assumption was that Batman is this campy. And then “Batman and the nipples” came out, and suddenly this didn’t seem that bad.
As both of DC’s biggest franchisees ran to the ground, it was Marvel’s turn to shine. And many of Marvel’s first movies were very good. Some are even great. But very quickly bad quality threatened the superhero genre once again.
All of this led to an unavoidable negative perception of comic-book-based movies. For decades, audiences saw comics as nothing more than silly cartoons made only for kids. Even after the whole industry was reinvented with graphic novels such as Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns. People who didn’t read comics, simply didn’t take these stories and characters seriously.
And as superheroes movies came and went, this preconceived notion carried over to the big screen. Especially because most of these films came crashing down and leaving the worst taste in everyone’s mouths. Even great films like Spider-Man 2 couldn’t escape this perception.
And perception is everything, it can make or break any movie.
Back in the early 2000s, the overall perception of superhero movies was pretty bad. The audience didn’t take these movies seriously, which made studios doubt if this genre is worth the risk.
Superhero movies needed a paradigm shift in perception.
And then a miracle happened. Christopher Nolan, a visionary filmmaker, a completely unknown director with only three films to his name.

What Christopher Nolan (alongside Hans Zimmer, Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, David Goyer, Jona Nolan, Morgan Freeman, Liam Neeson, Tom Hardy, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Cillian Murphy etc) did with the Nolan Batman trilogy is nothing short of a cinematic achievement, taking the superhero genre seriously with one of the most iconic superhero characters of all time and placing him in a modern day context to tell the story of Batman from a scared child who witnessed the death of his parents to the symbol of hope that the city of Gotham needed and deserved in times of uncertainty. While there have been other superhero movies that took the genre to mainstream levels, such as Sam Rami’s Spider man and Fox’s X men, never before has the world seen a trilogy of superhero movie that strikes the right mix of superhero entertainment while being allegorical study of post 9/11 America, dealing with the fears and paranoia of terrorism, societal corruption, vigilantism and doing what’s right to save the world and yourself from falling into the wrong path. It sticks with a consistent and continuity that perfectly captures the vision of the filmmakers, who wanted to tell this 3 film story that truly felt like a life changing experience rather than a studio product designed to make money. I love the dark knight trilogy, it’s a timeless trilogy of movies that resonates with us all since it reflects so much of the culture and time it was made in and it speaks on a universal level about the human experience, that just so happens to be Superhero movies/comic book film adaptations of the Batman lore from DC comics. Had it not been for the Dark Knight trilogy, there probably haven’t been an MCU, DCEU, or superhero cinema as we know it today for better and for worse.

Exactly The Christopher Nolan Dark Knight Trilogy was really good, influential and successful to further the cause of directors and companies making comic book superhero movies. It had a grounded and realistic take to a non superpowered character who uses his intellect, training wealth and will to overcome his enemies in a city full of insane criminals so I give credit to Nolan and his cast including Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy, Liam Nesson, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway and of course legendary Heath Ledger and the rest of the cast. It really pioneered comic book films the way that Sam Raimi's Spider-Man Trilogy and the X-Men movies were trying to do but in a more realistic sense.

I remember thinking at the time that Batman Begins and Casino Royale were both doing the same thing (yes, CR was the next year, but it was already made when BB released), and they had the same inspiration for all the grounding and gravitas: The Lord of The Rings, which everyone feared was going to be the campiest sparkles and unicorns thing ever, and then right from the narrated prologue showed that it was going to be both faithful and as grounded in reality as possible, which it largely achieved by allowing the titanic performances of that cast to make that world real. I saw BB and especially CR as realizing from LOTR they could strip away the camp and be left with endlessly fascinating character studies.

Personally, I give a bit more credit to the 2 Tim Burton movies, 1989 Batman and Batman Returns. Yes, on the film side, they went back into campy with Joel Shumacher. However, at the same time, they also directly resulted in Batman The Animated Series, as well as X-Men and Justice League. Collectively, I feel like all of these were the first wave of being able to pitch superhero media, and animation, in a more serious light. It's very fair to say the Nolan trilogy revived this in cinema, but I still think Batman Returns and Batman TAS were the true genesis.

X-men saved superhero movies, not Nolan's Batman. After the abysmal Batman & Robin, Bryan Singer successfully restored faith in superheroes with the first and second x-men films. They became huge hits, and was quite good as well. Hugh Jackman as Wolverine is just one of the best casting choices ever made in any superhero film, it's up there with Reeves as Superman. The first and second Spider-Man films by Raimi is also very good, so by the time Batman begins came out, there was no need to "save the superhero genre". It was already saved.

Rami's Spider-man was just treading similar ground to what Tim Burton's already done with his Batman films - it still very much an overall campy comic book film with tiny moments of seriousness injected into them, whereas Nolan's Trilogy was truly groundbreaking and doesn't feel like a comic book film at all from start to finish. I grew up watching Adam West and Tim Burton Batman as well as the Rami Spider-man films and if you watch them again with nostalogic glasses off you can definitely still see a lot of those campy moments in those films which screams "yes I'm a comic book adaptation for kids!" and suddenly you feel a little bit embarrassed watching them because those "comic book" moments are so goofy they are insulting your intelligence, but this doesn't happen with Nolan's trilogy in any moment - Nolan treats the audience like a thinking person, he respects the audience and assumes they will be engaged by a deep dive into the characters' psychology (not just the hero/villian, but EVERYONE around them). They are all entertaining films though but Nolan's is truly a class above and went much further than anyone before.

There's been nothing like the Dark Knight trilogy before or since. It exists in its own superhero movie category. You know a movie is great when you're still talking about it with great affection many years from its release. The trilogy has depth and that's because Nolan always cares deeply about telling a compelling story. Warner Bros risk to hand over the Batman reimagining responsibilities to someone who didn't have a huge track record for making blockbuster movies paid off massively. Nolan just completely upended expectations and gave us a trilogy with so much weight. Christopher Nolan is the man!

I respect the trilogy a lot, but in hindsight it's clear they weren't as important as we thought they'd be with the release of Batman Begins. Batman Begins 2005 didn't need to save Spider-Man 2 2004 (a movie that made three times as much). Heath Ledger was great in Dark Knight in 2008 but the MCU started that same summer with Iron Man. Dark Knight Rises was controversial but highly successful in 2012, but its thunder was stolen with Avengers 2012. At every single step of the way, there was a superhero movie that was far more important and/or successful. The Dark Knight trilogy helped, but it didn't need to save a genre that was highly successful and critically lauded already.

Maybe if you watched the first minute of the video, you would have heard the statement that before Nolan’s trilogy, super hero movies were campy and not taken as seriously. I love spider man 2 but you cannot argue that it is on the same serious storytelling level as Nolan’s films.

I tend to agree, Dark Knight is an A+ movie. But Dark Knight and Iron Man coming out in the same year solidified the bookends of what the super hero movie could be. It could be a character study or a full on comic book popcorn flick.

Hi Ryan. I love your channel and have been a subscriber for a while. Your analysis is top notch. In this video though, I think you're dismissing the impact of Superman The Movie way too much. Yes, it had poor sequels in 3 and 4, but I believe you said it "undid" everything the first movie did. I disagree that the effect of Superman was lost. I don't think I can put links in youtube comments, but you can Google an article where Feige talks about how much reverence they have to the first Superman, and how much of an influence it has over the MCU. Not to discount the effect of the Dark Knight films, because I agree with what you said about their impact, but I think the influence of the first Superman film is still just as strong. Again, great videos, and thanks for all your hard work.

I believe that the original X-Men movies the first and the second were the first ones to try and change the perception about comic book movies. However, they were nowhere near as popular and well-known as Batman. But yeah Nolan had definitely changed the perception about how grounded movies could be very successful and especially comic book movies.

Apparently Kevin Fiege has his creative teams watch TDK before taking on any movie. (IDK if that’s true but…) Simply the gold standard. IMO Black Panther is good because it’s an afro futuristic version of TDK. “Fan service is nice but it’s not a substitute for good storytelling.” That’s just poetic truth.
