RIP Shirley Walker. She was the heart of 90s animated Batman. Her great music gave them a grander score than other animated ventures and a lot more emotional depths.

24:58 What’s brilliant about that scene is Bruce isn’t really talking to his parents. He’s talking to the darkness inside his head, begging to be released from his vow. He didn’t expect to find happiness, but he did with Andrea. His parents would 100% want him to be happy and give up the vow he made. There’s no way a parent would be okay with their son risking his life every night to fight a never ending war on crime.

Ok, no. I love this movie a lot and all, but let's not get stupid and overexaggerate to the point of being just false. "majority?" Bullshit. You could have gotten away with saying that when this came out, maybe. Or a little afterwards. Maybe around the time of Blade and Spawn, maybe. At that time they were just still popcorn flicks, even if some of them were GOOD popcorn flicks, they weren't there yet. But then the Spider-Man Raimi films and Iron Man and the MCU followed, and suddenly your opinion just becomes flat out wrong. When you have movies like The Dark Knight, or Endgame/Infinity War, and basically the majority OF the MCU out there, then you suddenly just become flat out wrong.

Bruces's tragic life makes the eventual revelation that Bruce is Terry's biological father and that Terry would carry on his legacy and be there for him in his final days. That scene and Batman sitting with the girl as she died still bring me to tears and are DC at their strongest.

@@kronos1794 Terri was already like a surrogate son to Bruce. He didn't have to be biologically related. And the explanation given as to how that Terri was conceived is convoluted and laughable. Clearly something Bruce Timm thought was clever but just came off as pointless and lame, just like his obsession with Batman banging Barbara. And for me personally, it does ruin my enjoyment of Batman Beyond. I like the idea that anyone could take up the mantle of Batman and all that he stands for. But now Terri could do it because he had Bruce's genes. It's this whole destiny thing that I find contrived.

@@Darthpsychonis But anyone could be Batman, each of the Robins or Barbara could have taken the mantle if needed. Hard for me to think their explanation was convoluted when everything in JL was kinda silly. It scratched that comic book itch that makes JL timeless for me. Terri also wasn't really special, Waller even mentioned Terri didn't get Bruce's greatest asset, his mind, so it isn't as if Terri was somehow built for the mantle. He earned it like anyone else would have had to do in his position. I'll also take Terri over Damien any day.

Considering Joker was the one who killed Andrea's Father, he knew before everyone else to cross him off the list of suspects. So it would make sense for him to catch on sooner than most as to who the Phantasm is, and why he knew it was Andrea right off the bat during the climax.

Though the arguments for why this flopped at the box office are good, i think the reason why is unfortunately much more simple. In the west there is this bias against animation where it is looked at as inferior to live action. So many of the general audience would much rather go to see a live action movie and this was in the middle of the live action movies. Many parents might also have had the same mentality Korey and Martin have had to other animated series that have gotten a movie. "Why should this be in the theater? We can just watch the show at home".

fun fact: the lyrics in the opening to this movie isn't latin. several people who work on the sound and music went uncredited in the credits. so shirley walker, the composer for not only this movie but for the animated series as well, decided to give them some shine and had the singers sing their names in the theme but backwards. next to danny elfman, shirley walker had the most impact on the musical themes of batman than anyone else.

Great movie, and great entry to the overall DCAU. Yet another glaring reminder about how disappointing DC's failure to create a shared universe was, considering the DC Animated Universe, led by Bruce Timm & his creative teams, was such a resounding success from 1992 to 2006. "Batman: The Animated Series", "Superman: The Animated Series", "Batman Beyond", "Justice League", "Justice League Unlimited", as well as a number of the feature length movies including "Mask of the Phantasm", "Sub-Zero", "Return of the Joker", "Mystery of the Batwoman" and "Vs. The Fatal Five" as a whole, was such a great take on the DC characters, and iconic in its own right. A lot of what we know NOW about these characters, and how we want them presented, was all done first and well in the DC Animated Universe.

The Phantasm character came back in the final episode of Justice league Unlimited in a flashback. Amanda Waller told her to kill Terry' s parents so he could become the new Batman. But she didn't do it at the last moment.

I'm sorry. It's not just Nostalgia talking. This is the very first Batman film that I ever saw in theaters. My dad took me. When that pounding opening score hit by the late Shirley Walker, I was in Gotham for the very first time. But the music is just one thing that this film does perfect. The screenplay the dialogue, the voice acting from Mark and Kevin. The twist. It's also actually the only theatrical Batman film with a compelling love story. There's almost a horror element to the film as well . I'm shocked it was PG . It's genuinely a shame that so few people know about it. Thank you for reviewing it. I hope more people watch and it gets the credit it deserves. I know I'd ruffled feathers by saying it beats The Dark Knight even though I like it better but it sure as hell beats every other film. I'll damn sure say that

16:35 and 17:10 If you compare the women's designs in the comic version, they are more attractive. I always asked why did the two ladies look unappealing here. Aside from this and some animation errors, I do enjoy this movie more as an adult. I was 4 when Mask of the Phantasm released, so not understanding who Batman was or some of the elements in the plot, I didn't appreciate the movie then. We see a vulnerable, emotional side to Bruce that I wish was explored more. I love his relationship with Andrea, I prefer if he was with her over Catwoman.

Just want to point out, calling it a box office bomb is a bit misleading. It was a last minute decision to give it a theatrical release, among other things. It wasn't a bomb because people thought it was bad
