@@MrSteamedchickenvery much so, in the animated series/comics (at least i think in the comics) Jason got beat and killed, then resurrected. In the games he was physically and mentally tortured, starved, manipulated, beaten, and shamed on, FOR YEARS. So YEAH quite a bit darker

Some of the most real and true villains are gut wrenching tragedies, of people youre responsible for them being this way. Not only are they dangerous and can be very evil. But knowing you failed them in some way or are to blame for them being who they became...its a cheat code at this point for stories.

Damian an infant turned child via experimentation was trained to be an assassin since his birth by a distant mother and rich Shadow Organization. Jason at least grew up uninvolved with such shenanigans until he met Batman.

Especially if they aren't willing to change themselves. The only proven method for a slightly normal life for psychopaths is to go through a very long course of psychotherapy and behavior skills training and even that is one step at a time. But Joker doesn't want that, he wants to make Batman suffer because he wants to break him, to strip him off his ethics and to traumatize him and torment him forever. I would've been happy if the comics let him die without changing the entire timeline drastically, just so that there is some closure for the character as a whole and let Batman have peace.

But talking about the canonicity of modern and old comics is a big question. For example: Barbara in modern canon disabled because Joker shoot her in "The killing joke" comics, but in old comics she al right and became chief of police in "Batman beyond" series, which is also part of the canon. So in my opinion at the present time it is difficult to say what is canon and what is not.
