Batman's Mad Hatter: The History of Jervis Tetch (Feat. Mr. Rogues)

I know I said my next episode of "Analysis in Wonderland" would be a review of the Czech film directed by Jan Svankmajer, and I DID plan to upload that in December...but December turned out to be a crazy month for me, and I have had to shift things around. I have already begun work on that video, however, and it SHOULD be ready by Valentine's Day.
ANYWAY, in the meantime, here is a very, VERY special project I've had in the works for a while: some of you are likely familiar with my prior collaborations with Mr. Rogues - a RU-vid reviewer and historian who focuses on comic book villains, with a particularly affinity for the Rogues Gallery for Batman's Universe. I'm a huge fan of his work, and consider myself privileged to have a working relationship with him.
To that end, we decided to collaborate on a video that a few people actually suggested to me, and I think may have asked of him, too: a Complete History on the Batman Villain The Mad Hatter, a.k.a. Jervis Tetch.
And...well...here it is. XD
I hope you all enjoy it; this was a hard one to make, and I'm having some mixed emotions about the results, but it was a challenge that taught me a great deal, and it was wonderful to collaborate with Rogues again. Hopefully his fans will like this just as much as any of mine!
Thank you all, and don't worry: the Svankmajer movie review IS coming...though, for the record, I'm rather worried about what you all will think of it when it's done...

Oh, the idea isn't a bad one, it just kind of came out of nowhere, and there wasn't really any clear reason for it to be that way. So, in terms of continuity, it doesn't really clear things up. Whether it makes things less or more confusing, however, is up to debate. XD

Haha, I do happen appreciate that as well! In my personal "RF's random collections" , I've aquired over the years several issues depicting old rogues terminating their impostor to reclaim their mantle... There is Mad Hatter over course, but also good ol' Prometheus, Black Mask, and in a way, both Riddler over Cluemaster, and Firefly over Firebug. And I'm pretty sure I'm forgetting someone... oh, of course, when Lady Clayface visited the previous 3 Clayfaces in the "Secret Origins" run, with various results.

I think the main problem that keeps Tetch down in the B-list is the fact that most writers eighter don´t know or don´t really care that much about writing a sympethetic and somewhat relateble Mad Hatter. Yeah there´s the one from Joker´s Asylum, but that´s really it. Not to say that you can´t make the character unsympethetic and still have fun with him, but at least try it for once. Great video, it´s so weird though seeing you on another site that isn´t Deviant Art.
@jjhatter3420
@jjhatter3420 4 года назад
Oh, there are a few versions of the Hatter that aren't necessarily sympathetic, but DO work well. It can be done, but generally speaking it's more the exception than the rule. And in my opinion, he works best when he's at least somewhat more relatable and sympathetic. Anyway, thank you! And I've been on RU-vid for a while. I've just been on DA longer. XD

I think a great origin story would be a mixture of the Hatman’s (impostor Mad Hatter) and his Wonderland themed origin. Maybe his father was a hat collector leading to his favorite character being the Hatter from “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” leading him to becoming obsessed with both hats & fairytales eventually becoming delusional in wanting to make Gotham his own personal playground where he can reenact all his favorite fairytales, specifically “Alice in Wonderland”.

Wow, it’s been a year since this was uploaded and I first saw it (where does the time go?). It still remains a great collaboration. You two work very well together, especially when it concerns Jervis Tetch. Aaah, yes, Jervis Tetch. If there is a dictionary that contains the phrase “a mixed bag,” I guarantee you that Jervis’s picture is right next to it. I love Jervis. At one point he was actually my second favorite Batman villain (you can guess who my number one is based on the image next to my name). But after I learned of the Secret Six version... he was bumped down to number six (thanks, Gail Simone, for temporarily ruining this character for me). Interestingly, the Hatter was the villain of the first Batman comic I ever read, the first issue of Knightfall. Now, I’ve only read a few Hatter comics, those being Knightfall, Mad, Madness, and a Serious House if it counts. So I’ve sort of gotten a mixed bag of Hatter comics (Knightfall and Madness are really good, but Mad is kinda meh, and a Serious House is a good story overall but it’s portrayal of Jervis rubbed me the wrong way). I love the TAS Jervis, I liked the Arkham Games’ portrayal (wasn’t a fan of the design though [and it was GOOD darker version of the Hatter, unlike what Gail and Morrison did]), David Wayne’s “Jervis” was great, and with Gotham I was somewhere in the middle (I liked Benedict Samuel, but the writing has left me polarized, and the design was pretty mediocre until his final appearance). Not familiar with Ted Knight’s version (I need to look him up). I wasn’t a fan of Bad Blood’s version, and the same with Young Justice’s. So in general I suppose I’ve had a positive experience with the character, but little of what I’ve seen really amazes me, and the negative ones REALLY tend to bother me. Also, wasn’t Hatter supposed to be in Batman Unchained and the Dark Knight Rises? Or are those rumors just rumors? Anyway, rant over, great video!
@mackthisarrowhearth295
@mackthisarrowhearth295 2 года назад
I think Jervis have had a sister Alice which they together did play pretend the Alice in Wonderland stories would be a nice and cute origin. But if she disappears, no one of her family knowing where she went for years, family broken up, Tetch snaps as a kid, spending his time partially in a fantasy Wonderland, reanacting his time with his Alice. This keeps his cool during his studies in Neurology, but then he sees someone similar to his sis. When he finds "Alice", he tries to convince her she is the lost sister. However when she does not take that, he combines his Neurological studies and "their" past wonderland stories trying to reawaken her Alice inside, but it does not work. His fantasy world start collapsing with doubt, and to cope he fully goes into Wonderland, seeing Alice now in everyone, yet no-one recognising them as Alice. He becomes more and more deranged and tries to bruteforce brainwash them into being his Alice he so dearly misses.

Is it bad that I kinda like the Secret Six version of Tetch? His vileness is so over-the-top that it becomes morbidly amusing, and it always felt like Gail was doing what she does best; making the best out of a sh*tty set-up. Sure, he isn't nearly as good as her Bane or Catman, and I'd obviously much prefer a sympathetic take on Jervis, but if we had to have Jervis be a sex offender in the comics I'd probably prefer to stick with how Gail handled him over, say, the Loeb/Sale or Robin Y1 versions.
@jjhatter3420
@jjhatter3420 4 года назад
The Loeb/Sale Version I never took to be a sex offender. I suppose one could argue the implications are there, but they never really touched on it, as opposed to other versions that make it pretty obvious. I also distinctly recall that the Hatter "never sampled his wares" in Robin Y1, though that one's decidedly more sketchy. I will say Secret Six had a lot of interesting IDEAS, and I admit it helped to flesh out Jervis a lot more than either of those depictions, but I think it pushed a line or two for that were just too far. But if you think it works for you, in some way, I can't say I don't misunderstand. I actually believe you may be right on that front: Gail tried her best to give the character more depth, but by that point Tetch had been established as a pretty [bleep]ed up little rascal, so I guess the damage was already done. I guess the Secret Six bothers me because it was SO CLOSE to actually being a GREAT Tetch, in my opinion; it's the sexual deviancy that kills it for me. I wish they had just completely ignored that and just focused on Jervis as a childlike innocent who wanted a companion and could perhaps be rather twisted and deranged, but wasn't necessarily a perverted person. I actually very much like the Loeb/Sale Version, simply because I think you can read a lot into that version and because the design is so good. On the opposite side of things, I love Robin Y1 as a story, and the design of the Hatter in there is one of my favorites (in fact, as time goes on, I'm tempted to say I may like it MORE than the Tim Sale version, which has been my number one for a long time), but the actual DEPICTION of Jervis himself is far from my PREFERRED idea of the character. I named Y1 as one of my top ten Hatter comics out there, and I still stand by that, but that's mostly just because of the size of his role and the way he's written and illustrated; the actual CHARACTER, so to speak, doesn't really appeal to me all that much.
