Hey everyone, So sorry again the Street Fighter episode was lost. We discussed reshooting it but ultimately decided that a reshoot so soon after the first time wouldn’t have been as good. We do have plans to revisit Street Fighter in the future. For this episode the cast watched the theatrical release of the film. We hope even if you can’t find any love in your heart for Batman v Superman you at least enjoyed this soft reboot of Deep Dive! -Teara
Dakota Trotter yeah I feel ye, my fav channel by a mile.....but I’d prefer the gang to do less, and stay happy for longer....I never want it to end! But yeah, shorter vids make me less happy.....but that’s kinda like ‘less rich’
I honestly think deep dive has substantially changed the way I think about an approach watching movies, and I’m only just realizing this as I watch the sort of wrap up bit at the end of this video. This whole channel really. I’m definitely kinder and more thoughtful in my approach to movies (mostly when it comes to adaptations of books I like because that’s what I used to be harsh towards) since discovering this channel. Also Elisa’s TAZ jacket is top notch.
I think people have just been ruined by internet culture and constantly being battered with "this thing bad. You must hate it." How many people vehemently despise Bee Movie because of memes and have never watched the movie(it is bad, but not because people told me to think it's bad)? How many people hate Eragon because everyone says it is the worst adaptation, and not because they actually read the book and watched the movie? People need to think for themselves
i know this comment was a year ago but i discovered this channel yesterday ive watched alot of the channel since then i sleep for about 2 hours a day i got issues ok but this one deepdive considering I started with movies with mikey off a recommendation in another video i feel im watching my own mom and sister who never fail to find a way to enjoy every show they watch for years i now have a channel to watch that which represents my moms and sister but im still the one who wants to love everything but still sees all the faults and doesn't ignore the faults just wants to find a way to love them while acknowledging the faults P.S im the 96th like
In no particular order, some highlights of this episode: - The editing start to finish. - Zoe's right and just admiration for Gal Gadot/Wonder Woman. Hard same. - The sequence of Sam trying to explain the dream scene... and Elisa remaining confused. - The overall positivity actually making me, finally, want to see this movie. - Mikey's entire outfit.
I am so sad that you guys suffered through Street Fighter and then the harddrive ate itself, but damn if this wasn't a very good Deep Dive all the same. Thank you all for loving movies, even the ones that are very very hard to love 💜
I mean it was more of a bathroom sink, but that was pretty on the nose. High point for me in the fight was Batman punching Supes in in the face as the kryptonite slowly wore off culminating in Batman's "uh oh" face. That was magnificent!
Wasn't prepared for that Clippy comparison, but it fits so well. Also, oh geez, Wild Wild West is gonna be a ride and is hopefully not as physical disability taunting as I remember.
I just want to tell you guys how much I love this show. I love that you take perceived "crap movies" like this and try to look at the positive side of them. And you're honest in your reactions and in your commentary. Regardless of anything else, it's clear that you all love movies very much. You're all awesome. Thank you.
I could cry guys. Someone on the internet reviewing a non Disney comic film who's opinions can't be summed up by, "It's not Disney, therefore, it's not good". I'll follow your channel. Thank you.
Thank you. Thank you for just giving the movie a fair viewing on its own terms which is sadly what many howling voices who claim to know film and film criticism never did when it was released and will probably never do in the future. Love it, hate it, or just shrug your shoulders and move on to something else but movie discussion would benefit greatly from more open critique of what is on the screen and not what personal expectations want to be on the screen.
Everytime I watch one of these, I cant help but think that I really wanna be friends with these guys. They always look like they have so much fun together
“Movies are imperfect and they’re weird and they come from strange places to explore ideas you have” -Mikey Dang it that’s an perfect if concise statement if I ever heart one
I think one of the problems these later DC movies have is that they're built off of some of the most extreme versions of the characters. This movie steals imagery from The Dark Knight Returns, which was meant as a dark future "what-if" scenario and shouldn't be the version to build a franchise around. This version of Superman often feels closer to Dr. Manhattan than he does a wholesome Kansas farmboy who just so happens to have super powers.
True tho I feel most of the scenarios (around superman especially ) have a more present day setting in terms how we would most likely view people like them .
IRONWARD Gaming agreed. What Nolan did for MoS was write a story that could fit in to our world now. He made it as realistic as he possibly could, so then they continued it for BvS. How would Superman be treated if he were real? How would he feel? That’s what it comes down to. These aren’t extreme. Injustice Superman is extreme. So building a franchise off of “how would it be if they were real” is not extreme. Later DC films took that scenario out though anyway.
I dont think thats a problem Mr britton. And yes you can build a franshise around that Batman. Have you ever read New 52??? Batman can have all his adventured already done...and still be involved in new misteries. Sorry. But your point doesnt make sense.
BvS was not meant to "build a franchise", it was already set. The franchise of DC and DC movies is already built. Zack Snyder was doing a movie arc that would be 4 to 5 movies. Then the spinoffs etc. would do their own thing.
Mikey, the way you articulate your thoughts about movies is amazing. All of you guys are great, but Mikey just gets me. Don't ever stop making videos, guys; and I will like, share & stay subscribed.
Honestly, what strikes me as the most frustrating about this movie, is that it is SO close to being absolutely breathtakingly good. Individual components of this movie, (shot-composition, story-beats, single moments) are clearly those of someone with great ambition, and yet they failed so expertly to make all that come together...
yeah i was reading some ideas about what people thought about this movie and wow, i agree, it was on the verge of being great but zack snyder just really wants to use references, "deep" symbology, and foreshadowing of future events... just focus on the story, zack you're almost there, don't believe your own hype.
"Individual components of this movie, (shot-composition, story-beats, single moments) are clearly those of someone with great ambition, and yet they failed so expertly to make all that come together..." But all the individual components make up the movie you are watching, so I have no clue what your point is.
What i love about this channel is the genuine love of movies. Like, the internet is a giant shithole of negativity and instant criticism, but you guys are truly present when watching these (arguably) sometimes problematic films. And you are able to get something out of it, and really engage with it, which is very rare. :)
I am 1000% with Zoe on everything she says about Wonder Woman. It is honestly, for me, the most apt expression of Wonder Woman and everything you feel about her. Thanks, Zoe.
Trailers can mislead... critics can influence opinions ...it is important ( I think) to enjoy movies in their own context regardless of source material .
And the third movie later (Justice League) featured the god-like figure's resurrection. "In the third film he rose again in fulfillment of his contract."
Say what you want about everything else in this movie...you MUST give it up for the score. Zimmer absolutely kills it (as he always does) and the unique arrangements for each characters are amazing
This movie perfectly illustrates the importance of music and talented composers. From the iconography of Jaws to Star Wars, the themes in this film are bombastic. Especially the WW theme....
In a video essay, Evan Puschak (aka NerdWriter) summed up the problem with Batman v Superman and all of Zach Snyder's movies perfectly, "Snyder sacrifices scenes for moments." There's one beautifully executed shot after another, but it's kind of like a song made of nothing but musical hooks with inadequate connective tissue in between. It's disjointed, incoherent, and illogical. What's needed is some basic journeyman storytelling, but Snyder isn't interested in serving the story unless it can produce a "wow" moment. I've watched the theatrical version and the extended, director's cut twice and I enjoy the "wow" moments, but I'm always disappointed with the overall storytelling.
I'm so sorry you guys lost your episode and hard drive, but thank you for this episode! It was wonderful. Also we'll miss you Thaddeus! Good luck with your new endeavors!
Honestly I've only ever seen the extended edition and it's so good. You get so much context and depth but the cut down version turned too many people off of watching the very excellent 3-hour version.
Oooooh you’re all back....it’s lovely to see you! Missed you guys! It seems like there hasn’t been a deep dive for-evvvvvvEEEEER.....would have loved to see street fighter....Deep dive is my absolute favourite thing....Mr Mikey......I’m going to hold my breath TIL your John Wick 3 video is posted, don’t suicide by mikey me....okay, starting.........NOW.......*deep inhale*
Thank you guys for being fair and not just outright bashing it. You guys took the time to understand the lens this film wants you to see these heroes through. You are one of the few who realize that this is exactly how the world would react to an all powerful hero who doesn't really have to answer to anyone and a Batman that lost his way after Jason died
@@daniellemhall1358 To be fair, that's not really that hard. Just get a British character actor that's been doing the acting thing for decades and it shows on their weary face. That's literally it. Pretty much all of Alfred's actors fit that bill.
Did you ever notice that Snyder's Superman can detect when Louis Lane is in danger and know EXACTLY where she is and get there in a few moments, but he can't do the same thing with his own mother? Because if he could Lex's whole plan would have failed. Could Lex signal his people to kill Martha faster than Superman could get to her?
Nicely done. Not immediately, but I would be fascinated to see a Deep Dive REDUX for the BvS Uncut/directors/whatever they marketed it as . Also, Elisa's (?) red leather jacket is SMOKIN'!
@@ourkeving in the tc, kgbeast and his team kill people with bullets, and then they frame superman but he doesnt use bullets. in the ulitmate cut, they show that they burned the bodies, as if superman used heat vision
ourkeving Also, the senator finds out Lex is lying to her right before the hearing, making her speech about truth directed at Lex and gives her much more agency before the explosion. In the theatrical cut she doesn’t know and continues to be Lex’s pawn until her death.
it's a flawed movie by someone who really wants to do heady stuff but also is way too good at making stupid juvenile action to really commit to his somewhat mature ideas, and a team of talented and dedicated people trying to make that conflicted vision a reality.
@@justinriley lack of subtlety and nuance? Maybe. Buy lack of humanity? Hell no, zack snyder love human, that the point of the whole movie, showing the flaws and humanity of the characters
Glad to see BvS getting some love. Yes it's a flawed film but also beautiful, complex and really interesting, such a shame we never got a Zack Snyder Justice League!
Yeah it puts the characters of Superman and Batman under a microscope and views them through the political lens of a cynical modern world. Unfortunately, all of this gets dropped about two-thirds of the way through and the whole film becomes a tedius bashum smashum CGI-fest
@@newengland707 Well complex enough that a whole bunch of click bait critics, and casuals, even comic book readers and whatnot constantly nit picked it instead of actually analyzing it...
17:02 pause the video and tell me that's not a modern day renaissance painting. I love the contrast of expressions from the three people on the right side of the frame and Mr. Stoic on the left of frame. Simply beautiful
The idea that Batman suddenly realized superman "has a mom" is the only interpretation dumber than the "same name" interpretation. You don't think the world's greatest detective surmised that superman had a mom?
The best summary I ever read of Batman V Superman was that it's a movie length temper tantrum by Zach Snyder against people who didn't like Man of Steel.
The music in this film is unreal. Its just everything. There is Mad Max: Fury Road meets Batman (Nolan trilogy) meets Man of Steel meets Horror meets Action meets … You can see why Hans Zimmer and Tom Holkenborg both went for smaller, quieter movies next ^^ (Hidden Figures for HZ and Brimstone for JXL)
I truly love this movie. The extended version gives me such a chillingly realistic version of how our world would really react to a being like Superman. I understand many people want their heros to be symbols of hope and to have fun, but life isn't always fun and larger than life figures struggle. This movie did so well, despite certain shortcomings. I know Synder gets a lot of crap but the man is one of the most visually gifted directors working today.
your seriously misunderstanding why we have super heroes in the first place. Also the movie just didn't understand what superman is.Superman is a good person who understands humans because he was raised by them. The film neglects his boy-scout persona for a loner with super powers.
@@hepty3179 I'm misunderstanding why we have super heroes? That's kind of presumptuous to assume our super heroes can only be portrayed in one way. They shouldn't have to be comedies or light hearted. Hence the tons of super heroes that aren't
@@OHCAM5 so these characters can't be explored in different ways? I don't buy that. I've seen superman be cheerful and happy in 5 movies prior to Man of Steel. It got stale. For me, of course. Superman is allowed to be gritty in dark. Same way he's been portrayed in Injustice or any of dark comic archs.
What Mikey said at the end about adaptation is close to where I am on this. There have been several versions of these characters over the years. Some I like. Some I don't. The versions of Superman and Batman in this film are not ones that I like. I felt that way about Man of Steel too, but I'll be there to see what Matt Reeves does with Batman in his film. Maybe it will be a version that I like more.
I feel the same way about Nolanverse. Good movies but horrible batman. Personally The Dark Knight Returns is my favorite batman story so I dont mind old grizzeled batman but Keaton probably did it the best so far.
You both are part of the problem why BvS and MoS is so hated. You want your specific type of character. You want your specific character to act in a specific way. Or else it is not that character and you dislike it.
@@The80sWolf_ I don't see how that makes us part of a problem (and I'm not really sure what problem you mean). We like different versions of the same characters. No big deal. I'm not out picketing in the streets claiming that the DCEU destroyed my childhood or swearing off DC. I'd still take MoS over Superman IV, a terrible movie starring a version of the character that I did like.
It's just so convenient that they want to introduce us to a Batman that can kill without a second thought, but Batman conveniently never kills the Joker, Harley, Deadshot or pretty much any villain that's not a random thug.
Thanks for the video, guys. I didn't hate "Batman v. Superman" like some people. Sure, it's dark, but wouldn't it be IRL? It's not the comical fight scene we got in Superman II. There's a lot of good stuff in it and I agreed with all your points. Alien Clippy? Love it! I'm a big fan of the TV Crimes podcast; I did not recognize Mikey Neumann right off. They used the TV Crimes theme music in Part Three, which filled me with joy. Now, I have to check out FilmJoy's other videos.
I just watched this movie for the first time a couple of weeks ago (thank you youtubeTV!). I think the ambition of the movie is something to be lauded. My instinct was to say "why couldn't they have better balanced it with humor and why did it have to be so so grim dark?" And I think that those are valid thoughts, but the end result would become something that looks like a Marvel movie. And I would love to live in a world where we can have superhero movies that aren't all the same, where they can have adult themes (not in the gratuitous sense). That being said, this really doesn't feel like the property to do that with.
Exactly. The marvel formula that Disney created is a pure cancer on film making. It has taken such a hold on comic book related movies that it is seen as some kind of standard.
If your girl is depressed and worried, and refuses to get you emotionally into her. Just fuck clothes (including shoes) and step into the water with her. She will get shocked, think you're crazy, but when she sees the look in your face that says: "I don't care, all I care about you" She'll just laugh at you for being silly and stupid. ................................................................................ Yes, It is stupid to keep your clothes (and shoes) on while stepping into the bathtub with your loved ones in it. That is the point of the scene, he is being stupid on purpose to get a strong reaction out of her
@@hepty3179 ...and there were so many bad parts. Grandma's Peach Tea. The Super Duper Special Bullets that Lex was supplying to that warlord for.... reasons? Watching two beloved comic characters fight for silly reasons and feeling dirty about it. That fucking convoluted incomprehensible dream sequence. Oh, and Hans Zimmer basically decided that the entire soundtrack needed to inflict blunt force trauma on the audience.
@@hepty3179actually that was a good part. And its practically saying to Senator Finch, F*** You & your hearings. -mrs Finch told him, she wont take a bucket of piss just because someone calls it "Peach tea". And those bullets created leverage , because not even General Swanwick was able to reveal the truth about Lex. Lois can do it later because she connects Lex to the senate explosion & doomsday creation. ♠️Your beloved heroes ALWAYS fought for weird reasons. Either 1. One of them is mentally manipulated. (Hush, Endgame, darkknight N°6, New52) 2. One of them goes Totally out of character. (Tdkr, Sups as a pawn of the government, red son crazy suicide Batman, injustice sups) 3. A villain manipulates both heroes (Lex Luthor:ManofSteel) (because they DIDN't knew each other) The only times they fought naturally was because they didnt knew each other. And those fights are very short. (Batman/Superman animated, worlds finest) (JL origins: New52) Sounds really familiar to what happened in BvS. Where we had a Fallen Batman manipulated by Lex to think Sups only brings disorder & chaos because he is just an Alien with no real connection to earth. And Lex knew Superman would Never fight to kill Batmn, so he used leverage. Thats pretty acurate to the Core of the fights. Why? Because once they know each other...they barely Will disagree.
I am so upset that we'll never get Street Fighter Deep Dive. It is one of my favorite schlocky action flicks and one of the top 3 video game movies of all time. Maybe you guys can do Mario Brothers to make up for it? No Raul Julia but Dennis Hopper chews the scene just as well as him.
On a mostly different topic, I think it'd be interesting to take a look at the (most recent) animated adaption of the Death/Return of Superman arc and the choices they made there. Most notably, the perspective shift from the very neutral viewpoint of the original comics to the sort of over-Lois's-shoulder that the animated films go with does a great job strengthening and giving weight to the fight with Doomsday (which in the comics is just a bland series of fistfights that abruptly ends with the hero dead), but unfortunately kind of mauls the alternate Supermen who show up later, because there's no space for them to really have character. Not having Steel shoot railroad spikes was also a totally unforced error.
How is it that I'm only watching this now, in 2024? Great video, charming hosts, interesting, thoughtful opinions. I have my own fairly strong feelings about this movie and I've always seen it as the complicated, flawed middle chapter of a pretty cool trilogy (part 3 was the mammoth, 4-hour Snyder Cut - not that garbage the studio released to theatres). Thanks for this.
Only 4 mins and change in, I've said to friends before- I'm "eh" about alot of aspects of this movie- but Bruce Wayne running into the cloud of debris to help with everyone else running away might be my favorite Bruce Wayne/Batman moment in any of the movies. That seriously tells you all you need to know about the kind of man he is...
Flash paradox Superman is my favorite take on what it looks like if the world doesn't trust him. It changes his backstory a lot though, but also gives him more reason not to trust humans.
I'm curious if you watched the extended or theatrical cut of this movie. I only saw the extended cut, and thought it was a solid and engaging movie. But I looked up the scenes that were re-added as compared to the theatrical cut, and I can totally understand why it was poorly received without those scenes.
BvS is my favorite cbm. And then you say that it has bad script I can asure you this script has less plot holes then other comic book movies. You just have to listen dialoges more carefully. For exemple, why Lutor uses special bullets in desert? It was expleined 3 times in dialoges.
That's the problem with alot of the people and the problems they had. They don't pay attention. There's so many details that explain stuff but people don't pay attention
@@lucasman85 What was the point of the bullet subplot with Lois when Lex was just going to kidnap her and reveal he is the bad guy anyway? There were 4 major scenes taking up nearly 20 minutes of a 3 1/2 hr movie dedicated to that redundancy.
@@Eaglemna I'm not sure what you're insinuating. Are you saying that lex should have always been in the shadows? I don't see that as a valid complaint because that's a staple of pretty much every comic movie in existence. Every single villain comes out of the shadows and reveals to the hero that they were behind everything. It makes even more sense for luthor since he wants Superman to know he's superior. Also the bullet isn't a subplot since it's tied directly to the main plot of Superman being framed for the Africa incident. Also you're assuming the way he kidnapped Lois was his plan the whole time. He kidnapped her because she was on to him via the bullet trace. He says this in the roof scene. Also nobody knew lex was behind the bombing and the government refused to acknowledge their involvement in Africa as well. I don't see the redundancy you claim exists in the movie.
@@lucasman85 No, I'm saying Lois was involved in an utterly pointless plotline that went nowhere relevant when other subplots revealed the same thing but better. Lex still would have made Superman and Batman fight, regardless of the bullet stuff. He still was building Doomsday, regardless of the bullet stuff. He still kidnapped Martha regardless of the bullet stuff. That was in there solely to give reason to bring back Amy Adams. So it wasn't a bathtub scene, and then ESP that she needed the spear and nothing else.
@@lucasman85 they're idiots alex, they dont pay attention to the film. after all, attention is a three syllable word for any thought too big for little minds ;)
Wow. When they're describing the version of Lois Lane that they're familiar with as just a damsel in distress.... Damn. They need to check out a wider range of Lois Lane. Lois is usually a stone cold badass. The reason she's so frequently "in distress" is because she's constantly running into danger, mocking supervillains TO THEIR FACES, and sabotaging their plans. She's utterly relentless and borderline fearless. In the old Max Fleischer Superman cartoons they had her defending a train. She just picks up a Tommy gun and gets in a gunfight. That was all the way back in the 40s. She's been like that for AGES. Obviously portrayals are all over the map for a character who's been around that long, but I'd argue that any characterization of Lois Lane that makes her a helpless damsel in distress has TOTALLY missed the point of that character. She's probably the Ur example of the "feisty female reporter" stereotype. She's literally the page image for the "Damsel Out Of Distress" trope on TV Tropes. tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DamselOutOfDistress
