Drives me nuts people not understanding the Martha moment. Not that I'm a genius or anything, but I understood it instantly. Check out, *Why You're WRONG About Batman v Superman - Batman's Motive Explained* he breaks down BvS way better than I ever could. There are some arguments, like Lex that are subjective, that's ok. I get it, though this Lex I'm *ok* with. This version has been in comics as well, but I do love the "traditional" Lex. Most of the arguments against BvS are just objective misunderstandings like the Martha moment. Again, I'm no genius, but it's crazy to me how misunderstood this movie is.

I think it's actually a great new plot point and a great, unused revelation. I love these movies but they failed this moment by either 1. Not establishing that Clark calls his mom Martha. In comics after Jason dies, Tim shows up and says that Batman became much more violent, risky and he was going to get killed and he had to prevent that. For me BvS was a "what if.." scenario, what if Bruce didn't get any support, lost his son, didn't have Justice League and lost even more people in an alien attack. Bruce knows he became a monster after 20 years in Gotham, he embraces this idea.

@cowchow4284
@cowchow4284 3 года назад
@@greyygoblinn5639 I understand that point but batman’s whole goal is to not allow another person to experience what 8 year old bruce experienced. He’s already shown he has no care for human life so, what difference does it make that Clark has a mother named martha?
@greyygoblinn5639
@greyygoblinn5639 3 года назад
@@cowchow4284 I wouldn’t say he doesn’t care for human life but it’s more of a he’s not going to go out of his way to save you anymore if you’re a villain. He’s gonna save people but if you’re a bad guy he doesn’t care if you live or die. When he’s about to kill Clark and the only thing Clark was asking for him to do is save his mom, in that moment he realized this is just a person. Superman didn’t ask for any of this and Bruce was so fixated on hating Superman for the things he did like he caused it. It’s not the name that is the same, it’s the fact that facing his own death he was still worried about others and not himself. An attribute Bruce lost years ago

@greyygoblinn5639
@greyygoblinn5639 3 года назад
@@cowchow4284 I never said he was a changed man, he’s still a jaded, and fueled by hate. He is still extra rough. You’re looking too deep into the “Martha” aspect. The name could have been Mary and it would still have the same effect, or hell it could have been lois. Lex and batman both hated Superman. Lex hated him unconditionally but Bruce hated him bc he was fed the lies throughout the movie by lex. You can’t take everything at face value, this movie has a little more depth than people give it credit for in the themes. This movie is about hate and how to over come it and come to terms with it. And the only dude I’d say he KILLED was KGbeast . Everyone else he just beat the shit out of and the grenade guy was his own fault.

@@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps what I mean here is he is learning to be a better Sup. When he fought with Zod, still unskilled, their fight destroyed many buildings, led to many death of ppl inside. In MoS, he was just trading punch with Zod and fought to outer space. Also Zod was the one who pushed Sup to space. In BvS, he intentionally flied to and pushed Zod Doom to outer space. He kept punching ZD further and further and all of those are to make sure ZD wouldn't be close to the city. Get it now?
@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps
@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps 3 года назад
@@meep-4272 Yes, the trading punches led to many buildings getting destroyed since Clark (staying in Zod's face since he'd sworn to kill everybody) wasn't trying to kill Zod, he was trying to knock him unconscious (despite not knowing how to fight well) and tried to manuever them away from the city but Zod wasn't fooled. You are only half-right that Zod pushed them up to space, he did the initial push but Clark immediately grapples with him and they're _spinning_ up to orbit then Clark hurls Zod outwards but it's pointless since Zod can already fly by that point.

But still very incoherent in parts. Doomsday plan makes no sense, especially if Batman managed to kill Sups. Doomsday makes no sense without it either - he kills Sups, now what? Whole Superman investigating Batman and getting angrier serves zero purpose - he only attacked him when being blackmailed, so Lex didn't have to do anything to Superman, just take his mother and tell him, what to do like he did. And Batan didn't need it either, he was angry already, whole thing was about getting Kryptonite. Martha doesn't work at all, Batman has to be mentally unstable and obsessed with his mother, instead we see him grieving for his parents like you do when they are killed when you were a child, he's also justifiably angry at Superman. If Batmans beaten those who kill mothers of wives to the inch of their lives, he would be unstable for Martha to work. If he trembled and stumbled at every mention of mothers of Marthas or family, it would have worked. If he saw nightmares throughout the movie about his parents it would have probably worked. But it's still disjointed and doesn't work at all.

Batman mentions fear a lot and that’s what this (IMO outstanding) film is about: fear. Look at how afraid the powerful are when their power is surpassed. “That’s how it starts: the fever, the rage, the feeling of powerlessness that turns good men cruel.” Alfred is, in a way, referring not only to Bruce (a genius master martial artist billionaire), but Lex (a genius, egotistic billionaire), and mankind (the used-to-be dominant species on Earth) Each of those groups/people were, in their minds, the apex predators of their societies. And with Superman around, all of their skills, muscles, money, and power mean virtually nothing. It’s nice to imagine that we’d just be taking selfie’s on 5th Avenue with immortal Norse gods but humanity, in this film, is going through a real identity crisis. And Clark is trying to navigate himself in a world that...kinda won’t LET him be a hero. If the movie seems “grey” it’s because this is how humanity would react, if not worse.
@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps
@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps 3 года назад
Yes. Bruce Wayne wants the Batman to "strike fear into a cowardly and superstitious lot" (almost like a dark god) while Clark wants Superman to inspire hope and good will in all and is deeply troubled being feared and worshipped almost like a deity. So they practically start out seeing eachother as sabotaging their own life's work. _"And with Superman around, all of their skills, muscles, money and power mean virtually nothing."_ And I disagree with them on that point. It's always been Clark's argument that no one knows what Superman and Lex Luthor could have done for mankind working together from the start. This is later shown with the Justice League satellite HQ, that's not something Clark Kent just tinkers together on his own at superspeed like he would in the Silver Age comics where he was kind of limitlessly powerful in every way.

This is a bitter pill to swallow, while we imagine heroes will be celebrated, and cheered humanity rarely works like that. Batman v Superman is what happens when two people who have been watching and reading fake/inaccurate news engineered about them eventually meet. A true reflection of our current society where groups of people are tethering on hate for each other based on our 24hr news cycles. I take a cautionary tale in that. I like that the DCEU doesn't paint humanity as constant victims of invasions and destroyers, these people are active contributors to the destruction of their society.

This cut of the movie actually rearranges some scenes too. I will always remember the scenes at Lex Corp with the government folks always confused me in the theatrical cut. Because, in the theatrical cut, you get the scene where he meets them and talks about wanting to import the rock, then it cuts away and we see some completely unrelated scenes. Then we get the scene where the government guy asks Lex what he wants, and Lex asks for access to the crashed ship, and Zod's body. It feels like there's a chunk of time between those two scenes, which makes the movie's timeline feel messy and confusing. But in the Ultimate Edition, those two scenes are back to back. It's literally one sequence. You even see Holly Hunter walking away in the start of the second scene, so it's obvious that those two scenes are supposed to take place one after the other. It does wonders for making the story flow in a cohesive way. Honestly, if ever there was an appropriate time to call something "definitive" this was the time to do it. The Ultimate Edition seriously devalues the theatrical cut simply by being more cohesive and easy to follow. Of course, the movie still has to be your cup of tea for you to enjoy it. But the fact of the matter is that the theatrical cut was a muddled mess, and honestly deserved to be so divisive among fans and critics.

The way I always took the Martha scene was that Batman always viewed Superman as an alien, a thing. So when he starts begging for him to save “Martha”, it gives him pause. Then once Lois explains that Martha is Superman’s mother’s name, Batman realises that while Superman may be an alien he was raised as a human, by humans. So if he actively goes out of his way to kill Superman, he’d be no better than the man who killed his parents*. The one thing I will say, I wish they had another excuse to explain Batman’s actions in this movie. It’s heavily implied that Lex knows that Batman is Bruce Wayne, so why not take it a step further by having Lex use Scarecrow’s Fear Gas on him making Batman more unstable than usual, with his mother’s death in particular playing on his mind. Maybe even take it a step further by explaining that Robin’s death was immediately before the Metropolis attack, so that’s also playing on his mind. *I think this Batman justifies the casualties he causes as “they willingly put themselves in my way, but so long as I don’t go out of my way to kill them then my conscience is clear”. He put Superman into that position, and went out of his way to get him there, so if he killed him then he absolutely would have been, without question, a murderer. Last note: I think Doomsday was Lex’s backup plan. Just in case they don’t kill each other.

I think it would help a lot of people's perspectives if they didn't go into this film with a pre-conceived notion of what Batman should be. He is introduced as the villain of the story. His arc is that he has his faith in humanity restored and becomes the good Batman he was before. That's what his intro monologue was about. How there used to be diamond abolutes (no killing) but it was all a beautiful lie. He went from "How many good guys are left? How many stay that way?" to "Men are still good." He makes a promise to be better on Clark's grave. The story Snyder is telling was supposed to be a 5-film arc. Man of Steel, BvS, JL1-3. He was never trying retell the same story of the comics. Literally every film is a commentary on our society. Man of Steel was about how we would react to the introduction of a being like Superman. BvS was about how we would react to the aftermath of MoS and how politics/religion/etc would be affected by the existence of Superman. By the end of BvS, like Eric says, half the world worships him as god. Half hates him for being a destructive alien. But then he dies. The world was so busy about his existence, they didn't think about how much they need him. So in JL, we will see how the world mourns and regrets their behavior. That's what i gather at least. Zack is telling his own story and using comics for inspirations. In my opinion, you aren't supposed to feel heartbreak for Superman's death (at least as much as Tony dying or something.) His death is used to tell a bigger story than just one character. It has a purpose that is very much necessary to progress Clark's journey to becoming the Superman we all know. The world rejected him. They lost him. And they're granted a second chance when he comes back. When that happens, i think he will be the hero everybody looks up at and smiles. It will feel earned. This is all just my take on it. I hope you guys read this and find your own conclusions :)

Agreed. All these people who were confused as to why Batman was so violent and killing bad guys or not caring if they died is baffling to me. The movie explains this when Bruce says to Alfred the lines about 20 years in Gotham and criminals are like weeds. Plus you see plainly that Joker has killed Robin. It doesn’t matter which Robin it was. It happened most likely at a time when Batman refused to kill Joker. By letting him live, Batman essentially let Joker kill Robin. He is clearly fed up with fighting a losing battle against the Gotham criminal element that just seems to be endless. Now Superman exists and again, Bruce has lost an entire Wayne building and all his employees let. Bruce has snapped and sees this mission to eliminate this dangerous alien as his way to finally make a real difference. I do think there are many comic fans who are so versed in those stories and accustomed to the light, fun superhero movies that they literally are incapable of being open minded enough to see a different take on those characters. Granted, BvS could’ve been better and the trailers made it seem much more like an action film rather than the drama it was. However, I feel like it wasn’t really surprising after seeing Man of Steel which established that this was a grounded world rather than the typical fantasy that the world of regular humans would simply accept and celebrate a super powered alien as their hero after others of his kind attempted to destroy the planet.

@@ohnofan Yep BvS is definitely slower paced than Man of Steel and the BvS trailers. But like you said, that should be expected by now.

I love these discussions where someone dislikes the movie or show. The debates add so much more to the videos than everyone just agreeing on how good something is in my opinion.

The extended cut is defiantly the superior cut of this movie. It makes more since then the original cut.

People don’t notice that this whole movie is Batman vs Superman not just the fight. People have to read between the lines. The fight just comes because of Batman and lex

Exactly! Lex was 5 steps ahead of everyone and planned the whole entire thing and wanted Bruce & Clark to do exactly what they did.

44:43 Mark! Hmm. In war movies the man with the flamethrower either explodes or catchs on fire, when his fuel tanks are shot! 💥

Bruce thought of Supermans parents as alien but when he see's Lois Lane, a human who cares for Superman, telling Batman that Superman's mothers name is Martha. It humanises Superman in Bruce's eyes.

I love this movie and I’ve been waiting for this reaction!

The best reasoning I can think of for the Martha scene is that bruce saw superman as an alien completely overlooking the fact that he was earth grown, I loved the duality bruce built in his mind about Clark and once Clark begs him to save Martha it broke through to bruce that Clark really is a being capable of love and connection not just an "overseer who bends for no one". That's just my take and reasoning for the scene I still maintain it wouldve have been easier for fans to cope with the Martha scene if Bruce kept on beating superman while he asked about Martha.

But literally just before that scene, Bruce talks about what Clark's parents said to Clark when he was young. It's strange that the thought of Superman having parents would change anything after that
@bluestratos1901
@bluestratos1901 3 года назад
@@mlgnerd13 to me it was that bruce felt his parents indulged Clark with delusions of grandeur as the savior of earth telling him "that you mean something" combining the line when bruce says "you're not brave, men are brave" and I also feel that somehow bruce knew the zod event was in fact Clark's fault for sending the beacon causing the sword of Rao to find earth.

one thing we can agree on snyderverse is the way they show superman's physicality i.e shockwave punches, super speed,sonic boom and even after a huge fight superman never looks tired. there is nothing like that in mcu.
