I always figured they were just there because a demolition crew tore them out of the walls and just dropped them down the stairwell so they would be in one convenient location, and could be pulled out and the metal sold for scrap before the building was knocked down.

Honestly, it would have worked better if Superman had just said "my mother." I can't see why it wouldn't have had the same effect, and it would be a far more natural thing for him to say. I don't think the line would get the hate it does if he'd said that instead either. People mock "you're letting him kill Martha!" because it seems so contrived -- which it is. Clark doesn't call his mother by her first name, and why would Bruce know who Martha is? But "you're letting him kill my mother!" would be the most natural thing in the world for Clark to say under the circumstances as a desperate last-second plea, and should work just fine to pierce through the wall of rage Bruce has built up, and appeal to him as someone who had his own mother taken from him by a murderer.

@@mattyboy59 he changed after hearing “it’s his mother’s name”. That’s when he remembered his mother and how he became Batman after somebody killed her. He was now a killer, the opposite of the original idea of Batman. He was killing another kid. Another Bruce Wayne.

@@mattyboy59 It’s not which name it is. Batman gets confused by the Martha name because he thinks Superman is playing some trick. It’s when Lois Lane arrives that explains that Superman has a mother and she’s being kidnapped that Batman realizes what he’s done.

Batman looked as confused as the audience as to why this matters at all.

this movie literally never made any sense to me.

“And I never understood why” Did you miss the fact that whole premise of fight was idiotic? Why did they get into a fight? Because apparently Superman couldn’t say a simple sequence of words - “Lex is blackmailing me to fight you”, and instead kept babbling - “Stop…. you must listen” , “you don’t understand”, “if I wanted it, you would be dead already”. Fight itself was good. But it’s like writers started with - “we somehow have to show them fight, we don’t really care about a compelling story writing that gets us there” Comic book had a clear understanding of characters and they both chose to be on opposite sides. There was no “miscommunication” Same thing with Superman’s death. After saving Louis lane, Superman could have gotten away from the scene, told Wonder Woman - “I will fight him and keep doomsday busy, while you go grab that kryptonite spear and impale doomsday” Writers knew basic points - “we need to show Batman vs Superman fight, we need to have all 3 superheroes fight doomsday, and we need to show Superman die” ….. but never bothered to come up with a good way of getting to those points.

He could have, but he didn't. He underestimated Batman and almost costed him his life.
