I like lanterns too! Your Moroccan one is gorgeous. I am trying to go the other way and reduce the disposable batteries that head to the landfills. I've bought a bunch of LED candles in the thrift stores for ~$1 each and I have some 12v LED strips. Based on WLED on an ESP8266 for the fun lighting effects. VanOaks Prop has a couple wiring ideas that I am going to use. He uses 2 pin landscaping wire for his outdoor props and he used an RCA jack in the past which I can see as a good option for indoor decorations. One change I might make is that instead of RCA I might just use the barrel jacks that are everywhere since most consumer routers run off 12v 1A. Combined with your bell wire ethernet cable, of course. :D

Great idea. I’ve switched to rechargeable batteries in all of mine, but being that I only use these lights on occasion, each set lasts over a year before needing to be recharged. Was thinking about working out a solar version of these somehow for outside that could run year round when the sun goes down.

This is super helpful. I never knew those bulbs stepped the voltage down that much. FYI, 'bell wire' for a doorbell is solid wire, prone to breaking, and better suited for AC, which is what the doorbell runs on (18-24vac). You should use stranded wire for low-voltage DC, the current flows through the wire differently than AC. It's also less likely to break.

@@BurkeMakesStuff, I love this little project because I can make lanterns for my deck or for camping that set a mood and are completely safe and portable. They can be placed in trees or behind fabric and there's no danger of fire. I live in Sonoma County and we've had more than enough fires over the last three years. This is wonderful idea and I'm so glad you answered my comment and brought my attention back to this project. Summer is on it's way and I'd like to have some outdoor lighting for the evenings. If someone ran two pairs of AAs in parallel where the voltage would still be 3v but the Ah rating would be double, would that simply increase battery life, or would it cause additional heat, or both? I'll share my experience. I got the bulbs, and they looked exactly the same. I opened them, and noticed that the led unit was soldered directly into the circuit board. I removed the circuit board with soldering iron, and replaced it with my own wires. 2 batteries did nothing, with three there was a faint glimmer, and with 4 batteries it kind of worked. I added an adjustable dc-dc step-up booster and cranked voltage to 7v, and finally got the leds to glow brightly. Next I'm gonna tinker my own lanterns.
