Battery Preconditioning On My Genesis GV60 Rocks! Here's How And Why To Use It

Join Dave as he tests out battery pre-conditioning on his Genesis GV60. Why does one need this? How does it work? What are the benefits? It’s important to note that if you try to precondition the battery with an SOC less a than 20%, the car won’t invoke the warm up session in order to conserve energy.

Thank you this was all very interesting as I do have a GV 60 and I have never been able to see the pre -conditioning working yet I have spoken to them at the dealership also we checked to see if it was set up for it and it was but still nothing, I will call Genesis direct next. I like the fact you have the OBD connected in your car I will order one today thanks for all the tips.

Driving from Chicago to Rockford in 20 degree F conditions, I decided my Model Y could use a supercharge as it would be sitting out in the cold again before I drove it home. So I only set my destination to the supercharger 5 minutes before I got there, and preconditioning wasn't optimal. Consequently my Y only charged at 55, with a note on the screen that the battery was cold and preconditioning. Since I normally charge in my garage, I didn't know how long it took to warm the battery, but will know better next time.

Love the careful methodology. It’s almost like the folks that made and sold this car ought to be doing this work and help explain it to customers. I mean it does make for awesome content for you, and it’s fun to watch for us, but what does it say about Genesis (and Hyundai and Kia) that you’re in the trenches helping everyone understand the complexities involved for this issue? And as you rightly point out this isn’t a good look for EA which is living down to its current reputation. That car definitely should be pulling 170 kW at the SOC levels you were at and maxing out that 150 kW EA unit.

I've done the yo-yo with thing before with EV6. and my EV6 does have the "Conditioning" (2023 brand spanking new GT-Line, Matte grey!) Love it so far! :) it would be nice to know how much energy it will use up (and I'm assuming the colder it is, the more energy it'll require). Also, I would have wanted to see this done at a lower state of charge (5%-10% or lower, which is what I'd get to a charger when I DC fast charge on road trips, since most the time I"m charging to 70%-80)% on level 2 at home). But, thanks for the VIdeo; been enjoying your channel! From what Kyle says, sounds like you're like me buying & Selling cars all the time :) (I currently have like 2 cars for sale, and just sold a Fairly new 2022 MOdel Y)

I'd like to see preconditioning available down to 10%, giving me around 25 miles of range in 8C conditions (without preconditioning) to find a second charger if the original destination was down. (I don't want to push my luck by driving beyond 0% SOC.)

The minimum cell temperature has to be 24°C for the GV60 to charge optimally
@dconner9
@dconner9 Год назад
So if preconditioning is set to kick off when temp hits 21, this leaves room for the battery to warm up to 24 while charging which does make sense. Do you mind if I ask what your testing source is about the very specific claim of 24? Thanks for watching
@Scrap-press
@Scrap-press Год назад
@@dconner9 I did my own tests :). What i found is when i arrive with 24 to 25° then I'm getting those 240kw. 15 and 20° have been the other triggers to get somewhat decent kws. Idk maybe they calibrated the EU version differently from the US

My experience is that the EA stations themselves are hampered in delivering their max by the use of the other towers at the station. I have seen a max of pulling 238 on a 350 in very moderate temperatures, i.e. you don't have control of all the variables. EA itself is a variable regardless of the KW rating.

Hey Dave. Did you know this comes up as a top result for how do I precondition my gv60 battery for charging with DC? Unfortunately it's 24 minutes long, at 1:20 I saw there's a setting I've already used. And reading the comments I see that the car needs to use it's onboard navigation to a charger to actually kick in. I didn't watch the rest but I hope everyone agrees that there should just be a button "precondition" somewhere with a countdown to when it's ready. Why would I have to find the charger in the map? Why use the map at all? I use Android Auto, in sure others use iPhone, adjust always better. Today's case: I'm at a Costco, going to a charger I know nearby, but it won't navigate there. It hasn't moved, it's knows it's there, it's my destination, but apparently the maps are out of date.. but I can't download an update before I get there, it's behind the queue of a big firmware update. Even if I could I shouldn't have to. I'm only looking to precondition, that should be something possible to initiate with the UI or a voice command. Regardless, let's say I arrive and have to wait 45 minutes to start charging, how do I tell it to keep itself ready? Again, an explicit command would work better. A button might be best.

Imho, Another Preconditioning test @ 10% soc is needed @ another station.
@dconner9
@dconner9 Год назад
Preconditioning won’t invoke with SOC less than 20%. Agree another test with a working charger would show much better results. Kyle showed this with his recent test of Battery preconditioning of an IONIQ5 on our Reviews channel.

Thanks for the info sounds like that EA location needs to get preconditioned entirely

Tesla's don't need apps and adapters to display charger info and battery temps. After update 2023.2.10 the new service menu display shows ccs station info volts and amps and battery temps.

I can back this up. I got my Ioniq 5 in December (2023) and didn't know that I needed to activate preconditioning and then navigate to a POI using the native navigator. At 8C, my Ioniq only pulled 46kW during my first charging session at an ABB 150kW charger. A couple of days later, with the same weather conditions but with preconditioning set up, it immediately pulled 150kW from an identical ABB 150kW charger.

Dave… sorry to say, but Kathy is right: you really do tend to tell a long story, but… without making it shorter. I'd say that you'd only see the faster charge rate with a 350kW charger. And it sounds to me like the whole site is having problems, with all the chargers.

I do like the icon used for indicating preconditioning is on vs the ionq5’s. The snowflake is kind of odd in Hyundai’s version. Stinks that you couldn’t pull more and get a proper test in.

I do. Just choose a DC location from the car’s navigation and the car will precondition the battery. Very simple and very similar to Tesla. Thanks for watching!

One little correction. Pre conditioning a battery allows greater power input(charge rate). Total energy input is not determined by pre conditioning. 3:02
