Come on timpani... really?!?! I played this for three years beginning my sophomore year of HS; I'm very familiar with this piece and all the nuances of ALL of the parts (I've studied the entire score) and I'm well aware that this is not a walk in the park- especially for the timpani, but it gives you the chance to SHINE! Sadly, no such thing happened for this timpanist- multiple mistakes (even in the easiest sections), and the solo was just a sloppy blur... What an embarrassment- this is difficult to watch- especially with the rest of your ensemble doing such a marvelous job! At least your instruments are nicely tuned! Good job on that- this is a crucial component that is often ignored by younger players. Keep working on it- as in: PRACTICE it! (First: start by working on your basics & style in general- don't beat the notes into the drums, draw the sound OUT by quickly bouncing the mallet off the drum allowing it to reverberate. If you're going to do something, why not do it right, and well- with style & emotion?! There are plenty of great instructional/tutorial videos here. Also watch some performances of professionals here on YT- there are tons of marvelous, inspiring examples!) Start very slowly with a metronome, get each note down- played perfectly in time with the right accents & emphasis- then gradually speed up the metronome until you can do it in your sleep flawlessly significantly faster than it would ever be performed. And for goodness's sake: Use the correct sticks/mallets for the various sections (you'll need 3 pairs: extra soft, medium and hard)!!!
Well sometimes Drummers mess up. Trust me Ik that I've been playing this piece for 4 years the timpanist is fine. The director is to blame too. But the timpanist is fine.
I know this comment is 2 years old but i was in this band and we practiced this piece maybe 4 whole times lmao this was really just a fairwell to our director as a full program performance since he was moving to texas (and none of the percussionists really wanted to play timpani because they were lazy so someone who doesnt really ever play timpani was playing it lmao) tdlr: it's a full program high school band performance sometimes you can't blame the players for not caring enough lmao
@@MrTheRuffles Thank you for explaining the circumstances! As I said, the rest of you guys played nicely, especially for only a handful of performances. It's definitely clear he didn't give a shit... LOL
