This video was produced using the PC game, Mount & Blade Warband, developed by TaleWorlds Entertainment, and Medieval II Total War, by the Creative Assembly. Battle map animations were made in MS paint and Windows movie maker. Gameplay recordings captured with MSI Afterburner.
I mistakenly referred to Charles d'Albret as the Dauphin of France (heir apparent to the French throne), however he was not the dauphin. The dauphin, during the Battle of Agincourt, was actually Charles VII of France, who was not present at the battle.

Archers carried a mallet and an iron spike called an Odd Bodkin. It is placed on the helmet or face of a downed knight and driven through into the skull. The old English exclamation of, "Odds Bodkins", refers to this method of killing an enemy.

A short dagger called a misericord was used by the English to dispatch the fallen French knights. When a Knight lay face up or on his side it was only a matter of lifting his visor and stabbing through the eye and stirring the brain. Grotesquely brutal work for men innured to the atrocious hideous reality of medieval warfare.

As an real English bowman (long bow for field archery )iv read all the stories and this reconstruction really brings home the chaos and brutality of the battle . The build up to this near catastrophic campaign by the English is also amazing ,the logistics of bringing all the men horses arrows bows food and how it was paid for is another story in itself.

You'd think the French would learn after Crecy and Poitiers ? The French never had Archers but in England it was compulsory to practice with the bow. At Crecy the British were 7000 against 30,000 French including Genoese crossbow men. The French raised the red flag (no mercy, no hostages). The British slaughtered them and mostly with the long bow.

Hand to hand, face to face, hacking someone down with a sword or axe - the blood, the gore, the screams....we're weak and pathetic specimens compared with these men. And, can you imagine, today, the leader of the country fighting in the front rank during a war!

Do you like, sitting alone in a hole while grenades rain down on you and MG fire blocking every inch of the field, more? Yes hand to hand is brutal but you see your enemy and you have people aside you wich you can trust and who trust you. The horror of war only starts when projectiles rain down on you or your formation breaks and the other side winns and starts slaughter your fleeing side. In modern warfare you never know if you get the next second killed by someone thousands of miles away or from a sniper or bomb. I think that is way more horrible than fighting hand to hand in an melee infantry formation.

Every Sunday after church 8yrs old and over you practices using the long bow. This was basically mandatory. The War Bow was bigger, made from yew trees usually growing in church grounds (still found today in English church grounds). The war bow had much greater power able to pierce through some armour. It could fire 5x faster than a war cross bow. Hence the military successes of the British. The V sign stems from these wars as the French would cut off the two fingers from bow men. The Baggage train had women and children in it which the French killed discriminatly, hence Henry V reaction to eliminate many of the prisoners...

Their retinue of squires, men at arms and liegemen carried their lord's coat on banners/standards and a smaller version of their lord's coa on their heart or centre area of their tabbard and colours on their shields.

@@amadbiscuit Biscuit, you are a genius. My only criticism is that your narration needs work. And I suggest you do Google searches on the names of the individuals you point out. Your pronunciation is understandable, of course. Unless you're familiar with French pronunciation and the odd English pronunciation of names such as Warwick (pronounced "War ick"), you will not have known that "St. Denis" is rendered "sahn denee". But you've done a superb job of animation. The archers, though, began their volleys shooting at about a 45 degree angle upward and only slowly angled downward, as the targets came closer. The longbow was quite capable of killing unarmored flesh at over 200 yards.

There's many historical eye witness accounts of this battle. What I thought was interesting in particular is that the English Longbow and the bodkin tip could not penetrate the armor worn by the French Knights as the arrows simply broke on impact and were deflected away. It has been suggested then that the loss of the French Knights was due to the muddy terrain. As the horses were killed, they often fell on their riders, suffocating them in the mud. Very few of the French were actually killed by arrows, and those that were had been shot from the flanking archers, the arrows penetrating the sides and backs of the French Knights were the armor was thinnest.
@PaulHere1953
@PaulHere1953 2 года назад
Yes, I understood that the french were stuck in the mud, unable to move, whilst the English, with light dressing, daggers and other weapons, pounced on them from the woods, on their flanks and stuck daggers in any holes that could be found in the french armour; horrid thought. I also thought the number of french dead was far higher, but how many is still too many and whoever was killed, on both sides, was someone’s son.

Enjoyed your video greatly. I knew very little about the battle itself. I would be greatly interested in the logistics and the supply of the army, the production of the armory... An archer could shoot 6 arrows per minute. They were placed in three rows: alternating rows shooting, kneeling, loading, shooting... up down up down... A constant rain of arrows. The tip of the arrow could get a little wax, so that on impact it did not bounce of the armour so easily and was more likely to penetrate it... A spare string was kept under the cap to keep it dry and prevent it from getting soggy...

Hi, you say that the English were pushed back, but I think you will find that the majority of the English men at arms initially deliberately took a pace or two back just as the French first battle hit as the dismounted French knights main initial weapon was the cut down lance which would have been thrust at the enemy in a final rush , so by stepping back you unbalance the very tired enemy who are all but wading in mud and then you step forward for the kill, the main method was to work with your sworn "brother in arms", one to pull the enemy off balance while the other delivered the killing blow, when the first rank goes down it provides a barrier that works against the attackers repeat as often a necessary .

What you fail to grasp is that archers at the time were elite troops. Well armoured and armed. They were NOT the melee pushovers modern games make them out to be. Also, while long range volleys were a thing, the archers were deadliest at point blank range. Advancing on foot against these archers was pretty much suicide. Even without mud up to your knees. Cavalry could close quickly and simply run them over with their horse. That is why archers put up stakes or were interspaced with pikemen. There were usually also skirmishers in their lines to resupply them with arrows and kill injured attackers with poignards etc.

A person is crowned, not coronated. Also, Henry chose the battleground wisely - the terribly muddy field and his flanks were protected by the trees. The English archers shot so many arrows that they ran out and had to go out in the field to retrieve spent arrows to be able to keep firing. You mentioned a few of the nobles who died on the English side, but an entire generation of French nobility was basically wiped out in the carnage. Henry's decision to execute the prisoners was very controversial and remains so today. Archers were basically the artillery of their day. Finally, St. Dennis is how we would pronounce it, but the French would have said "San Dennee", which was their battle cry.

Under the rules of chivalry a knight could expect to be ransomed if yielding in battle, Henry could not spare men to guard them in his rear so he ordered them killed. This was not a popular decision because basically his own knights and men at arms lost fortunes.
@johnolsen2841
@johnolsen2841 2 года назад
It is not clear why Henry did this. But it is settled that he did not do so in response to the "killing of the boys in the luggage" as that occurred well behind the action. Henry may have thought that the line of Frenchmen that he saw coming was a new contingent of fresh men at arms and, as he had no reserves at that point, such a threat could have reversed the tide of battle. He ordered his archers to dispatch the prisoners and many refused to do so, but that may have been a reluctance to kill possible ransomees more than from a feeling of mercy. He did manage to get some men to do the deed.

The blazon of Henry's coat of arms is incorrect. The number of fleur de lis in the French quartering had been reduced to three in 1405, as you correctly show in your listing. Also Charles D'Albret was not the Dauphin but the Constance of France. The rest was good though.
@amadbiscuit
@amadbiscuit 3 года назад
Thanks for your comment. Yes, the correction about the Dauphin is included in the video description. Also, as you mentioned, yes, there are several inaccuracies with the heraldry in this one. I may in the future make another Agincourt video with Bannerlord and have the proper coat of arms for all the lords. I made a related video on Patay 1429 which I think has more attention to detail as far as the heraldry. I am also working on a video for the Battle of Poitiers, 1356.

According to Wikipedia : "the chronicler Jean de Wavrin, contemporary of the battle of Agincourt, reported that Henry V mentioned in a pre-battle speech that the French were said to be THREATENING to cut off three fingers (not two) from captured English bowmen. Wielding an English longbow is best done with three fingers. Neither Wavrin nor any contemporary author reported the threat was ever carried out after that nor other battles"

@@pbmltd9023 Nope, that's a myth that was spawned in the 1990s. The French would just generally kill them as they regarded them as 'gente de nul valeur', meaning not worth a ransom, people of such low class. But if not, then they might cut of THREE fingers, as that was used to fire longbows. The 'two fingered salute' connection to the 100 Years War is a complete myth.

No painkillers? Not 100% correct. I would think that Henry's physicians would certainly have opium on hand in the form of dwale (he was a prince afterall). The recipe for the concoction varies throughout the centuries but a key ingredient was poppy seed. They would certainly have to be cautious in it's application however. Too much would prove just as lethal as the arrowhead.
