The Battle of Bouvines was fought on 27 July 1214 near the town of Bouvines in the County of Flanders. It was the concluding battle of the Anglo-French War of 1213-1214. A French army of approximately 7,000 men commanded by King Philip Augustus defeated an Allied army of approximately 9,000 men commanded by Holy Roman Emperor Otto IV.
In early 1214, a coalition was assembled against King Philip Augustus of France, consisting of Otto IV, King John of England, Count Ferrand of Flanders, Count Renaud of Boulogne, Duke Henry I of Brabant, Count William I of Holland, Duke Theobald I of Lorraine, and Duke Henry III of Limburg. Its objective was to reverse the conquests made by Philip earlier in his reign.
The resulting battle was a crushing French victory that dashed English and Flemish hopes of regaining their lost territories. Having lost all credibility as emperor following the battle, Otto IV was deposed by Pope Innocent III, marking Frederick II Hohenstaufen's accession to the Imperial throne. King John was compelled to hand over Anjou, the ancient patrimony of the Angevin kings of England, to Philip in a peace settlement. This confirmed the collapse of the Angevin Empire.
The disaster at Bouvines forever altered the political situation in England, as John was so weakened that his discontented barons forced him to agree to the Magna Carta in 1215. Counts Ferrand, Renaud and Longespee were captured and imprisoned.
The balance of power shifted; Philip achieved remarkable success in the expansion of his realm and by the end of his reign, in 1223, and laid the foundations for the era of Capetian prominence in Europe which followed and marked much of the Late Middle Ages.

This channel is way too underrated. This topic is really interesting and very niche, and this is a fascinating period of history but unfortunately there isn't enough good presentation of it in such a format. Thanks for making these, they're amazing. Hope you cover more events from the middle ages.

You are surely one of the few to name the different regions, Counties and Duchies in feudal logic, where others are content to speak of France, England or Germany as if it were today .

Interesting fact: the most recent research by historians such as Dominique Barthélémy assumes for a number of reasons that the troops were not lined up in battle order as we see in the representations. In reality, period sources tell us of arrivals in small quantities. The entire army had to cross the bridge again. First of all, the French rear guard is attacked. She gradually receives reinforcements of infantrymen and knights This is what the chroniclers of the time call "the right wing" A remaining part of the army (the main knights of the king and the sovereign himself as well as a large quantity of pedestrians) arrive next, which will constitute a large left wing There are troops who simply have not arrived. Having represented the army in battle order is quite simply a vision of the people of the 19th century to correspond to their ideas, without having analyzed the conditions of the battle, the stories...

Exactly. Medieval warfare just didn’t work that way. People imagine they just constantly fought each other in LOTR-esque epic battles, but in reality, most of medieval war consisted of skirmishes, raids, and sieges throughout the countryside. That’s also why medieval wars are much more destructive since they did not concentrate the fighting in one relatively small battle field, violence occurred on a much wider scale throughout the entire territory in question.

0:47 why does a 14-year-old have a full grown beard?
@amadbiscuit

Testosterone levels have been declining in men for almost a century. If we extrapolate this trend back to medieval times, for all we know, the average medieval 14 year old may have been Arnold Schwarzenegger compared to today.

Would already make a noticeable difference if big city dwellers stopped drinking & cooking with the arsenic, fluoride & estrogene-infused tap water... 🤔

@@amadbiscuit Testosterone isn’t the only factor in beard growth, in fact it’s only indirectly related.
