Videos like this are why HistoryMarche is probably the #1 history channel on youtube, which is saying something. Compare the sheer bulk of content in this video to your rivals, there's no competition. Kings and Generals are #2 I'd say, and their Sun Ce video the other day had a lot of information to be fair, but other than that it's been a while since they've put out a video where you feel like you've been bombarded with knowledge (like you did with Targoviste, Emden, Poitiers and now this; they're like mini-movies, where I actually get excited for their journeys, even supporting them, as opposed to just watching something abstractly). I practically cheered when Mihai had them fleeing. Amazing how the hierarchy changes, first BazBattles was king with his crusader/Alexander videos, then he forgot all of that and did boring Japanese/WW2 navy videos, then K&G assumed the mantle before diluting their work by adopting the cheap styles of their vassals (and Game of Thrones history videos?? The fuck...), and now HistoryMarche ruthlessly took the throne. I really hope that you stay consistent/don't cop out like those guys, because you're crushing it. Maybe more content if possible, but if that compromises the quality then sod the idea.

It sure was a tug of war. Both generals were similar in quality. Michael had the home-ground advantage + better troops. Sinan had the numbers, but attacked a well entrenched enemy with weaker troops, as Ottoman best troops were in Hungary.

He was a very short lived character in Romanian history. He was assassinated by the Austrian aristocracy because of his ambition to conquer Transylvania. It's curious to consider how it would have affected regional history if his death wouldn't have been premature. He would have bough the entirety of modern day Romania and Moldova under Austrian rule, which would have consolidated the empire's position in the east, or he could have eventually broke away from the empire and formed a new regional power in the area.

@@dawn-blade Romanians, where should i start, well i could start that the rral Romanians that are interested in their history are very proud, they are descands of the ancient Dacians and the people of the Roman Empire but sadly a lot of westerners thinks they are gypsies because of the gypsy minority moving out of Romania with Romanian passports and some gypsies calls themselves romani wich may confuse someone but they are infact two completley different people, Romanians even had gypsies as their slaves from the 1700s to the 1800s. I am half Norwegian and half Romanian so can say that i love being part Romanian. Their folk costumes looks like the Ukrainian, Bulgarian, German etc. In the North Romanians can be really light skinned like germans with blonde hair and blue eyes and in the south they can look like Greeks brcause of the sun. That's atleast what i know but the majority of the Romanian people usually don't care like the rest of the world while some are filled with racism and hate not many👍

Military genius and a pragmatist. He won a battle against an enemy with a professional army of janissaries that is 7 times his size and with their best general leading them. Received virtually no support from his 'allies' and almost sacrificed his people with heavy taxes and serfdom in an effort to raise an army to fight the true threat. Why don't we ever hear more of this guy? He countered every Ottoman move and took every advantage he could to win the day.

Cause he ruined the wallachian economy, caused famine and put wallachia in a worse condition than it previously was. He was a great military leader but had no ability to rule. An impoverished wallachia led in a large part to the the continual decline of the balkan region and as you can see it still continues

Indeed, it was a true tug of war. Imo, both Sinan and Mihai were capable leaders, able to inspire their troops. The outcome of the battle was far from straightforward. I've had lots of help from Albert Weber with researching the geopolitics of the time so I could focus more on researching the battle itself. If you can read German I recommend his book "Corpus Draculianum". It's a stunning work of research on medieval Romanian history.

@@HistoryMarche Looking forward to it. Thank you for sharing your passion with the rest of the world. B/c of people like you I came to take an interest in my own history. Back in school Ancient History was the only one that captured my imagination. It's also interesting to discover how some facts might be different in nuance if not in essence. The way I remember it (during the communism) the emphasis was always on the fact that we were never conquered, which was (and probably still is) a source of great national pride. All the other facts were presented (paying tribute and the like) but I never thought back in the day that said independence was more of a formality than a reality.

Indeed, the communist narrative was glorifying Michael and his deeds, essentially presenting him as super-human. The reality was much different. He wasn't beloved by his people during his lifetime. Quite the opposite. He certainly was an effective military leader but he had very little time to revitalize the country and so he did what many other leaders did, he introduced harsh reforms which landed him in hot water with the population.

@@HistoryMarche Yeah, one of my biggest surprises as an adult was to discover that British people (or at least some of those I've encountered) think of Romania as siding with Hitler which, according to the way I remember it from school, was just a passing "hiccup" on our part due to the short lived influence of the Iron Guard. You can also imagine that the communists were not particularly happy w/ the royal family, no matter what they did. Who knows how many things that I think of as historical FACTS are wrong or, even if they aren't wrong, we don't all learn the same "historical facts" in school.

@@HistoryMarcheThank you for the amazing and well researched material! I must say, it is much more enlightening that the presentation in the Romanian textbooks we studied in schools. The facts they usually present (which are repeated and distilled over and over again, and exploited for various purposes) are from a very narrow, national perspective. Things are seldom properly set and presented in the larger, European frame. For example, I liked very much how you explained the strategic situation of the Ottoman-Austrian war, and the strategic importance of the Danube as logistical communication and supply route for the advancement of Ottomans into the central Europe. It may seem obvious, but few people are aware of the importance of waterways - especially when seen (naively) on a map they don't look like the most obvious or direct route. Even today their importance is supreme in many cases, but back in the time they were the equivalent of rail + motorway today.

Disdain of death, the Dacian legacy. Romanians are very individualistic and grumble, mock, loathe effective authority while often submitting to a central figure they endow with larger than life merits. But if you gather them and they invest themselves into achieving something it's hard to stop them. While it was possible, before technology radically changing everything, the farmer-soldiers villages, razesi for Moldova, mosneni for Valahia - especially towards the mountain areas- allowed the country to have, with some time needed to gather them, a larger and better prepared army than simply throwing in any able body weapon yielding man you can reach for. Not as good as the domn's or higher lords retinues they could compensate with larger number without being a simple mob. But in the 16th century this advantage fades away until it may became counterproductive faced with professional soldiers and raw firepower. Ioan voda cel Cumplit still manages to rally, in 1574, 20000 (according to Austrian source) infantrymen from the razesi and smashes the pretender, so the underlying defensive social structure is still there. Let's not forget Mihai needed a standing army in order to cover the territory at any moment and also needed an army capable of possible protracted offensive purposes too. Don't know how much good this shift in warfare doctrine did to Europe considering the slaughter will be plunged into when the 30 years war comes around, mainly fought by godless professional mercenaries. A warning for nowadays shift to mercenaries.

Sometimes we should be more disciplined. Anyway, we like being overcritical with ourselves in the same time with a tendency to over glorify events. We should be more applied, our enemies write history with precise goals, we waste occasions to show the truth with too much nonchalance.

Trivia Time: 1. For those interested, there is a Romanian movie from the 70s based on Michael the Brave's life. Its called Mihai Viteazul and its a two-parter. Its on RU-vid with English closed captions here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oxv6LfcfryA.html 2. The aforementioned movie is now used in American cinematography classes as an example on how to make a movie. Heck, even Steven Spielberg who liked it so much that he included a scene from it in E.T. 3. Also Captain John Smith of Pocahontas fame fought alongside Sigismund Bathory of Transylvania, Michael the Brave, then after his assassination, another Wallachian ruler called Radu Şerban (who was up against a Moldavian rival named Ieremia Movilă) during his early days. There is a rumor that the title of captain he earned from Michael would be the only title he would cherish for the rest of his life. 4. As for Sinan, legend has it that after falling down the bridge in the swampy marshes below, he lost his only two remaining teeth in the impact.

What a battle!!! What perseverance from both sides! Respect to Walachians, they were vastly outnumbered yet stood strong and won the day. As often than not the Turks gained the upper hand only due to numeric advantage. Walachians are Romanians. Wallachia is an exonym ( a name given by foreigners), while the inhabitants of this state called themselves „Români/ Romanians” and their country „Țara Românească” / The Romanian Country. And, further more, Țara Românească comes from the Latin words „Terra Romanorum” / The Land of the Romans. Until the 11th Century A.D. in the Byzantine letters and in other documents, the Romanians in the Danubian-Carpathian regions were called „and those Romans at the Danube”, even if the Roman Empire ruling there was long gone. The Romanians export a simi auto AKM to the states called the WASR10. I find that it is a good representation of the Romanian people themselves. Looked down upon, underestimated, considered mediocre, but is in fact hard as a coffin nail, dependable, and a sure shot. If things ever go south I will be toting Romanian steel.

Excellent work! Your channel is of the same quality as BazBattles and K&G. You are absolutely one of my favourite, and will keep an eye for notifications. Michael the Brave was such a badass. Never knew he was so close to Constantinopol. If only he had a proffesional army and the league would have helped march towards the capital during that early mommentum. That would’ve shifted the entire history as we know. Looking forward to part II .

It's strange how little support he received from the Holy League and Transylvania. Why didn't Transylvania's army either raid the fortresses on their western border and then combine their army with Mihai's? Rather than just send a few troops. Seems like they declared war nominally almost.

He was close but to take Constantinople is not easy it did have impressive city walls and I am sure quite a force protecting it. Not to forget the Turkish navy dominated the waters something that was a major weakness for the Byzantines when Constantinople fell. Also the Turks kicked out any one they felt might of shown treachery and opened the city gates.

I heard some saying that Romanians have a marginal history. But God knows how much my ancestors suffered. Pages of history who were written for eternity by Stephen the Great, Vlad the Impaler and Michael the Brave were not the only once. Please note that from the whole of Europe, Hungarians, Szekeli people, and Polish were the only ones who shed their blood with us. I believe the influence and importance of the wars fought in South Eastern Europe is severely underestimated and underappreciated in much of the rest of Europe. For centuries the Ottoman Empire was an entity far larger in size and definitely more powerful than any single force in Europe. Yet it was at least in part thanks to the exploits of largely unknown men like Michael (unknown outside of their home countries that is) that the Ottomans were never able to push into Europe much farther than the Balkans.

Toma Neagu Considering the fact that we had over 1000 princes during that period, not to mention the Greek rulers of the Phanariote period (1700), and one guy that even reigned for two days (forgot their name) plus another guy who happened to be inept and gay (Alexandru Iliaş), thats saying something. Not even Poland was this flip-floppy when it came to reigns. Heck during the 19th century two contrastingly incompatible parties united into a "monstrous coalition" to overthrow, probably one of the best "dictators" in existence named Alexandru Ioan Cuza (as in they actually did their job and greatly improved the lives of the common people, sth the elite hated and found too extreme since it affected their provileges), in favor of some German prince. And that German prince wanted the "dictator" back in the country but the other politicians protested. Only in Romania!

unu alin Indeed. Although out of all descendants only Carol II was the biggest royal turd. Ferdinand was the King of Greater Romania and did lots for the country. And if it weren't for King Mihai's coup, the rest of Moldavia would probably be today in Ukraine's hands and we probably wouldve been divided back in the 3 main states. Not to mention we avoided the Soviet genocide treatment Hungary, Poland and Bulgaria. Sadly cant say the same for the rapes. @@emilomnic316 Where did you get the 1000 figure from!? Even if you consider the time frame until our times, not only 1300-1600. It is far less than that, even when considering the reigns not the persons, some princes ruled 2-3-4 times (including Vlad Tepes, for instance). And there is no absolute rule, Moldova was governed 80 years in the 15th century by only 2 princes: Alexandru cel Bun for 32 years, Stefan cel Mare for 47. Stephen the Great succession was quite stable - Bogdan III 13 yrs, Stefanita 10, Petru Rares 11 (the first reign only). The most unstable was Muntenia/Valahia in the 16th century, not the least because it produced weaker rulers, either in terms of competence or legitimacy. Later, in the 17th century, you have Vasile Lupu who reigned for 21 years in Moldova. Or Matei Basarab for 22, Constantin Brancoveanu 26, in Muntenia (continuous reigns, not added years). All in all, Moldova was more stable than Muntenia/Valahia. Less exposed also. Even if the Tartars were closer they usually just raided, they didn't bring pretenders along. And there were no Phanariote princes between 1300-1600, only starting with the 18th century, just to clarify for anyone interested.

We suffered 500 years under the Turks, we finally got a country of our own in 1878 and had only 40 years to develop before WW1 and WW2 and then as a cherry on top we've been conquered by the Stalinist USSR. I wouldn't call this great but there is some greatness in surviving :). We are considered corrupt and backward but try bribing the Turks for 500yrs and stay morally un-corrupted. We have no cathedrals and great cities because we needed the money for the horses and bows to fight the tartars.....but at least there was no mosque built in the Romanian principalities..and this says a lot. Love for Austrians who cut our forests now :)

Also fun fact: Despite their official status as allies, Romanians sabotaged the Turks at the 2nd siege of Vienna and gave the Poles enough time to arrive. Done by a Byzantine descendant. As for the serbs here, never forget Baba Novak, one of Mihai's many right hand men.

Any empire had a habit of being brutal to its' conquered subjects in times of crisis. But yes you are correct in that Wallachia and Moldavia really fared poorly in this period.

16th century was tough, with less competent leaders, with Moldova, which was somehow less exposed, in decline too after Petru Rares lost southern Basarabia. Also, the military tactics and weapons changed the way warfare was carried. Both Mihai and, previously, Ioan the Terrible in Moldova understood the need to change to specialized soldiers. There were other brief attempts at modernizing the military - Petru Cercel, for instance, but didn't succeed. So the Romanian countries lost the qualitative parity and the former local organization that allowed flexibility was no longer efficient within a technological division of work society. Btw, Petru Cercel's son, Marcu, who was entitled to the crown, renounced to press claim and served under Mihai whom he recognized as eminently competent to rule the realm.

Trivia time (SPOILERS INCLUDED): - Sinan lost his remaining two teeth after being knocked off the bridge. According to the legend anyway. - Captain John Smith helped Mihai during his campaign. Yes THAT John Smith, Disney fans. Also the title of captain he first earned from Mihai himself left an everlasting impression for the rest of his life that he refused to be promoted to a higher rank. - One of Mihai's best men was a Serbian hajduk named Baba Novak. - There is a movie based around his life called Mihai Viteazul (in America it's The Last Crusade). Spielberg was a fan of it and even included a scene from it in ET. Plus the American Film Academy are using the movie as an example on how to make a film.

Very true. Just compare bosnia and serbia with croatia and slovenia. Even though they were one country at one point they differ economically. Because the first 2 were ruled by ottomans and the last 2 were ruled by austro-hungary.

Not really. It comes and goes. And depends from which perspective you look. 16th century was bad for Valahia and Moldova from a (relative) individual freedom perspective. The traditional free villages self ruling (almost) under traditional privileges bestowed by the domn were under constant threat. Yet, the Romanians condition in Transylvania was still worse than in the outer Carpathian principalities. Transylvania had German style towns, large, fortified, specialized in certain industries. But there was almost no place for Romanians there and not for many Hungarians either. Still, one of the measures Mihai took after he became ruler in Transylvania was to make sure the Romanian serfs are treated the same as the Hungarian serfs, because even in servitude some were worse treated than others. He didn't set them free but insured there was no further discrimination.

In many ways, from a frenchman perspective, this battle of Calugerani is very similar to our battle of Castillon (1453) at the end of the Hundred years war : two armies clashing with great disproportion of forces (englishmen and french allies > royal army of France), the attacker marching straight forward to the defender's lines, and canons playing the greater part, slaying a lot of ennemies.

As someone from Giurgiu I just have to say congrats on this superb documentary! Rest assured, these days nobody thinks Mihai was a tyrant for taxing the people so much for the war effort. He proved worthy through his heroic actions and achievements. I once spoke to a man cynical of Mihai because he left the Danube for the defense of the mountains, but he didn't realize how dangerously outnumbered Mihai was. And the fact that his struggle for freedom was a giant gamble is also often overlooked. Nevertheless, we hold him in high regard to this day and he shall forever be remembered as a national hero.

23:17 The walachian army pushes forward as if under a spell... Well that struck a nerve!😊 Very few people knew that this gesture of Mihai gained him "the brave" part of his name. The legend says that he took a war axe from one of his men and threw himself in the middle of the fight, wreaking havoc in the enemy line. That is why many statues of him in Romania depict him with an axe in his left hand... You could say that in my country we regard him as Richard the Lionheart of Romania...

@@ares1634 they didnt call him Lionheart for nothing. Read for example the battle of Jaffa. He was in the front of his men leading the assault on the beach, and on the streets and his charges in the later battle outside of the walls broke the morale of Saladin men who didnt want to face him in person on the battlefield...

@@viorelblaj4885 I think you didn't watch this documentary properly, to get tired of counting the monumental battles Michael won, against the biggest armies of his time. Did Richard conquer an entire defense line of fortresses, from the biggest power on earth and the biggest emperor to recognize him as ruler and be happy to let him keep whatever he got, just to stop destroying his armies? This man defeated the armies of 3 empires several times. In this respect Richard was no better than a captain of Michael the brave.

In the Romanian ballad ''Paşa Hassan'',Hassan is described as a weak general,while Michael as a brave one.In the ballad,Michael duels Hassan,which loses,but it's spared by Michael.After seeing this video,I realize that Hassan wasn't a weak general,but instead a brave one that fought alongside his troops.Awesome video btw!

@@thevoid3522 Actually, there is a historical truth to the ballad. Pasa Hassan was coming from the west with the Rumelian troops. These troops were eventually routed from the field by the end of the day as Hassan flees.

Near my native city in Romania there is a monument to honour another major battle of Michael the Great, the battle of Selimbar. He was a great fighter and defender of Europe.

Thank you for the reference. Really appreciate it! You might find Corpus Draculianum good for your project. It's in German, but you can use Google translate. It's a fantastic body of research about this period in Wallachian history. I'm still astonished at just how good it is and rich with information that you can't really find elsewhere. It's the work of a few professors that specialize in Romanian history. I highly recommend it.

I live in Romania. Eastern Europe paid the ultimate price. Our countries were destined to be poor from the moment of the Ottoman Empire's inception. All of the Balkans, together with Hungary and Poland. We were all wrecked by the Ottomans, and so, defending Europe made our countries remain poor, and behind Western Europe, which was getting rich with exploiting other countries, forever.

Wallachia was the name given to the region by foreigners. In actuality, the inhabitants called the principality Țara Rumuneasca (Țara Româneasca) which comes from the latin Terra Romanorum.
