@@Saeronor I'm not a history buff but I do enjoy learning about the previous battles/wars/politics from ages ago. I haven't spoiled myself with what happened at Cannae yet but I do know it's an epic battle.

Most accounts follow the classical view from Polybius. Some point out he had a patron and said he just made everything up. Of the two extremes, I tend to think Polybius's account is closer to the truth. But this view in this video is fascinating. It doesn't dispute Paulus being more cautious and Varro being more aggressive nor does it dispute much with the classical account on the actions taken. But it tries to point out both sides had a point. The rolling terrain was suited for the legions and if they holed up in the rough terrain, they would be straining their supply lines (food needs to be ported in) while Hannibal's logistics for that campaign season were solved by the capture of the depot. Paulus did have a senior command in illyria, but although it was militarily successful it ended in some scandals for other reasons. Varro's past was unknown, but he had to have had some military command to be elected. Something in him made many of the powerful Senators decide even though he had no prestigious family name he was worth backing. This view is probably even closer to the truth than the revisionist "Polybius made everything up"

@@MarouenAK completely different in but 2 things: commander name (approximately) and encirclement - Germans were invaders, Romans were not. Germans got encircled over a year or so that the battle lasted and their assault got stopped. They surrendered, most of them. Romans got hacked to bits. Germans never really had that massive superiority over enemy in Stalingrad.

You can't compare the overrated Alexander to Hannibal. Alexander only defeated an old and incompetent emperor Darius III who didn't even want to be an emperor and Alexander's army was built by his father and he had the resources of an entire nation. Hannibal was way better tactician/leader who did everything on his own. Add to that Hannibal's army never mutinied unlike Alexander's army. I'm not hating on Alexander but he is overrated.
