BATTLE OF FULFORD (1066AD) - Historical Battle - Thrones of Britannia - The Battle of Fulford was fought on the outskirts of the village of Fulford[1] near York in England, on 20 September 1066, when King Harald III of Norway, also known as Harald Hardrada ("harðráði" in Old Norse, meaning "hard ruler"), and Tostig Godwinson, his English ally, fought and defeated the Northern Earls Edwin and Morcar

yea. historically apposing armies would line up face to face in shield wall, chant war hymns and hurl insults to demoralize each other and try either side to back down. realistically these men only finally engaged in battle as a last option when the intensity of emotions reached a peak that resulted in an eruption of violence . engagements lasted a few minutes and then both sides backed off and regrouped while continuing chants and insults. then repeat. thats how these battles lasted up to a whole day. short bouts of intense engagements and then regrouping. skirmishes obviously were non stop through out as archers and javelin men continuously peppered the enemy with projectiles. would have been a sight to witness.

Hardrada means hard ruler because he was quite brutal and almost tyrannical. Another fun fact: Edwin and Morcar were brothers and led rebellion after rebellion against William the Conquerer once he took England. Until they were both eventually killed.

Yes, our king Harald Hardrade was a brutal and tyrannical king. After he get king alone over Norway he get trouble with Denmark. The danes uprising against the norwegians started a long war between Norway and Denmark in 1047. Harald Hardrada was in Denmark every summer but Norway was never able to take full control over Denmark. So in 1064 king Harald Hardrade give up his war against the danes and accept the danish independance. But the war in Denmark was very hard for both Norway and Denmark with thousends of dead norwegian and danish vikings. And in 1066 Harald Hardrada invaded England. But the result was only thousends of dead norwegian warriors. And that was actually very hard for Norway with its small population. So we also call Harald Hardrada "the widowmaker". He had no respect for lifes. But i he won the battle of Fulford.

Harold Godwinson is the most underrated King in all of history, dude was a beast. Glad to see you working with Kings & Generals, they are awesome and one of my fav channels!

During Edward the confessor's reign. Harold Godwinson basically was running the country for him. He was the most respected and richest noble with lots of support. He was responsible for stopping rebellion for him too. Harold was even exiled and then invited back shortly after by Edward both reasons being because of how powerful he was.

@NSA Watchlist Bait small things that weren't implemented from earlier games, like forcing you to have general for armys or the way citys are developed in campaign. Multiplayer for the most part feels fine.

Amazing. I'm a viking reenactor and sometimes on big events we have huge battles, and it is really amazing to be like really IN the battle. Standing there in the shieldwall, the silence before the giant clash, or just the battle aftermath, when you see "dead bodies" everywhere. It is really amazing

Bro I also started my deep interest for Viking / Medieval Era by watching those two shows. (Huge fan of both). This battle and story are both sooo sick. If you want to play a game that really throws you into this world I would recommend the new Assassin's Creed game: AC Valhalla. Its quite new so there are still bugs but its a very fun Viking game.

My grandparents live in the town Stamford Bridge and I used to live at near Battle( where hastings actually happened) and all we ever did for year 7 history was the succession crisis after Edward the Confessor. Got to love English history

Around 14:30, you said “potato hat”. If I’m not mistaken, that’s a traditional Phrygian Cap, native to Eastern Europe and common among the Dacians (Getae from Rome 2). Little tidbit of info. Love the channel and content. Watch every Rome 2 siege battle I can find. Helps me get better, plus it’s just good content. Keep up the good work!

Fun fact: Harald Hardrada was the captain of the Byzantine Varangian Guard before he took the Norwegian throne. And the Norse army at Fulford included Harold Godwinson's brother Tostig, who joined Harald Hardrada in a bid for the English throne.

Yes: all three men had claimed the throne of England thus the war. As far as I know they all produced different statements and claims from different periods in which they said the throne of England was promised to themselves. Also pixie, you were saying his name correctly However Hardrada roughly translates to stern ruler not tough soldier I if you'll allow me to say, believe that the reason Hardrada believed he would win so easily is becuase he was, by all accounts a war veteran due to the fact that before becoming the king of Norway he was a mercenary for both the Byzantium empire and the Kievan Rus. *History lessons from 6 years ago coming in clutch*

Wasn’t Hardrada actually supporting the brother of Herold? I think that’s why they thought the army was reinforcing allies as they landed near Northumbria where Herolds brother had his power base.

fun fact, in the book norman conquest it talks about how Harold Godwinson potentially didn't die from an arrow to the eye, and that he actually tried to flee the battlefield and was pursued by William the Bastard and his retinue and was killed, mutilated, and cut to pieces, but this was covered up because it would be considered non-chivalric for William and his knights

“Hadrada” in the Old Norse meant “Hard Raider”. Hadrada DID want to control England, he was invited by Tostig Godwinson (Brother to Harold) to invade and take control.

Hadrada was caught by surprise by Godwinson, making a 185 mile journey in 5 days, very quick for an army of that time
