I feel like G&L is almost always a better VALUE for the same dollar. A lot of Fender is branding at this point. Of courses they still make great instruments, but I love my G&L L1000 to death and it was far more reasonable than the top of the line Fender equivalent P-Bass

I like them when they're done right. Yamaha for example, does an incredible job with their BB lineup. But a lot of PJ basses just pair an overbearing P pickup with a weak J and it effectively becomes a P bass with an extra knob

I own both of these basses and a CV 70’s Jazz Bass V I purchased this year. I love them all but I have to give it up to G&L JB and it’s my workhorse of the 3. I usually take a 4 and a 5 string J bass on the road and all of them are absolutely gig worthy out of the box. You can’t go wrong with any of these basses and I highly recommend them both.

While the Squire Jazz is a pretty good bass, the G&L has enough upgrades with the block inlays, the upgraded bridge and the high output pickups to more than make it worth the price difference. To me the Squire is a great modding platform for those who want to change things and make it their own. The G&L seems more like it is better from the get go to the point that you would not have to upgrade things. There seems to be a similar thing going on with the P style basses but without the inlay upgrades. Having said that, the 6 bolt system on the neck makes the G&L pretty tour ready - you know the neck is going to break before those bolts ever get ripped out.

Lee, the G&L has almost an active PUPS sound. Don't have both types in my area. Maybe a comparo with the 70s Squire for modern differences? Bit of a stretch, but would be nice to hear this somehow. Cheers. Love the segments. Look fwd to it everyday.

I always wondered why Leo did not design amps with G&L. I know he had to sign a 10 years non-compete contract when he sold Fender to CBS in 1965 and that is why he stayed in the background when Musicman started building amps but after 1975 he was free to do whatever he wanted. By the way... he sold Fender for $13 million which is the equivalent of $107.5 million today.

Only tone off with a P Bass? Surely, you jest! My '77 fretless maple blank plank P Bass just recoiled in horror at the thought that it's a one-trick pony. For you P Bass players out there who think a P only does tone rolled off, explore the full tonal palette. Play behind the pickup. Play in front of it. Stick foam under the strings at the bridge. Take it out. On a fretless, explore fretting with the pads of your fingers and then compare with the fingertips proper. There are a zillion tones to be had in that OG.

To the point of the CV sounding more classic, on my old SB-2 (arguably slightly different pickups from the LB) you could pretty well nail down classic P by rolling the volume down to about 75%. No one ever gives the volume respect as a tonal device...

I got an Epiphone Thunderbird in the same price range when I jumped into bass from guitar. If you like that style, they're worth checking out, too. The one I got has been a phenomenal bass for me, and the one issue I ever had with it, I called Epiphone, and they emailed me an overnight prepaid shipping label, repaired it, and overnighted it back to me, so I was without it for less than 72 hours. I also have an LTD short scale 5-string that was only about $250 that's absolutely killer. The 34" scale might be an easier transition from guitar. That bass has a P-Bass style pickup.
@rolux4853
@rolux4853 4 года назад
If you want classic bass tone do not get an Thunderbird or something with such type of pickups! Stick with the classic Jazz and Precision Basses! The squier classic vibe series is great, there is nothing to complain about them. I would prefer them over a Mexican fender any day, just because of the value to money ratio. If you just want to try out Bass without paying to much you could also look into Harley Benton if your in Europe. They are extremely cheap and work great. I don’t get what the dude above me means with the 34“ scale, because that’s the traditional electric bass scale. I think he means something shorter than 34“ which would be considered shortscale. In my opinion shortscale isn’t easier to play than 34“, it’s just different. So I strongly advice against any other than the traditional Fender Style basses, if you’re not into some kind of extreme music.

Put that Squire JB or P-Bass through an Ampeg amp with decent speakers and they will display some character that is lacking here. These little practice amps especially for bass just don't cut it for me because the bottom end is so feeble. Nice playing as always Nathan.

I can't believe I guy that has spent his life at a guitar store actually thinks that the weight of the two basses might be down to some of the components rather than considering the very real possibility that it just simply the variance in the wood that was used *that* day (that they were manufactured). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bbTpkhG0GDc.html This is the nicest sounding PJ I've ever heard. Note the J pickup is located further from the bridge and closer to the P than on most basses with this PJ configuration. Scott owns a lot of boutique high end basses but I'm so envious of how great this one sounds. So good!

Anyone has thoughts between a Squier classic vibes 50s Stratocaster vs a G&L legacy tribute?
@johnong2655
@johnong2655 4 года назад
The real question. Plus, can anyone explain the reason why G&L? Don't tell me just because it's made in US, coz the low end models are made in Indonesia

@@johnong2655 that's what I'm looking for. Can someone expand on this subject? Both are around the same price and made in Asia, but G&L seems to have better quality

There is just no reason to buy expensive passive basses anymore. I have a posh american vintage P bass that was almost 2 grand new. I also have a classic vibe p bass that was about 350 quid. With the same strings, i literally cannot tell the two apart in sound. The squier is easier to play.

Wait, that bridge on the classic vibe ain't right, I got the filled one!

What do you mean 'filled' ones? The SQ CV60s range of Js and Ps have threaded saddles on them.They are vintage accurate saddles used on original 60s era basses while the CV70s doesnt.

I have a 1995 USA Legacy (Strat) and it sounds better than any Fender Strat I've ever played since the mid 80s. So there's that...
