@AWtify
@AWtify 3 года назад
@@vontai4553 Given that most uneducated Westerners believe that it is always winter in Russia, it is strange that they always invade Russia in summer uniforms. There can only be one explanation: the Western general staffs are more aware of the geography and expected to occupy Russia during the summer months. If this did not work, then there is only one explanation: the heroic resistance of the Russians and the heavy losses of the occupiers.
@MagiconIce
@MagiconIce 3 года назад
Yeah, but the Russians were (and still are) used to it. Russia has in Winter a way harsher climate (just like most of Eastern Europe) than Central Europe. So they knew, if not exactly by date by season, what's going to come.
@MagiconIce
@MagiconIce 3 года назад
@@AWtify Allegedly, Hitler said, that wars are not decided by the weathers, when he ignored the warnings of his generals before Barbarossa, that the troops should bring their winter gear, since that would've meant extra logistical strain and would've slowed the advance into the Soviet Union. If he would've listened to his generals arguing for an early push towards Moscow, he maybe even would've been right in this case. But that is a "What if"-scenario, nothing less, maybe the Germans would've cut off Moscow and besieged it, maybe it would've entered a guerilla warfare state with Red Army Units entrenching in the metro and fighting the Germans from there. And maybe the Reserves from the East then would've committed to a counter attack in Winter freeing the capital city of the USSR and still pushing back the Germans. In the real history, that took place, Hitler slowed it down and so Weather became the deciding factor. And imho the General Staff could've known this and Hitler too, since Napoleon, relatively spoken, fared worse about 130 years earlier, due to similar tactics the Russians employed back then, scorched Earth, retreat into the wide land, let the Enemy overextend and then strike back hard in Winter.

@@cs03gsboom69 That is a moot point because its totally historic hindsight. In late 1941 the Leningrad siege was brand new so there was no way for anybody to know that would last until Jan 1944. That would be for the German perspective, there was no way to have known. If you are speaking from a Russian perspective and how they would defend Moscow compared with the Leningrad siege or even battle of Stalingrad, well I think we know the answer. Just one thing I would like to point out, it's not that submission was never in Stalin's vocabulary, during the initial phase of Operation Barbarossa, loads of Ukrainians welcomed germans as they were fed up with Stalin. Germans rewarded them by mass killings of Ukrainians and other Slavs that were captured. Once the Soviets realized this, they choose to fight until the last man, if every last man had died, then every last woman would have picked up the gun. When you realize that the occupying force is not interested in winning the war, but trying to exterminate you and your people, the human zeal to survive kicks in and will make you fight till your last breath.

Before the Battle of Moscow. Stalin talked to his spy chief in Tokyo and asked him what were Japan's interest. His spy told Stalin that Japan's eyes are not looking to attack the Soviet Union. Japan's interest was else where. So Stalin had 44 divisions of the Siberian Army shipped to Moscow for the upcoming battle. The Siberian Army was waiting for a Japanese attack and join Germany in the war. Two day after the Soviets launched their counter attack against the Germans at Moscow. Japan attacked the Americans at Pearl Harbor. In two days time. The World War took a shocking turn.

Siberia and Russian Far East were too inhospitable and underdeveloped for Japan to fight for. Also - several years before there were battles of Lake Khasan and later of Nomonhan/Khalkin Gol between Soviet and Japanese forces. They proved that Soviet army would be a very tough opponent for Japan to make easy successes. Just imagine trying to advance thousands and thousands miles of Siberian forest along a single railroad artery, to gain nothing of strategic importance. That was ridiculous even for Imperial Japanese. So it was not a surprise that Japan turned to developed, easy to access by sea and rich in oil and other resources areas of West Asia/Pacific.

I just wanted to say (since the video was a ambiguous and seemed to imply that it was) that Hitler’s decision to secure the flanks isn’t considered a bad decision. It’s a common trope to say Hitler constantly disregards his generals to make stupid decisions, but it’s not really that simple. Both he and his generals made mistakes. Bread and coal, in the Ukraine and Caucuses, were critical to Germany and it was strategically vital for Hitler to gain access to them. Not to mention that if the Germans had advanced straight to Moscow they would have faced a stronger enemy in an even more vulnerable position than they did in reality.

The whole oblyast was heavily fought over and the town i originally came from, Ludinovo is known to change sides about 3 times by the middle of the 1942 with bitter fighting especially around the marshes and riverside of the city with many heroes (albeit some more local than anything else). For the sake of accuracy, the "Rasputsitsia" or "General Cold" have equally affected both sides tactics wise. It is just Russian knew a bit better how to survive in these conditions. Nevertheless, the actual fighting was impeded for both sides. Even the argument about Wehrmacht being ill-equipped for fighting in cold weather conditions (aircraft fuel freezing just at -18C, weapons lubricant were not suitable for cold weather) leaving the lack of winter equipment are easily matched by the physical lack of military hardware Soviets were suffering from due to loss of the manufacturing base/factories being in the middle of relocation. Let's not forget the land lease convoys just started to arrive. It is actually a very interesting topic in terms of what was the most crucial thing supplied - which would probably be perhexiline gunpowder

Yes and NO. Yes, the Soviets got the same amount of winter, cold and misery as the Germans, but..... 1. The Soviets had better suited uniforms and fighting gear suited for the weather conditions.(Tested and proven by Battlefield Detectives). 2. The Soviets were more mechanized than the Germans and did not have to rely on horse drawn wagons or bother to feed or care for the thereto required horses. 3. The Soviet military verhicles were FAR better suited for (basically non-existing) infrastructure. 4. Soviet fuel was better formulated to deal with winer conditions that would turn German Diesel fuel into useless butter. 5. Soviet lubricants for weapons were either better suited to conditions (or non-existent, which is fine as well for a while.). German weapons froze and stalled on the used grease and cold solidified oils. 5. The Soviets were used to the local conditions and were better preconditioned for generic deprivation and maltreatment. In short, They were tougher, meaner and like honey-badgers. 6. The Germans collectively suffered from moerate to severe withdrawal sysmptoms because they had run out of meth ("Panzerschokolade" Pervitin) that had kept them 'hopping high' ever since 1939. The half part of how the Soviet forced won is because Stalin called in troops from Siberia, which were highly more trained and better in winter if you compare it to German and Soviet troops.
@jamesricker3997

German troops were not exactly equipped for the winter. Their logistics sucked and the lubricant they use on their engines and guns froze solid in below zero temperatures
@PewPewPlasmagun

Actually Moscow was in the end defended by the ENTIRE NATION, defenders came from everywhere. Siberians were not the greatest part.
@aubuchonproductions4090
@aubuchonproductions4090 3 года назад
PewPewPlasmagun if you take a look into documentaries, Siberian troops were more trained in winter and could deal with the Germans since they had no proper training or equipment to deal in the snow, and by entire nation I hope you just mean the western part of the country becuase the eastern side were more scared and focused on a Japanese invasion. And just didn’t care.

It's actually a common myth. The "Siberian" divisions were only a small part of the troops defending Moscow. For example, on the Tula direction there were not a single Siberian formation. Not to mention a "Siberian" division is not necessarily formed of Siberians, there were folks from all around the Soviet Union.

Notice. There wasn't any American support at this time. Land lease started only in 1942. SO Russians won on their own. And I don't agree on "fighting for your homeland" advantage. All European countries fought for their homeland and they all lost.

well hitler never really want to capture moscow for him yes is a politically victory but his main objectif is taking the ukrain for grain and fertile land AND the oil field on the Caucasus so the germany economy can keep up with this attritional war . And the german did replace their lose's and more they grow up in number till 1943.

Securing the East is one thing. Defeating the soviets was in itself an objective as they were the real threat to Europeans.

They replaced them. But not fast enough to keep up with the conscription of the red army. And because of the huge distance between germany and moscow the replacement and replenishment was a big logistical task. The german losses on the frontline weren't replacable. Especially because many of those soldiers were professionals and very battle-hardened. The new conscripts hadn't the same quality.
@cccpredarmy
@cccpredarmy 4 года назад
Of course. The main logistical knot of the Soviet Union with all its high tier industries and production is a completely useless area to capture. If only Hitler would be as dumb as you the war could have ended the same year it started... in BERLIN.
