Portuguese first reached Japan in 1543, at Tanegashima. One of the commanders of the armada offered one local lord his own _arcabuz_ as a gift; later on, as the Japanese reproduced the weapon, it became known as the _Tanegashima Weapon_ - or simply a _Tanegashima_ . I remember during the 1990's a comemorative _Escudo_ coin was issued, to celebrate the arrival at Tanegashima.

@Dfathurr 2 года назад
Well, considering that early guns were sh*t at reloading, some of it consider that thing possible. Something that both Takeda clan and Mamluk Sultanate might think
@kaltaron1284
@kaltaron1284 2 года назад
Apparently visibility wasn't very good because it was raining and the Takeda had approached through foresty terrain but emerged pretty close to the Oda/Tokugawa lines and thought they could break them again like in a previous battle but Oda had learned new tricks and built palisades. So yeah, serious error of judgement. It's also worth noting that Katsuyori wasn't very experienced in both statesmanship and leading armies. He was the 4th son but the 1st one and intended heir had been involved in a lot against his father and let's just say Shingen wasn't a very forgiving person. Also unfortunately for the Takeda, they had lost quite a few important leaders like Shingens brother at the 4th battle of Kawanakajima against the Uesugi. In essence the clan was bled out by the constant conflict with the Uesugi and going on the offensive was a foolish and vainglory thing to do. Edit: Just checked something because it was nagging me in the back of my brain. Katsuyori was only acting leader of the Takeda, rulership was supposed to go to his son when he came of age. So he probably felt he had to prove something before that time.
@kaltaron1284
@kaltaron1284 2 года назад
@@Dfathurr The Takeda did not only think it possible, they had done it several times before at Mikatagahara. Well minus the fortifications and with superior numbers. And the Oda had far more experience in the use of firearms by the time of Nagashino. So the Takeda were making dsecisions based on past experience without realizing how much things had changed. Also rain was though to make gun powder weapons useless (and does in Shogun 2 IIRC, so maybe Katsuyori had played too much that) but the Oda had learned how to keep the gun powder dry and usable.

Oda Nobunaga was sometimes surprisingly tricky in battle, but Toyotomi Hideyoshi basically brought his enemies to their knees with ease. This is partly because Nobunaga had laid the foundation for the unification of Japan, but hideyoshi was probably a true war genius. That's why his dementia in his later years was such a waste.

There's no proof Yasuke was given a title of samurai. It would be a beautiful story, but if it came true, it would be noticed somewhere in documents from that times. The myth of a "black samurai" came from the book by Lockley & Girard - which is very good overall, but in this case it just got too romanticized.

A few things I'd like to add: AFAIK the ODa also utilized mobile wooden palisades. Probably not very strong but in essence the Takeda attempted a frontal cavalry charge against a gun line supported by spearmen (the Oda were also famous for their Yari Ashigaru) and over difficult terrain. Yeah... Like many other Daimyou the Takeda were a branch of the Minamoto and therefore also nobility. The family in Kai that perished in the Sengoku Jidai was the main branch but others did survive. For example a Takeda branch held the only Japanese castle on Hokkaidou in Matsumae. Another eastern branch in Aizu tought various martial arts among them Daitou-ryū Aiki-juujutsu.Takeda Soukaku was the teacher of *amonst others) Ueshiba Morihei who developed Akidou. Whether Yasuke was ever made a samurai is AFAIK unclear. There is no historical evidence for either side. Normally there are various records from samurai esp. if they were in any kind special but we have nothing indicating that he was ever more than a bodyguard. Which admittedly was pretty outragious already.

Akechi's betrayal wasn't random from what I know, He was so close to Nobunaga, he saw him as a big brother and told him Stuff he would never discuss with any of his generals or relatives,Akechi felt the same way However he was a traditionalist and close to the emperor too ( I could go into details about that but that'll take too long), Nobunaga's mistake was that he told Akechi about his plan of canceling the emperor and abolishing the shogun emperor system and instead have one ruler all over japan that was him which created a moral conflict for Akechi and took him a while to set his mind up, either betray his "younger brother" and save their traditional ways or let it be and you guys can figure the answer now x)) PS : Don't take this word by word as I'm no professional historian, I'm just into Japanese history

Nobunaga had plans of modernizing Japan and forming stronger ties with the west. Opening the borders to trade. My guess is that Japan would've westernized earlier instead of isolating themselves and begun to conquer more islands across the region. They may even manage to hold on to Korea, though I think this is still fairly unlikely. Christianity would've most likely been bigger in Japan in this timeline than it is in ours, though I don't know to what extent. I also believe it's possible that Nobunaga might've tried to overthrow the emperor, since he couldn't become Shogun and clearly didn't want to have a bafuku holding more authority tham him. Since he can't become emperor either for obvious reasons, the only way for him to legitimize absolute power in Japan would be to take down the emperor and instate a new order. But it's impossible to know for sure. Butterfly effect and all.

@@akmr.mafiax6363 The fall of the Tokugawa shogunate was a bit more complicated than that, and the emperor throwing his support to the other side certainly wasn't the deciding factor. What proves this is the fact that even with the meiji restoration, the same centuries old samurai families stayed in power, the difference being that instead of reamaining feudal clans, they became industrial conglomerates, the famed zaibatsu companies. All the while the emperor remained a figurehead.

Some people say that unification of Japan is like making mochi. Oda bought the ingredients and mixed it, Hideyoshi kneaded the ingredients and cooked it, while Tokugawa sat and ate it. It's crazy to think what could've happened if Nobunaga survived and how different Japan would be under his rule instead of Hideyoshi/Tokugawa. Isolation period may not happened due to Nobunaga's penchant towards nanban and foreign culture.
@LagunaShirogane

Very true and unlike his best friend Tokugawa, Nobunaga was very open minded with Christianity. Some even thought he converted if I am correct. Tokugawa treated Christianity as a threat. A plague upon Japan which partly led to Japan's isolationist policies that wasn't uplifted until the Meiji Restoration in the 1800s which that same event led to the abolition of the Samurai caste. This event was featured in the movie "The Last Samurai" that starred Tom Cruise and considered based on a true story.

@@lerneanlion Probably, considering the fact that he is pretty ambitious. The closest target after taking all of Japan would be Joseon afterall. I dunno tho, he might consolidate first before moving on. Now that I think about it, Hideyoshi had a different reason for the invasion, didn't he?
@lerneanlion
@lerneanlion 2 года назад
@@amp8295 I think so? He simply had no idea what to do with the massive army that he had at the moment and most likely do not wanted the military to begin to harass his own citizens anytime soon. So he came with the propaganda of "invading Joseon to get to the Ming dynasty" in the end. And even although Nobunaga did launch an invasion against Joseon, he will still have to deal with the combined forces of Joseon and the Ming dynasty in the end like in our timeline. But what did change is the whole isolationist period is most likely not going to happen anytime soon since he is a fan of the European culture and even employed someone from Africa as one of his samurais.
@donkeytwoddle
@donkeytwoddle 2 года назад
Nobunaga could have been at the head of a unified Japan, with modernised effective military for the time & trusted connections from across the globe that could have spread the innovations from the European age of discovery, enlightenment & then industrialisation. His generals used his inherited his strategies and were increasingly already doing most of the fighting by the time of his death, so it is unlikely he wouldn't have unified japan in a similar way. His love of fire-arms & open-ness to foreign culture could be the big change. ______________________ Tokugawa Ieyasu who took the rains from Toyotomi Hideyoshi moulded the new japan, he was the guy who introduced the isolationist policy & chased the jesuits out of japan; he essentially was a cultural conservative. Ieyasu set up the Tokugawa Dynasty and strict social order that was centred around stability (starting the edo period) ; population was held stable & due to the country enjoying its first long-peace economic growth steadily increased. The Tokugawa Dynasty ruled until the Meji Restoration period. Some people see the Edo period as a golden period for japan, while others see it as the period of conservative internalisation policy where Japan was left behind from arrogant decisions to isolate. Loosing a position to have been the supremely modern force in the region during the next period. Japan didn't need to miss the Industrial revolution if Nobunaga survived, but who knows it still might have.

So for comparison between Japan and China during this era: 1. In China, the government was very centralized and owned key industries while in Japan, the government was destabilized by feudalism. 2. Anyone in China could raise himself to another higher social status through merit, connections, and recommendations while in Japan a person was restricted to the social status of his/her caste. 3. China was rich in natural resources and trade oriented while Japan was poor in resources and had many restrictions on trade. 4. In China, all subjects actually paid their taxes while in Japan many aristocrats ignored paying their due. 5. China was able to prevent warlords from existing by having a national conscription from the general population while in Japan, military defense mainly came from Samurai who were more loyal to their lords than their country. 6. China was an actual functional empire while Japan was a nominal empire composed of semi-autonomous states.

I always wonder, what if Oda Nobunaga was never betrayed like Aurelian was when they were halfway through reunifying their land? It's most obvious that Japan would've been more open and an invasion of Korea is always a possibility but, would they have conquered it? Would they stand equally with the Chinese empire or invade them? Will he take the mantle of Emperor and trash the title of Shogun? Or is Oda Nobunaga's rule just doomed due to the fact that he has made so many enemies and an open rebellion will immediately sprout throughout?

In those days, Buddhists, like Enryakuji Temple on Mt. Hiei, had great political power based on their religious background and were as strong or stronger than other warlords. They were as powerful as or more powerful than other warlords in the warring states. They also hindered the unification of the country by staging revolts in various regions to oppose the daimyo, as in the case of the Jodo Shin sect. In response to the Buddhist forces that tried to intervene in the administration of the country based on "the principles of Shintoism and Buddhism," Oda thoroughly attacked and destroyed them and brought them to their knees. He managed to defeat the Buddhists by burning down an entire mountain of temples and shrines and killing all the monks and other fleeing men and women, at great cost to his allies, including the loss of his younger brother. This was an outrageous act even according to the values of the time, but in a world of disorder and warfare, He achieved it by force. Oda Nobunaga must have been a very unconventional man.
