After a much harder landing than anyone expected, in the days that followed, the Marines on Peleliu encountered heavy Japanese resistance that reduced their advance to a crawl. The painfully slow and deadly progress would continue over the next few days, and soon it would become the main characteristic of the battle of Peleliu. Even after the Marine advance stalled in front of a formidable Japanese defensive line set on Umurbrogol Mountains, soon named Bloody Nose Ridge by the Marines, and despite the heavy losses suffered, General William Rupertus, the 1st Marine Division commander, still urged his Marines to continue the advance and maintain the momentum.

There is only one left out in this documentary, and that is the contributions of the Montford Point Marines. The most, volunteering and very brave, unsung Marines on Peleliu. Semper Fi mac.

Interesting, A small contingent of Japanese survived the end of the battle and, unknown to the Americans lived there in the caves in the hills. Surrendering, In March, 1947!

Thanks for the deep dive into planning and logistics! I’ve read “With the Old Breed” which is excellent in explaining the personal hell of a Marine. This gives me a good sense of the battle in whole and how difficult command must have been.

I truly hope whomever put the water in the fuel barrels was made to drink it. It's pretty hot here in Texas now and in recent months those poor Marines have crossed my mind when I'm out working in it and drink water.

Another Great covering of a Pacific island battle! Maybe a hint at which battle next? We staying with Central Pacific front or will we see a shift to the Solomons/ PNG landings? 🙂

@@FromtheBattlefields Ahh of course! I'll be waiting! Could i also ask if you'd cover lesser know but interesting Naval landing operations such as the Canton operation by Japan against china to capture multiple chinese ports in the south? :)

I vote PNG… although, I must confess, there is a channel here on RU-vid called HypoHystericalHistory who has EXCELLENT content on PNG. It can’t be beat in my opinion. However, he does cover mostly the Australian side of things, which is fair. He’s Australian and ANZACS did most of the heavy lifting. I would like to hear a little more about McArthurs brilliance in planning and yet possess a complete lack of actual battlefield understanding and leadership.

Never should have invaded Peleliu. Wasn't needed. Read "With the old Guard" EB Sledge's book

Yeah, Sledge should have written his book before the battle, showed it to his commanding officers, and they would have then seen the mistake they were about to make, called off the landing, and sent the Marines home for the rest of the war. Armchair military planning is as worthless as Monday morning quarterbacking. To say the battle was unnecessary is a slap in the face to the Marines who died so you could make your thoughtless comment. Semper Fi, do or die.

Your wrong the Japanese planned to bring in over 500 planes and use them to attack our fleet at Philippines and the landing troops. That's 500 kamikaze. Estimates say we would have lost close to 8000-10000 sailors and soldiers
