Today I take a look at the $74 iFix It Pro Tool Kit and compare it to the $37 Harbor Freight Quinn Professional Electronics Repair Kit. Is the @harborfreight savings worth it? Or should you go with the @iFixitYourself ??
Special thanks to @Mac84 !!

Thanks for the awesome review! We (obviously) love the iFixit Pro Tech Toolkit, but our goal is for everyone to fix every thing. That's why we'll never have and will never lock down any of our repair content with a paywall. So if that means you can only afford a different toolkit, that's okay! Just keep repairing your stuff! 👍

I don't trust myself with an ifixit toolkit because I know I'll lose like 80% of the bits within a week, but I 100% love everything you do

I fixed the lost bit problem. Fear. I borrow my daughter’s ifixit kit. If I were ever to lose something, she would kill me.

Great video! I appreciate it the in-depth review. I’m happy to see both kits have the same bits. It’s certainly a great option to run out and grab at the store in a pinch too if you discover you need a special bit to open up a MacBook. And thanks for the cameo! ❤

I had several precision kits from Walmart and harbor freight. (Not the Quinn shown here.) What sold me on getting ifixit's toolkit was the torx bit that came "free" with a pixel 4 battery repair kit. The knockoff bits were all loose in the head of the screw but the ifixit bit fit perfectly. It was that moment that I realized a screwdriver wasn't just a screwdriver.

I think I’m going to pick up one of these Quinn kits for the basement, as I am super bad about losing bits during livestreams. I will feel only half as bad doing that to a Quinn kit. That and I can afford to get a set to keep in my office.

Good comparison. A bit of double sided tape would solve the bit holder. As a second set? I’d get the HF set.

An excellent video. Very fair assessment of the tools and perhaps this healthy competition will help make these tools more accessible.

Great review. I'm glad one of the first things you point out is supporting what iFixit does beyond the tools, as they're a huge part of not only helping the world repair devices themselves, but making the manufacturers pay attention to repairability in their designs. This is a good example of a pro kit vs. a very-decent kit. I'd note that the Quinn kit, like many of the HF hand tools, comes with a lifetime warranty, which means (at least hypothetically) you can get a replacement for anything that breaks or wears out. I'd guess HF gets some benefit from their size and buying power as part of the difference in cost too. Given the absolute dollars we're talking about, it's hard not to want to support iFixit. I'd get the Quinn if I'm not using iFixit's videos, etc. and just need a kit for once-in-a-while use. It's nice to have a Quinn option though.

I will always do my best to support the iFix It cause, we get many intangible benefits from them. But the Quinn is a great value. I plan on revisiting these two kits in a few months to see how the Quinn holds up.

I like the ifixit driver. I found mine in the trash. Didnt want to pay for the official bits so I got the harbor freight kit. I have no way to compare but the harbor freight bits feel soft and damage easily. I still have my favorite random #1 philips screwdriver from China that still beats anything I've ever used.

I have yet to damage one of the HF ones 🤞 but with something really stick I could. I plan on doing a follow up on this in a few months.

@@RetroTechorDie the smaller flathead HF bits tend to twist and break at the corners. The Phillips bits tend to round on the edges. Everything else has been fine. I only have the 28 bit mini kit though.

I love this review and am currently researching the HF kit for a review compaired to the iFixit ones I have. One thing I feel like got glossed over when going over price comparision was "It is nice that it is cheaper because I can lose bits and just buy a new one" The iFixit warranty is pretty extensive and easy to use, and in researching while the HF one says "Lifetime Warranty" on the box that warranty only seems to cover manufacturing defects instead of wear and use.

even thought the harbor freight is cheaper for me. outside the us, it's almost the same price with shipping import fee so i'm gonna keep leaning toward ifixit , great video.

iFixit offers free replacement of any tools that break. If you have used tools professionally, there is a certain feel to tools that are properly designed and iFixit have that quality feel. That said, the Harbor Freight kit will do the job if you only need to use it a few times rather than every day.
@Just1n2802
@Just1n2802 13 дней назад
Quinn one also has a lifetime warranty so you can bring it into any of HF's brick and mortar stores to get it replaced
@Just1n2802
@Just1n2802 13 дней назад
It's also worth noting that while I agree the ifixit feels more premium which is why I just bought one myself, I recommended the quinn to my brother who was just starting in tech and needed something fast, and he uses it every day repairing school chromebooks and hasn't had any major issues
@RikiHorizon
@RikiHorizon 8 месяцев назад
This is pretty odd. Because ifixit does rebrand a Chinese kit for at least the driver kit, if I'm not mistaken. That's not a knock at its quality, I love mine. But it seems as though hf could just brand the same kit for less? Nice video regardless!
@RetroTechorDie
@RetroTechorDie 8 месяцев назад
Product sourcing and rebranding is a whole rabbit hole for many companies.
@themessygarage
@themessygarage 8 месяцев назад
Probably there are some basic terms of 'exclusivity' for iFixit that prevent their supplier(s) from selling the identical kit to someone else. Yeah, the differences are a bit nuanced, but likely meet the letter of the agreement, if possibly not the spirit.
