Tools you NEED to get into electronics (and QuadHands giveaway!) 

This is really cool, it's amazing how such a large community have gathered around so few videos, but the quality really shows and you couldn't be more deserving. Well done.

This is a question I get asked a lot so I thought I would answer it. :) Here are the tools and accessories I would recommend for anyone wanting to get into electronics!

I got the solder sucker first, thinking it would be a permanent tool where the braid would “run out” I immediately regretted that decision and almost exclusively use the copper braiding to desolder things when I mess up

Pretty cool video. I wish I would have seen it when I first started soldering. Would have saved a lot of time. Especially the solder wick. Just wish people had it local ants I didn't have to order it.

I always figured I was "ok" at soldering, but not very good. Never could do anything fancy, and couldn't get to small areas easily. Until I bought a proper Hakko set - in my case the FX-888D. Suddenly I found out that I could solder, and solder pretty well, considering. Hands still shake, and I still need to learn the value of proper heat application and tip selection, but overall, the amount that a decent soldering iron will improve your soldering skills cannot be overstated.

It's pretty handy to have a variable DC power supply. I just bought one today actually

Wermy, you inspired me to tap into my childhood with your GBZ videos. I'm almost done with an ABXY LR game boy color zero that I'll post on the Sudomod forums once I'm finished. It isn't perfect, but it would've been a lot worse without your videos helping me along the way. So thanks!

I'm looking over at my setup now. A good mini screwdriver set is great, buying a set with 5 or 6 bits will get you nowhere and you'll end up stripping out a lot of screws and you'll end up frustrated with your projects. Item #97517 from Harbor Freight is an amazing low cost kit, I strongly recommend it. Also, you got me hooked on silicone wire. I don't bother wiring a small project unless I'm using silicone wire now, big game changer for me. Dremels are nice (WEN) but an inexpensive set of files will suffice for plastic

I pretty much hate desoldering. I had a plastic solder pump before that didn't do anything at all besides cooling the joint and whacking the board with too much recoil. I found an old ZD-190 and not only was it an improvement, i decided to mod it further. Thing is, i can't reach the top with my thumb! My hands are too small. So i just sawed off the sheath and 3D printed myself a new round button. So i don't have to reset it with my thumb, i can simply whack my thigh. Next thing i want to try is something like ZD-211 desoldering iron, though i hear they aren't all that well made. I also received Bismuth solder from China recently - seems to help with desoldering through hole connections and mounting tabs.

I know you wanna focus on tools and hardware but I would really like seeing a video tutorial of everything that kan be improved on the software part of the GBZ project, like how to change resolution and aspect ratio, how to overclock the pi correctly for each of the systems, how to change the scale of the letters in the main menu, hide unnecesary messages and so on... it would be awsome. Thanks for getting me into electronics, its a new hobby that gives me a tone of funn :D

I just start motivated like to learn repair electronic and repair ipad n laptop… that’s what I start like to do repair and self taught myself doing repair since last 3 months now.. but don’t have tools kits.. I’m gettin start learning from basic beginning what to do with first thing with soldering station with iron heat hot air? Must be expensive equipment but worry it.., sigh. Also extremely important IMO? Hand tools. For things like pliers and cutters I would say „splurge a little to save money down the line“. You can rarely go wrong with Knipex, although they are a little on the pricey side. But they will last you for years. Had one of those Chinesium cutters for a while. It was „okay-ish“, but flimsy and at some point the rivet just got looser and looser, then one of the blades chipped and then it went in the bin. Got a Knipex Flush Cutter and have had zero regrets. Same is true for wire strippers. I used to have a reaaally cheap one that was never really good and tended to chew up some types of cables. Bit the bullet a few years ago and paid almost 40 bucks for a Jokari stripper and never looked back since. And it strips anything from 10 - 26AWG with no issues whatsoever. As for screw drivers: My recommendation is to get a set of really good ones for the everyday screw types you come across most often. Wera and Wiha are good options. For those more „exotic“ or less frequently used screw types, get one or two cheap bit sets that have all of them inside. Soldering iron: I have been using a TS80 as my „daily driver“. Awesome iron. And it is portable, you can even run it off an RC LiPo battery pack.😁 The multimeter that I use is a Uni-T61B. Cheap, accurate enough. No need to spend Fluke money (yet).

Hi wermy! New sub here. I am fascinated by your RetroPie projects. My Dad has always been into electronics and when I was a little girl he and I did some little "projects" together (I basically watched him make stuff) Unfortunately now he's got terminal cancer and I want us to do a project together for old times and memories. I really want to put together a Game Boy Zero but I have no soldering experience minus a few things he showed me when I was a little girl. I don't think he's strong enough to do more than just teach me soldering and guide me through a build so I'd need it to be very simple. Would Kite's board fit the bill? And if so, how do I get my hands on one?

You forgot about Wire Strippers! A good pair of wire strippers makes a world of difference compared to trying to get by with just scissors or pliers.

Wermy I am a Field Technician In Texas and do Breakfix for computers, I have a Fascination for Electronics and will like to learn how to Soldier to acquire this skill set and eventually work as A Component level repair fixing motherboards. I have acquire the following to start, Kotto Extractor, Kotto Solder Sucker, Silicone Soldering mat, QuadHands Deluxe helping hands, SRA Flux Pen, Tip Tinner from Thermaltronics, No clean Wick, Rosin Core Solder SN 63 pb37 0.8mm, HAkko FX-888D . Which Fluke Multimeter do you Recommend or other items i might need? I was checking out the Fluke 101, 107 and even 117 but have no idea. Sincerely Irvin Thanks
