my grandfather joined the marines at age 16.. he lied to join as he lost 3 older brothers during d-day.. since he was native american.. there was no birth certificate .. he earned dress blues.. won boxing events.. got 3 purple hearts.. worked as a mechanic on the landers.. told me and no one else in my family he got his first purple heart on tarawa after the lander suffered a direct hit killing everone but him and two other mates.. the two other guys seen he was alive but knocked out due to the impact of the mortor shell that hit the lander dragged him to shore.. once upon shore they all decided to split up.. he never saw those men again and somehow survived the initial invasion..god speed to those men who saved my native american grand father.. without you i wouldn't be here.. also on my grandfathers death bed. i asked the marines to pay him a visit.. marines showed up in full dress.. a navy and army guys who were in the hospice with my grandfather complained no one gave them the respect that the marines gave my grandfather.. that was so awesome for my grandfather cuz he knew the marines take care of each other. no one left behind!!

Marine Combat Artist Harry Jackson suffered a head wound on Betio. He survived the war but had flashbacks and fits of rage for the remainder of his life. It certainly affected his later works at his studios in Cody WY and Italy. He was a family friend as he had migrated from Chicago at a young age to cowboy in NW Wyoming on the Pitchfork Ranch, where my granddad was Cow Foreman and where my Mother was born. He was quite a character having several wives including Tina Lear of Lear Jet fame. Semper Fi, Harry.

My grandfather's brother landed on red1 or red2. He was a flame thrower and after seeing his co get cut in half by gunfire he dumped his tanks in a bunker and then got shot in the head. When he woke up all his gear was taken because he was presumed dead and had to crawl back to the beach with the help of another marine.

My father landed on Red 2 in the third wave. He said his Gator (tracked vehicle) was put out of action at the edge of the reef by Japanese machine gun fire. He had to wade to shore, many times pushing dead Marines in front of him to stop machine gun bullets. He said the machine gun fire was coming from everywhere, the pier, the beach, and the point. He served on Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Siapan, and Tinian and it was obvious that Tarawa affected him the most.

There were almost 5,000 on the island many were not Japanese soldiers but conscripted laborers. There are several informative books written about this battle including information on the other Medal of Honor recipients of which there were 4. The "pocket" was a set of 3 bunkers at the border of red 1 and red 2 that remained until nearly the end of the battle. I'm just curious if you created this video or it's one from the past you uploaded.

No wonder this chapter of Medal of Honor Pacific assault (PC game) was so brutal and hard to complete. Game throws you into shoes of private Tommy Conlin landing with his trusty squad on Red 2,first clearing pier and not mentioned beached cargo ship near it,then over the airfield towards the bunkers and gun installations.

I still don't know why isolated Islands like this were not sorrounded and left over to be bombed or until they starved to death, the only reason I see is that the generals and or the president wanted the war to end soon. So lives were expendable in exchange for a faster end to the war.
@mikeyoung9810
@mikeyoung9810 2 года назад
The narrator explained why they had to take Tarawa. You couldn't leave a base with a runway on the flank when started this island hopping campaign. They did leave many occupied islands alone later on which was done to save lives. It wasn't about ending the war faster but winning the war which was heavily in doubt at the time.
@gabrielmayorga1920
@gabrielmayorga1920 2 года назад
@@mikeyoung9810 they could have cut off the island by blocking any ships and bombarding it. And Eventually win. But they wanted to experiment in the island hopping process. That being said, the battke was poorly planned. The Air Raids were delayed then ended much to oon.
